Sadly not a lot reviews here to really be fair to the absolutely beautiful place. Located at the base of San Isabel National Forest. Stunning views of Taylor Mountain and a short 10 minute drive to Monarch Pass. Plenty of hiking and trout fishing right there!! You are right along the river so bug spray is recommended if you're allergic! There's about 20 RV sites and 17 tent sites currently, plenty of space to build on more. I met Fred the owner and his wife sweetest people ever. John is the General Manager there is no Mike that works there. I originally only booked 2 days but after getting there I decided to book 2 more. They were already booked but John said give me till the following day and I'll see if I can make room. Sure enough he came through! Also saw they were going to be doing yoga there June of 2020. Nice bath house with hot showers and cleaned daily!! The decor of the property is intentional rustic despair! It kinda sets ya back into those times!

Such nice place to enjoy the mountains, river, and a real fire

Almost a seemingly perfect oasis, hidden in this small drainage along the left side of the incline up monarch pass.

Great views, weird neighbors, and bring quarters!…read more We stayed on the non-marina side because someone said the fishing was better over there. Spoiler: it wasn't. Pretty sure the fish took a vacation. Or maybe they just hate us. Getting to the other side of the reservoir felt like a side quest in an off-brand video game -- bumpy roads, no idea how far we were actually going, but somehow it took forever. Definitely earned our snacks that day. We were off-grid RVing and used solar -- plenty of sunshine (yay Colorado!), and the panels worked great. Bathrooms were drop toilets (two in our loop), surprisingly clean for what they are -- rustic but not revolting. We drove to the shower house and THANK GOODNESS we had cash because it was $1 for 4 minutes, and you bet we were in there with a full stack of quarters like it was 1995 at the arcade. Clean showers. Flush toilets. Glorious. Some quirks: - Our fire ring looked like it hosted a frat party the night before. Lots of ash, trash, and mystery items. - Patrol truck drove by once at 8:30pm and then vanished into the night like a park ranger ninja. - Two entire families camped in the parking lot overnight. With kids. Just chilling. Not in sites. Just... existing there. We're heading back soon but staying on the marina side, because we enjoy actual campsites and the illusion of order. ‍ Overall: beautiful location, lots of sun, potential for fish (maybe), and absolutely bring quarters if you enjoy hygiene.

Unbelievable scenery and for a whopping 10 dollar day pass, you can't beat it. We drove the entire…read moreway stopping several times to take in the beauty. Lots of places to pull over and have a picnic, stretch your legs and just relax. The road needs to be graded, lots of washboards that will just about shake you out of your vehicle, which is why I only gave 4 stars. Well worth the visit and will do it again!!

This was my first stop when I arrived at Twin lakes, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a forest…read moreservice employee on site actively talking to visitors and answering questions they might have about the location. He was very friendly and polite and had a lot of information to share. From the parking area there are several paths that can be taking to either scale the small hill leading to a half dozen picnic tables and park grills, or that lead down to the shoreline. The grills seemed to be moderately maintained with a couple of them overflowing with charred debris, but the tables looked to be maintained fairly well. The best viewing spot was at the crest of the hill which let you see out over the entire lake and into the small valley leading to the adjoining lake. There is also a small boat ramp with its own parking area separate from the campground area that is obscured from view helping with the seclusion of the campground. The actual grounds in the non parking area are completely natural and unaltered being left up to natures choices, which is mostly covered in rocks and sparse patches of high mountain grasses. Also at the parking entrance is a small building with restrooms, that are mildly maintained and cleaned, although they were adequate for a camping environment. Overall, this is a nice little camping area with access to some incredible lake views, park grills, and fishing locations.

For only $17.00 per night ($8.50 if you have an interagency access pass), the campground has potable water, vaulted toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. There is a boat launch, and the one or two boats we've seen throughout our stays seem to have the pristine lake all to themselves. Our first overnight stay was a new moon, and the Milky Way and the sheer amount of stars was captivating -- and waking up that next morning and opening our tent to the sun rising over the lake and the mountains... well, it doesn't get much better than that. Make sure you grab whatever you'll need before you arrive. The nearest towns with services are Leadville, Buena Vista, or Aspen -- a minimum of 20 miles away. This campground is truly a hidden gem.
