Monarch delivered one of the best dining experiences I've had in Dallas. The standout for me was the short rib pasta it was rich, flavorful, and easily one of the best pasta dishes I've had anywhere in the city. The short rib was incredibly tender and paired perfectly with the sauce. I also started with the meatballs, which made for an excellent appetizer. They were packed with flavor, perfectly cooked, and a great way to begin the meal. The biggest surprise of the night was the garlic mashed potatoes. Without question, they were the best mashed potatoes I've had at a restaurant in Dallas. They were creamy, buttery, and loaded with just the right amount of garlic. Between the outstanding food, beautiful atmosphere, and attention to detail, Monarch absolutely lives up to its reputation. Wow, I was so utterly surprised at this restaurant. For spending a total of $1k for three people, I expected sooo much more. I had 9:30pm reservations on the 4th of July for the prefix menu with the booth/window seating ($175 each just for the window seating) only to be sat 20 minutes late. The entire point of the reservation was to watch the start of the fireworks at 9:30pm. When asked for updates, the hostess just shrugged and said they could not do anything about it. No compensation was offered for this either. The saddest part was the food. We requested medium rare filets and received bloody, almost gelatinous rare meat. I'm not opposed to rare, but this was weirdly raw. And the seasoning was just odd. I can honestly say this was the worst fillet I've had in Texas yet. The 2 pros? Obviously the view and an adorable server. But unfortunately, these two could never draw me back to this restaurant again. read more

49 floors up to see a lot of Dallas. Pretty sweet. You can even look out and down on Reunion Tower. The National Building houses residents and diners. There are separate elevators so the residents are not annoyed with the restaurant traffic. It's vest to valet park, because it is...downtown Dallas. We held reservations for the Monarch's mother's day brunch. They held a meal with minimal breakfast selections for $125 per person. Small muffins, cheeses, and fruit were served first. Then you could select an entree of macaroni and cheese, eggs benedict, filet of sole (do not order this - tough and might have been less than 1 oz). For dessert we had strawberry shortcake. People were nice. The elevator operators were the most informative about the building and the restaurants. I loved the fact that the Monarch opened its doors early so kids could bring their mothers, but i was not impressed with the food quality or taste. The service was OK. The restaurant was over-crowded. The parking was crazy and out of the way - vehicle retrieval was not the same place as drop-off. I got the whipped ricotta with focaccia - the whipped was real good on the crispy/fluffy texture of the bread. Mother's Day brunch at Monarch. Will have to come back for dinner and check it out. Reserved the window upgraded table. Spectacular views and certainly worth it when you consider how much the brunch is going to cost anyway. Service by Thomas was personable and simply exceptional. It was definitely a nice and relaxing brunch with a fantastic view. My wife started with the Queen Bee cocktail, which she loved! I had some chamomile tea. No teabags here, just fresh leaf. For the fixed menu, there were optional upgrades with each course but your only real choice was for your entrée. We upgraded our starters with the caviar deviled eggs. They were very good and my wife thought these were the best deviled eggs she had ever tasted. The eggs were served with the first course, which was a small charcuterie board and a basket of delicious biscuits and muffins. I can't emphasize how good the biscuits and muffins were. For our entrée, we both had the lobster eggs Benedict. Not much lobster that you could taste (very small chunks) but overall it was delicious and the eggs were perfectly poached. It came with sides of pork, belly, fried potato, and Italian meatballs. My wife raved about the potato. We weren't huge fans of the other two sides though. Dessert was a spectacular strawberry shortcake. Delicious but unfortunately, very filling. Even more unfortunate we couldn't stop ourselves from consuming it. When the bill came, I was a little disappointed to see that they had already included a 20% tip in the bill for a party of two. I was going to tip more, but I hate when the tip is hidden like that. I say hidden because there was still a line for a tip that did not note it was an additional tip. It would have been easy to miss and double tipped. I assume they do that because some people must not be tipping at brunch. I'm just glad I caught it and didn't double up on the tip. I did leave an additional tip because of