So the abandoned home in what I thought was Maysville CO, is actually the last standing structure of what was once Arboursville, CO on the monarch spur campground. First established in 1879, after silver was discovered on nearby monarch mountain . The old mining town was flocked to and a man built this three story parlor style home around 1890, "It was constructed using concrete and glacial stone aggregate - an unusual choice for that time, but the reason it is still standing strong today. The six-inch thick walls were reinforced with horizontal steel cables. The construction date is a guess, as Chaffee County has no official record of the house being built." Started out as a stagecoach stop for the toll road up monarch mountain, and then became a very well known brothel. Last known resident died in 1957. There are other structures on the original homestead which looks to be that of a small family farm. Other neat things I found on the property other than the south Arkansas river running through the property, was lots of natural quartz ( good hint that there was gold or silver nearby maybe even still to this day). We found wild raspberries, yucca, apples and also rose hip, willow trees..poppy flowers, irises, wild orchids and other plants and flowers suggesting that I was probably standing in the original garden area of the once beautiful thriving homestead. Also noticing the variety of scat, ranging from deer to elk, lots of chipmunks and the nearby river had plenty of small fish. Almost a seemingly perfect oasis, hidden in this small drainage along the left side of the incline up monarch pass. If the walls could talk, I am sure they would have a very intriguing story. Though given the amount of aspens covering the property... these hills do have eyes ...as well as the walls on upper left window upstairs. Speaking on the walls, we noticed newspaper along the basement/ root cellar walls that had dates ranging from 1940-1952. The property is now a campground for tent camping along the river or RV giving you access to these beautiful trails and rich history of southern colorado. The owners are amazing and they have set up a very beautiful place to stay. We always enjoy our time in this hidden gem! And will continue to return each other! Just a beautiful place ! read more

Monarch Spur Rv Park - Camping June 1st - Campgrounds Near Me - Salida, Colorado

Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. This campground was a huge disappointment and a total waste of money. We were charged $40 for a dry camping spot -- no water, no electric, no sewage -- which is outrageously overpriced for what you get. To make things worse, the campsite was completely infested with red ants. There was a massive colony right where we had to park, and they swarmed our camper and our poor dog, who ended up covered in bites. When we told the owner about the infestation, he handed us a couple of cheap ant traps and told us to deal with it ourselves -- he wouldn't even bother to spray. The site itself wasn't level, and it's right next to the highway, so be prepared to hear Jake brakes and traffic noise all night long. We asked if he'd at least throw in some firewood considering the price, and he just said he'd give us "rotten firewood." The owner was rude, arrogant, and completely unhelpful from the moment we arrived. $40 is far too much for any dry campsite -- especially one that's full of ants and highway noise. There are far better places to spend your money where the owners actually care about their guests. We will never stay here again, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Owner should not advertise that you have internet. The only place to get internet is at the office but it was strong at the office. Would not be a problem if I could get cell service but no cell service. Our furnace was not working so I had a small heater that I wanted to use to take the chill off. Heater would not stay on only about a minute. I was ready to throw away the heater. Now we are at a state park in New Mexico paying $17 a night instead of $60 and the heater is working fine. read more

The park is beautiful and Scott and April go above and beyond to be great hosts. We had an electrical problem with our trailer and Scott came over and helped in the freezing cold at night even though it was not a camp ground issue. Wonderful people and a wonderful place. This place is beautiful. It's high in the mountains, right on the river, has big trees, lots of birds, AND NEW OWNERS!! HIGHLY recommended!!

Park has new owners. Very nice family. Bathrooms and laundry have been improved and are very nice. Cabins have been remodeled and spruced up. Gas grills, outdoor furniture and fire pits provided. Grounds have been manicured and old buildings, campers etc have been hauled off. New playground being erected. Park has great large tent sites along the river. Lots of shade, nice rock fire pits. Community meeting/fire pit area. Covered gathering area with gas grills. Shaded RV sites with new picnic tables and fire pits. Park is located right along a river. It has a cooling effect, pleasant sounds and good fishing. Walking distance to one lake. 1 mile drive to Foss Lake. Close to Monarch Pass Ski area. Day trips to Canon, Gunnison, Created Butte, Buena Vista, West Cliff. Nearby Hiking, biking, fishing, shopping, county gun and archery range. New owners bringing an old park back up from the ashes. read more

The place is quaint with tight drive ways, , the worst part was the grumpy gray haired guy .. not only is he unfriendly when you check in, but he chases you if you go over 5 mph, husband wasn't going over 7 mph and he chased us down like a cop. Then argued that we were wrong. Told us to get our speedometer fixed. Will NEVER stay here again, nor will I suggest to Our RV friends. Spots are really really tight, if you are over 36 feet, good luck ! Tree branches scraping your rig, if you are in the back row, be prepared to ask the people in front of you to move so you can get out. John, the general manager, is the rudest person I've ever worked with. Didn't park where he wanted and he came in hot with his gun strapped to his side calling names and saying I'm a f***ing idiot. Then charged extra for parking in the wrong spot. The whole place is a fire hazard too. SO much dead time we around the whole campground. Tried to use some as firewood and was charged for firewood as well. Doing the man a favor considering the condition of the site. I do not recommend ever going here. It's not worth the $25/ night to tent camp and be watched like a hawk and berated for any minor mistake. read more

