Parking is outside or across the street. Its a public spot that can lead you to the beach! Already approaching the place you can see butterflies flying around. Its not huge but big enough to just sit and take it in and if you look closely and wait, you will see them. They are just hanging out and chilling and your able to see them usually in a cluster. The have telescope to see them closer and little fun facts about the butterflies. There are certain trails you can take to just view the place and some will take you the beach. You will encounter nature, squirrels, ducks and there was a warning about coyotes but we didn't see any during our trip. It's truly a nice place to visit and enjoy nature. Nice little walks as well.

I have been coming here since I was a child and every time you come it's just as amazing as it was the first time. These beautiful butterflies only come certain times of the year so make sure you stop by when in town or driving through. This was taken this past weekend and there wasn't a lot but just enough to experience them.

I have been coming to this butterfly grove for years. Sadly the population of the butterflies visiting this grove has declined over the years. When there are a lot of butterflies at the grove, it is an amazing site. You can only see butterflies from late October to February. It is a nice little detour for a couple of hours to see these amazing Monarch butterflies.

Visited during the first week of November, which is early in the season, so the monarch butterfly population was quite low this past weekend. There were a few small clusters hidden high up in the trees, but otherwise just a few stragglers lower to the ground, pollinating colorful flowers, making it easy to snap a few close-up photos of these beautiful creatures. The place also had a butterfly merchandise truck, and a small seating area with a docent educating the handful of visitors on site. We enjoyed walking along the trail by the lovely creek, appreciating the trees and nature while we were there. Street parking was easy to find on the main road, and a couple porta potties were available too.

Always amazing to see clusters of hundreds and hundreds of butterflies. We stopped by on November 30, and most of the butterflies had arrived by then. According to the Pismo Beach website, there are about 15,000 this year, which is down from the previous two years. There weren't very many flying around when we were there, but there are scopes and binoculars set up so you can zoom in to see the butterfly clusters in the Eucalyptus trees, and docents and park rangers available if you have questions. There are also displays about the butterflies life cycle. Note: Monarch season is late October through February.

Free entrance to the monarch butterfly groove that is dog friendly (dog must be on leash). The trail also leads you to the beach which is beautiful.

We stopped in to see the Monarch Butterflies and it was so incredible! They were a bit clustered because it was a little cold for them, but there were some flying around. Always a stop worthy event! So happy our granddaughter got to see them! Bought a Dr. Seuss Butterfly book to get more of an explanation on butterflies! stop by and see for yourself!

This is right by one of the camp/RV campgrounds in pismo beach. Not much parking at all , just on the side of the road kind of parking. We had fun even though we went during the off season of when the butterflies are there. It's not a big area, just something fun to check out when you need a break from the beach . We already have plans to come back when it's butterfly season.

We saw so many butterflies in the trees and some fluttering around. Look for the brown triangles clustered in the eucalyptus trees. We also saw a owl sitting in a tree and saw a hawk swoop down and then perch and eat a snake! Parking is tricky on the street and you may have to walk a little. The road just got re-paved so there is quite an edge, watch for that. Definitely worth a 30 minute stop good for the whole family. Signs and QR codes available all around to learn about the monarch butterflies

What a beautiful sight to see! Came by in January, during a patch of very bad weather which produced a lot of rain, cold and wind and only saw 1 or 2 monarchs. THIS month many "flutter bys" were enjoying the warmer weather and doing their annual ritual here in the grove. Watch out for ground activity- males pin down females to mate, so be careful where you step! Lots of information on plaques around the area, benches for sitting and enjoying "the show", and even porta potties. Parking is free and along the highway. Lots of people of all ages come here to observe the monarchs. If planning a road-trip specifically to enjoy this roadside attraction, allow yourself an overnight in the area and aim for temps in mid 60s - low 70s, with sunshine. The monarchs warm their lovely orange wings in the bright sunlight and clusters are observed when they open for warmth. Just gorgeous! Enjoy! Cheers! CC

Hot Grove No-frills grove of Eucalyptus trees adjacent to gorgeous Pismo Beach that serves as an overwintering site for the precious Monarch Butterflies. The Good: *Numbers are up from previous years, as the current count (Nov '22) is over 24k butterflies. *Free parking *Access to some beach trails and easy access to Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, and some Natural Preserves. *Port-o-potties on site *Informational signage The Meh: *The Grove itself is fairly small and can be seen in less than ten minutes. The Ugly: *No more daily talks by State Park volunteers/docents. I'm not sure if this is a permanent thing or temporary. TLDR: Must-stop spot if you're a nature lover and happen to be in the area between the months of October and February.

When stopping at the Pismo State Monarch Butterfly Grove, the first thing you'll notice is the scent. The beautiful eucalyptus trees, growing everywhere, fill the air with a vibrant aroma that is simply amazing. Although we didn't see a large number of butterflies at first, the sun came out, and we were delighted to see a lovely group flying!

We went in May. Zero butterflies...... and everything looked dead. They do have suggested time periods to visit.

Ask the Community - Monarch Butterfly Grove

How long to allot spending here? 1 hour enough?