how well the service went and how great the meal was. Speaking of tipping, I always tip the valet, but I have not encountered where they charge me $13.50 and then want a 20 to 25% tip on top of that to park my car. Yes, I could have pushed the "custom tip" button and not tipped, but that would've been awfully awkward and it wasn't worth it on Mother's Day. I visited Monarch on multiple occasions, but this past weekend was my absolute favorite. The service was immaculate. The attention to detail that we received was incredible. Now let's get into the food my friend got the chicken and I ordered and we had multiple sides as you can see in the pictures. He said his chicken was juicy and flavorful. I enjoyed my Branzino, but it was a little salty, but I believe it was because of the capers. All of our sides were top-tier. The anolini and mushrooms were amazing. Dining here feels like an experience from the moment you walk in. The ambiance is stunning with strong art deco vibes that make the whole space feel glamorous and elevated. The views are incredible if you can snag a window seat, and watching the Dallas skyline while you eat really adds to the whole experience. Can I give this place 6 stars? This place is exceptional. On the 49th floor of the National building downtown Dallas with great views overlooking the city. Fine dining with a dress code. No flip flops, jeans, athleisure, ball caps, or t-shirts. Men should wear a collard shirt, nice pants, and dress shoes. Several men were in suits. Several women were in nice dresses and heels. You do not want to show up underdressed. Reservations are recommended. There's the dining room and the lounge (bar area). The lounge serves the full menu but if you're with a group and eating a full dinner go for the dining room. There's a happy hour menu for the lounge which is great if you're looking for small bites and drinks. Everything we ate was spectacular. We focused on pescatarian dishes-oysters, crudo, etc. All pasta is freshly made in house. These aren't large portions. I would not plan on sharing with someone. Our server, Vivian, was phenomenal. Very attentive without being overbearing. She created meaningful conversations and explained menu items. The Sommelier was also very engaging and helpful when we ordered dessert wines (Sauternes, Vin Santo). Beautiful Riedel stemware. Fun tip: the last stall in the ladies room has a big window with a view of the city. Alarming at first but pretty cool. Wanted an intimate place for a great date night. This place was definitely it as long as you are not afraid of heights. They sat us by the window and the view from the 49th floor was amazing.. The server Jordan was top notch. She explained the menu so well, it made it harder for us to choose what we wanted to eat. We started with the meatballs and the Focaccia. Definitely worth it. Then split the veal parmigiana. The portion size did not disappoint. Charlie also continued to wait on our table and clear the dishes and ensure the drinks were always filled. We are really bad at making reservations ahead of time, so the only reservation available for the night we went was 9:15pm; however, we were able to go to the lounge / bar area for some appetizers and drinks earlier before we were seated. The restaurant is beautiful. Located on the 49th floor of the building that shares the Thompson hotel. The restaurant is huge and takes up the entire floor. The lounge / bar area and the first section of the dining room appears a bit crammed and loud, but we were seating in the back where the tables and more spaced out. This place accommodates large groups, and I love the ambiance. While we were waiting for our table, we had the charred octopus as an appetizer. It was a small shareable portion. I enjoyed the puree citrusy sauce it came with along with the candied walnuts that complimented the salty citrusy flavor. We ordered the focaccia bread with whipped ricotta. The ricotta was so light and airy and tasted well with the whipped ricotta. Ricotta was whipped with truffle, honey, and olives on top. Absolutely delightful. For entrees, we ordered Momma's Spicy Rigatoni alla Vodka and Wood Grilled Branzino with a side of garlic whipped mashed potatoes. I'm always a bit hesitant to order fish anywhere because I hate overcooked or dry fish, but the branzino was super moist and tender! I loved the charred skin on the fish as well. The spicy rigatoni tasted as described on the menu - smooth as silk with crispy garlic. The sauce was a bit spicy too, and tasted like very smooth creamy tomato soup but saucy. One of the best sauces I've ever had! The garlic whipped mashed potatoes wasn't too garlicy at all. In fact, it probably could've used more garlic, but it was so smooth and light and ultra buttery. It was a bit on the salty side but overall the whipped