Josh was the NP that attended to me and he was just awesome - fantastic bedside manor! I visited on a Thursday morning, right when they opened, and was in and out in about an hour with X-rays, crutches, and a stabilizing boot! I fell down some narrow stairs around 2am while visiting from out of state and was sure I'd broken my ankle. I didn't want to go to the ER bc my California health insurance isn't accepted anywhere in Utah. I've been a nurse most of my life so I was able to determine that my situation wasn't a total emergency so I could wait until the closest urgent care center opened (but DISCLAIMER- if you're in doubt, just go to the ER ok??! Lol) After checking in, the med assistant (didn't catch her name!) came out with a wheelchair so I didn't have to walk! So helpful! She was very thorough and so helpful during my X-rays - very considerate of my pain level and positioning as well. Then I had an exam with the nurse practitioner Josh - very chill and relaxed, non-alarmist which I appreciated so much! Showed me my X-rays and gave me a CD copy. Explained everything I needed to do until I was able to get home and see my regular MD and allayed all my fears about my flight home, etc. They fitted me with some very decent crutches and a high-quality camboot which they had available onsite and showed me how to use all of it. I left feeling very confident about what to do until getting home - but I'll admit, using the crutches is definitely a learning curve for me - especially bc I'm ridiculously clumsy lol! The staff at the front desk took all my info and got me to the back for X-rays and exam super quick! They also worked hard to check and see if my Kaiser insurance would be accepted at all to help with cost. Unfortunately, Kaiser isn't accepted in Utah - but they give you significant discounts if you end up being a "private pay" client. So the price was waaaaay better than I anticipated! Especially for including all the equipment I needed. The facility is easy to get to, has tons of parking and waiting room seating, and is very clean. There's also an occupational medicine department inside. And there were lots of people coming in for employment drug screens. The name of the urgent care is CareNow and seems to be a chain in SLC - but the website is First Med Clinic - so be aware, it's the same company. Hope you never need them, but if you do, I can highly recommend this one!

The second visit occurred in his office via TEXT MESSAGE with his PA! The pain he has caused me is simply heartbreaking. After finding an actual surgeon here is what was actually wrong. 1. Clavicle (Collarbone) Fracture - Chronic, Unhealed * Type: Comminuted (broken into pieces), displaced fracture of the distal clavicle. * Status: Ununited (hasn't healed), no bridging bone (callus) formation, despite some attempted healing. * Extra bone growth: Corticated fragments and posterior/inferior bony projections. * Joint involvement: Degenerative changes and cysts at the AC (acromioclavicular) joint. 2. Rotator Cuff Injuries * Supraspinatus tendon: Torn on both front and back sides. * Subscapularis tendon: Chronic degeneration (tendinosis), full-thickness tear. 3. Labral and Cartilage Damage * Reverse osseous Bankart lesion: A bone/cartilage injury from the socket (glenoid) involving the back of the shoulder. * Labrum: Multiple tears - anterior, posterior, inferior, and superior areas. * Cartilage: Thinning and surface damage throughout, especially in the front part of the joint (anterior chondrolabral junction). * Osteoarthritis: Moderate in both the AC and glenohumeral (shoulder ball-and-socket) joints. 4. Biceps and Ligaments * Biceps tendon: Wear and degeneration where it crosses the shoulder. * Inferior glenohumeral ligament: Thickened, suggesting chronic stress, but no full-blown frozen shoulder. 5. I was so wrong. Turns out that the injury is actually a broken pelvis. Dr. Nelson's intuition and on-site imaging technology changed my entire season over about the course of 5 minutes. I'm so grateful he didn't just do the basic physical that most doctors would have done and just assigned me some strengthening exercises. He got to the heart of the issue. What impresses me most about Dr. Nelson, however, is his bedside manner. He was so kind when I burst into tears and has been patient with me when I have argued (again and again) about what exercises he'd let me do. He knows I'm extremely competitive and is good at harnessing that to help me be the "best healer" I can be and get back to racing as quickly as possible. The whole staff is super kind and courteous. It's easy to get an appointment. Although I can't quite say it's been a pleasure being their patient, they couldn't make the experience any better.

The Doctor still proceeded and gave me two steroid injections in my lower back. Shortly after being seen there. my condition became significantly worse and I ended up in the ER. I went into urinary retention, required a catheter, developed severe weakness in my legs, and eventually lost the ability to walk normally. I was ultimately hospitalized while doctors tried to determine what was happening. What has been especially difficult for me is knowing that I was trying to communicate that something felt seriously wrong with my body before everything escalated. Regardless of what ultimately caused my neurological symptoms, I wish my concerns and the combination of symptoms I was reporting had been taken more seriously and that I had been advised to seek a higher level of medical evaluation. After everything I went through--the ER, hospitalization, skilled nursing home, loss of mobility, bladder issues, and the ongoing recovery, I was honestly shocked that the clinic had the audacity to call me and still pursue my copay as though this had been an ordinary visit after what they put me through, given the circumstances, I would have expected significantly more compassion and consideration. This experience has had an enormous impact on my life, and unfortunately I would not feel comfortable returning to this clinic or recommending it to someone experiencing complex or rapidly worsening symptoms under this clinics care.
