I've been going to Monarch Cakes since I was a boy. It produced wonderment and joy in me then, and still does to this day. It is a family-owned business and that makes all the difference. These people REALLY care about the quality and reputation of their work. One taste will confirm that it has been made with love. So much has, sadly, been changed about St. Kilda and much of its unique spirit killed to enrich developers. But, Monarch Cakes still stands as the last bastion of St. Kilda's little Europe. Nikki and her dad Gideon are superb hosts and make everyone feel welcome. You can see their pride, joy and love for their product on their faces. I have travelled all over the world, but never, even in L.A and New York tasted a cheesecake more delicious than theirs, which is based on a Polish recipe over 100 years old. Another delight is their lemon tart, but be warned it can be addictive. I was only there, again, days ago and sat at a small table looking out at the people walking by. I felt lost in time to another era, when it was a simpler, slower world where people did the right thing. I sipped my hot chocolate and slowly ate my cheesecake and felt time was somehow suspended. In that cozy memory-filled interior I somehow felt safe. Welcomed. And home.

Easily the most authentic feeling cake shop on the strip. The interior is original and gives a taste of what it was in the 30's. Cheesecake and kugelhoupf the top picks

It's one of those bakery cafes that doesn't stand out, but serves sincere and great pastry and cakes with nice coffees. Enjoyed their traditional best cheesecake (light and cakey texture with a hint of fresh lemon), apple crumbles, cherry crumbles and poppy seed cake.

One of the famous cake shops on Acland st in St Kilda, Monarch cake shop offers some of the finest coffee, pastries and desserts you will find. In comparison to the other cake shops on the street, the window dispay is not quite as awe inspiring, but the offerings are great and are definitely worth a go. Monarch cakes is most specifically known for their chocolate kuglehopf, which is a melt in your mouth piece of heaven. How to describe it? Well, its a dense cake that to me is right between a cake and a pastry, with flaky pieces that ooze a rich chocolate at every fold. It is a european dessert, that the French claim as their own, though legend has it that Marie Antoinette brought the recipe with her. In addition to this, there are many, MANY ,more selections, most notably the large array of gluten free offerings, which I know can be hard to find for our intolerant friends. Wash it all down with a latte and I think theres no better way to treat yourself!

Tried chocolate kugelhoupf. It tasted bland like cocoa powder with flour and slightly sweetened. Was not that good and I have a pretty low bar. But service was good. They charge by weight which was convenient.

The cheesecake and lemon tart were delicious, but the woman at the counter wasn't particularly friendly. Maybe she's tired of tourists?

Best coffee on the strip at st Kilda. Good looking cakes too, all served by authentic hipsters (with caps and moustaches and everything)

Coffee is the only let down - it's fine, but not excellent. Atmosphere/service: There are a couple of tables inside and a few out on the street. We will often try to sit in if there is space, but it's definitely more of a takeaway bakery. Space is very limited and the few tables that are there only seat 2 people. Service is efficient and friendly, not much chit-chat, mostly due to the nature of the place, but pleasant and smiley. Would I recommend it: Yes! Their cakes are spot on. Don't go for the coffee, or fancy service, but if you want delicious, classic baked goods, this is a real hidden gem! Quality surpasses many of the flashier places on nearby Chapel Street, but you'd walk past this bakery 10 times before you even realised it was there.

When my husband said "Merci" to our server, she quickly asked, "Vous parlez le francais?" We were there for breakfast and luckily there was one almond croissant left when I placed my order. If they were all sold out, I would have been heart broken. Almond croissants are my favorite and I tend to like to judge a place by its almond croissants (and macarons). The croissant was not the flaky and airy type but instead was a little more dense with a generous amount of almond paste filling. There might even be a hint of almond liqueur in it. Although I'm used to airy croissants, I must say that I really like French Fantasies' interpretation of almond croissant. My husband had the minced pie which he really liked as well especially the pastry crust. Step in here for a nice breakfast and then head out for some fun shopping on Toorak Rd and Chapel St.

Indeed I was so overcome with pastry ecstasy that the thought planning our cross-continental wedding in six months seemed totally feasible. Truly, though, we feel lucky that French Fantasies is a short walk from home. It's the most authentic French bakery in the area, bolstered by its native French speaking staff and commitment to the excessive butter required for this type of blissed-out baking. We come here for classics like croissants and savory crepes (the spinach and bechamel is simple and gorgeous). And for that, plus a nice cup of coffee, it's perfection.

On those seedy mornings I'd find a spot inside, bury my head in a newspaper, sunglasses firmly planted on my face, and just give the staff that knowing look of "either kill me, or bring me coffee". I forgot how much I loved the friendly staff, the relaxed vibe and the extensive menu with plenty of options for those needing a healthy, filling and/or greasy brunch. They really cover all the bases here and now, guess what!? (You'll never guess) They're opening for dinners, offering a wide variety of pizzas and their own homemade cheeses! I have to admire them for going to the effort of bringing in their own cheesemakers and offering something a little different, though I think the menu could be a little shorter so that they could focus on nailing a smaller selection. My tip? Stick to the fresh cheeses - ricotta, scormoza and mozzerella. Oh, and don't you dare not have an Aperol Spritz.