potatoes tasted amazing! Round #2! We went to Monarch for my birthday and had a great time celebrating. Of course, the food and drinks are expensive- Monarch does not misrepresent their prices. The appetizers were delicious especially the meatballs and the barata and focaccia! Once again, the ROASTED CHICKEN STOLE THE SHOW! It's incredibly juicy, there's so much food, and I have yet to have a chicken that compares (honestly, that comes even close). While the scallops were enjoyed, they're not the most filling item. Finally made it to Monarch which has been on my list for a long time and the atmosphere was amazing, especially the views overlooking downtown Dallas. The service was very nice and the food was exceptional. Nothing beats the truffle risotto and garlic mash potatoes for sides. The only con would be the portion sizes of the main dishes were very small. My friends and I split the shrimp ravioli and vodka rigatoni. Both were very flavorful (the shrimp dish was slightly better), but I left feeling like I wanted more pasta. We also tried the dessert options with the chocolate cake and lemon cake (pictured below). The lemon cake was tart and refreshing, but the chocolate cake had an overpowering peanut butter flavor which was a hit or miss at the table. Even with a reservation, we still waited about 20-30 mins to be seated, so I'm guessing this place stays pretty busy. They do have a dress code, but it was a mix of some people who were super dressed up, others looked more semi casual but still polished. The food didn't disappoint. The spicy rigatoni was easily one of the best I've had. The mashed potatoes were smooth, creamy, and had just the right amount of butter. I also loved the truffle risotto. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday because we had such a great experience the last time we came about two years ago. Back then, the whole evening felt elegant and intentional from start to finish -- the champagne upon arrival, the warm welcome from the entrance all the way up the elevator, and the level of customer service, especially from our waiter. It felt like a genuinely elevated experience, so naturally, we expected that again. Unfortunately, things have clearly changed, and not for the better. The first sign was when we arrived at the Thompson. There was no one there to greet guests or direct anyone, so we had to figure out where the elevator was and basically guess which floor to go to. That may seem minor, but it was one of those details that used to make the experience feel polished. The dress code also stood out. From the time I booked until the day of the reservation, I received multiple texts making sure we acknowledged it. And to be clear, I actually understand that. If a restaurant wants to present itself as elegant and elevated, it makes sense to want guests to match that energy. So we dressed accordingly. But once we got there, it was obvious the dress code was not being enforced at all. On the elevator, a woman got on with us wearing a snapback, an oversized jacket, biker shorts, and bedazzled heels. Again, no judgment, but after all the reminders, I assumed there was no way she was headed to Monarch. She was. Inside, we saw Jordans, t-shirts, baseball caps, and even a completely see-through dress. It made all those repeated dress code texts feel pointless. When we were seated, they put us at a table that could easily fit four to six people, which felt odd for a birthday dinner for two, especially since I had booked a couple of weeks in advance. The service was also lacking. Our waiter was nice enough, but spoke very low and very fast, so it was hard to hear them. On top of that, they would quickly walk away and then be gone for long stretches before returning. I had also let the restaurant know ahead of time that it was my girlfriend's birthday. They brought out a custom printed menu with her name on it, which was a nice gesture. But even that felt like a downgrade. The one they gave her looked noticeably cheaper than the one they gave me on my birthday two years ago. Smaller photo, less detail, no nice border -- just another sign that corners had been cut. As for the food and drinks, my girlfriend's French 75 was honestly the best thing we had all night. The lasagna was decent, but not worth the price. The branzino was cooked well but had almost no flavor, so we sent it back and replaced it with the salmon. When we got home and tried the salmon, it was incredibly bland too -- zero salt, zero pepper, no real seasoning at all. The risotto had decent flavor, but the texture was gritty and seemed slightly undercooked. The asparagus was fine, but nothing special. Overall, the restaurant quality, food quality, and customer service have all gone down. For the prices they charge, those things should be the baseline. I would not recommend it based on this experience. read more