Butterfly grove itself is small if just walk around it probably less than 20 mins. But there's extended trail from there...one to the beach one to the boardwalk so 1-1.5 hours total maybe?

Is the monarch butterfly grove open on major Holidays?

Yes all state parks are open on Thanksgiving

Are there butterflies now November 2021?

    Yes!

Hi I will be coming to SLO with my grand daughter this Friday are there still butterflies?

don't think so, MONARCH SEASON IS LATE OCTOBER THRU FEBRUARY. plus this year wasn't a good year even in Dec when i went the sign said estimated 182 monarchs on that day but didn't spot any

    Are there currently any butterflies?

Yes. Not a lot but you will see some butterflies there.

I'm planning a surprise trip for my friend who loves butterflies. Is November a good time to go to see them? If not November, then what month is best?

It all depends....It might be a little early for the Monarchs But you might get to see some It's an… Read more

Are there still a lot of butterflies -this year?

Not really as it is the end of the season. And this season the butterfly count was way down. You can actually check online on their website and see the current count

    Is the trail manual-wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The ground is hardpacked DG and the main trails are easily negotiated by both manual and motorized wheelchairs. Parking and unloading chairs, however, may be problematic. Be careful.

What time of the day should I visit, I will be in town this coming weekend Oct 20 to 22nd?

You want to go very early in the morning. When the sunshine hits them they start to fly. I went this weekend Oct 14 & they aren’t there yet. I hope this helps

Any butterflies this time of year? In Pismo and was thinking of checking it out if so.

Stacee, the largest numbers of Monarch butterflies can be seen in late winter, between Jan. and Mar. There are certainly a few Monarchs around now. There is a large, quieter Monarch Grove in Nipomo, about 9 miles south on Hwy. 1 from the famous… Read more

    Any butterflies today?

No monarchs until mid-winter. Lots of other butterflies there now, fratillaries, swallowtails, etc.

    Any butterflies this week?

No from 2nd week of October to 2nd week of February. It is quite the site to see.

Any Butteflies this week ? Are they gone?

Yes, very active after the morning chill wears off. View from a sunshine exposure area.

    Are the butterflies here still?

    Yes, until February.

    Are there butterflies here?

Hi, yes there are! The annual migration is under way and if you're lucky enough to be near Pismo Beach, this week the interpretive center has set up binoculars and monoscopes to view them.

What about mid October? Any butterflies then? ?

Hi Cary! I was there last week and there were a few, but not a ton. It's still a beautiful walk nonetheless.

A cute little hidden neighborhood Park, named after the Chumash, with some nice surprises!…read more If you are looking for a serene break from the madness of the across the 101 Pismo Outlet complex & have kids who need to burn some energy, this is a great safe spot [but beware of POISON OAK & the hidden POND(s)]. Likewise, if you are older, the 1 mile dirt valley hiking trail uphill is a nice diversion. Fortunately for all, the Bathrooms are decent, and there are picnic tables too. The playground is far nicer than what you would expect and have floor cushions all the way around. There is the usual Jungle Gym theme plus some swings. All seems to be designed for safety, but just outside there are warning signs for Poison Oak, and the land dips into a small stream, a marsh, and a pond.... so you still have to keep an eye on little ones. There is no fence to prevent wandering here. The hiking trail is quite modest, but since it is uphill & about a mile, you can get your cardio. This is a valley, so it can be prone to some flooding in the wet season. The trail is verdant & it is super-nice until you hit an abrupt end at a private ranch...but fear not...use your Goggle & you can see a plethora of other "local's only" Parks & much longer hiking trails in or near this area. As you head down this trail during the late afternoon, you can see the sparkling Pacific over the Pismo Outlet stores. This hidden Park is an ideal get away from the mad crowds of the Outlet stores. Next to the Outlet stores is an open mall with a great Bagel shop, a Pie shop, a Pizza shop, & the Cal-Fresh Supermarket has decent take out meals/sandwiches/food bar. You then, just have to drive just across the overpass, make a left onto Jamesway, and on your immediate right, you can find this Picnic & kid friendly park. Since it is rather hidden, it is so easy to miss, so look at your GPS map. This idea is a far nicer & healthier choice than to join the multitude at the crappy fast-food places next to the Outlet stores. Of course, you can also get take out junk food & bring that here, but please do not litter. I have no clue as to why I missed reviewing this place years ago, but here it is. If you are curious & into local history, you can also explore the side streets, for the even more hidden, Price House & "Historical Price House Park". You can look at both the Yelp Park listing & "Anniversary Price House" listing for my pics & details. Visits to inside the restored Price House happen from time to time, but you need to be either a donor, get emails, or check out facebook to be aware. While I lucked out & had a short personal tour for helping out, the house itself is not open to the public. The Park is open and is quite quiet, but there are no facilities. It does have nice wildflowers in the Spring. All of these local Parks are surrounded by rampant over-development....some of which polluted the local streams & marshes beyond repair. Anyway, this is a quiet neighborhood park, so please be good citizens. Thanks & enjoy!