My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner here on a Sunday evening. We booked a 5:45pm reservation, arrived by 5:20pm, and were seated around 5:35pm. Our server, Juan, was attentive and hilarious. Our waters were never empty. Food was delicious. We ordered meatball, prosciutto and mozzarella salad, shrimp scampi ravioli, and the risotto, with two mocktails, and chocolate cake. All of it was cooked very well. We preferred the meatballs and salad to the pastas but it wasn't due to any of it being poorly made. The ravioli had an amazing texture, I was not a huge fan of shrimp stuffing. The risotto was very good but too salty for our tastes. We'll be back. We spent about $185 (including tip/tax) for our 2 hour dining excursion. Without mocktails or dessert would have brought that down to around $150. We were seated by one of the best viewing areas. All night people were coming by to take photos. Came here for Valentine's Day and my partner and I left feeling underwhelmed. For a Michelin recommended restaurant, we expected more thoughtfully layered flavors and at least one true wow moment. Unfortunately, there wasn't one. Service was polite but lacked the attentiveness and polish that should accompany a dining experience at this level. Servers should have enough knowledge and mannerism to deliver chef's intention to dishes. It didn't feel elevated just average. Im fact, the appetizers below average with saltiness and over seasoned tartare and carpaccio. We opted to pay extra for window seating, which we were happy to do. However, we were initially told it was $75 without clarification that this was per person. It ultimately came out to $150 per person, which felt misleading but miscommunication happens. The view is beautiful, and I understand Dallas doesn't have many high rise dining options. But a view alone can't compensate fo the experience we had at this cost. Given the Michelin recognition, I expected far more in both execution and service. My family and I used to love Monarch and made it a point to visit every time I was in town. Unfortunately, the experience has gone completely downhill, and they've stripped away the special touches that used to justify the high prices--there is no more champagne welcome in the lobby, and they've eliminated the complimentary table bread. The real dealbreaker was the lack of transparency and sneaky upcharges at the bar. We ordered two Old Fashioneds--one from the $15 Happy Hour menu and one with Woodford Reserve Double Oak--and asked for them to be smoked. Without any warning or communication from the bartender, my $15 drink was billed at $25 (a $10 markup just for smoke), and my family member's drink came out to a staggering $50. Charging $50 for a basic Old Fashioned is ridiculous and excessive, especially when I've had similar high-quality cocktails elsewhere for $18. The dinner service didn't make up for it, either. The steaks were just okay and nothing special, while the pasta portions were microscopic. Dallas has way too many amazing dining options to tolerate this drop in quality and hidden fees. I had a really nice birthday dinner at Monarch. Their reputation is well deserved and we can't wait to return! I highly recommend, especially when celebrating a special occasion. When entering the lobby, you'll quickly see that Monarch is a whole vibe.....very classy, upscale, and romantic. We were checked in & served champagne for our elevator ride to the 49th floor. Lovely touch! They sat us at a window seat since we were celebrating my birthday! The view was phenomenal and made the experience so much nicer and intimate. Service was top notch throughout the evening and our server, Denise, was fun. On to the food. Overall, dinner was great and one of the nicer meals we've had in Dallas. They recommend doing it family style, which we usually do anyway. We started with fritto misto. This was some of the best fritto misto we've ever had. We've even had it quite a few times in Italy and this dish was up there! It includes shrimp, calamari, and halibut chunks. The red sauce is chef's kiss! We also tried the John Dory, shrimp scampi ravioli, and whipped potatoes. The John Dory fish was on the dry side, so our least fave. Next time we'll try the king crab and branzino. The shrimp scampi ravioli and whipped potatoes were both very good. I'm a potato girl that loves good mashed potatoes and these were top tier. We ended our meal with the tableside tiramisu and it didn't disappoint. It's made like tiramisu should be....with very simple, high quality ingredients. The portion is large as well. It's enough for 2-3 people. Tips: You always need a reservation and if you use valet, remember to retrieve your vehicle from the 1st floor, not at the 2nd floor lobby entrance. read more