Sadly not a lot reviews here to really be fair to the absolutely beautiful place. Located at the base of San Isabel National Forest. Stunning views of Taylor Mountain and a short 10 minute drive to Monarch Pass. Plenty of hiking and trout fishing right there!! You are right along the river so bug spray is recommended if you're allergic! There's about 20 RV sites and 17 tent sites currently, plenty of space to build on more. I met Fred the owner and his wife sweetest people ever. John is the General Manager there is no Mike that works there. I originally only booked 2 days but after getting there I decided to book 2 more. They were already booked but John said give me till the following day and I'll see if I can make room. Sure enough he came through! Also saw they were going to be doing yoga there June of 2020. Nice bath house with hot showers and cleaned daily!! The decor of the property is intentional rustic despair! It kinda sets ya back into those times! read more

Made our reservation to stay back in March. We called 2 weeks before our trip to make sure everything was good. It was and they sent us our confirmation for the stay. We arrived on Saturday, June 24 our reserved time and Elsie (the owner) ,who is an unpleasant woman to deal with, informs us that they are booked full. So much for making a reservation with them! So even if you have a reservation with a confirmation, don't count on actually having a place to stay with them when you arrive after driving for days! Do yourself a favor and FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO STAY!!! It will be better and less stress in the long run! read more

I paid cash for #17-37.00 and pulled in. My wife, who is sensitive to mosquito bites, saw the creek in front of the space. She got worried that she would get bitten again and her hives would return. Within five minutes I walk back to the office and explained to Mike. That the possibility of mosquito bites dictated that we leave. He gave me a look of disgust, said nothing, and pointed to a hand printed notice on the desk that said if you decide to leave after you pay, there is no refund. I still feel he should have refunded the $. I should have paid with credit card and stopped payment. read more

Stayed here Jul 17-19,2020 with a 20 foot trailer. Very nice, great tent sites, fairly leveled spots, nearby pond for fishing. Be sure to get supplies in Salida though. They had singing entertainment Robert Clarkson as the local talent - enjoyed the music. Lots of trees, pine, aspen. Rained some, and was cool whilst Denver and the plains was hot. Will return as it is a good base for fly fishing the surrounding areas. read more

This place was AWESOME we were traveling through in our 60 foot rig on our way to estes park but we wanted to check out Salida but wanted a out of the way place we found this RV Park on yelp and called they said they had one spot left they took our name and said they would hold it for us didn't even ask for a credit card..we got there and everyone was so nice and welcoming it was like coming home THANK YOU we will definitely come back!!!! My wife and I stayed in one of the cabins in August 2013. We immediately noticed a rancid smell but the owners assured us the plumbing problem was fixed and be gone within a day. We even asked to see the other cabin. The second cabin smelled worse than ours and was covered with mice droppings. After the second night we both began to feel sick. We thought it was just the altitude. At day number five we were completely sick and had to move out of the cabin. I spoke with the Chaffee County Health Dept and they were concerned it may have been overrun with rats. Sure enough they checked it out and rats were living under the cabin. The smell was all the droppings once it absorbed moisture and heated up. Our final stop was the hospital to be checked for the Hanta Virus. Luckily it was not contracted. Our perfect two week vacation was absolutely wrecked by their cabins. It took another five days before we started to feel better. The sad reality of this is that I tried to plead with the owners to not rent these cabins any more and she got a pissy attitude and said I'm not getting a refund for the nights we stayed (never asked for a refund or discount). I'm giving this stay ONE STAR but only for Mother Nature. This poor place is in the worst state of disrepair I have ever seen- from the office to the small, shared open spaces. After a 4 day stay, the dumpsters were stuffed & trash laid all around it (so much for concerns of bears) trash, ancient - filthy patio furniture, and broken lawn equipment & playground parts lay everywhere. We stayed in one of the two cabins, The Patriot. Getting set up we found that the stove did not work. We went back to the office and reported this to the staff. We learned they knew the stove did not work and did not bother telling us, letting us find out on our own. We were allowed to use the kitchen in an apartment attached to the office. This was not close to our cabin which was up a very steep hill. To actually cook our meals we had to pack up our food and cooking gear, drive to the apartment, cook, clean up, pack up again, and return to our cabin to unload. When cooking breakfast the next day we met a woman reporting she was the owner. We asked for a break on the cost of our stay. She was very condescending stating we were the first people to want to use the stove all summer insinuating this was our fault and refused to reduce the price! The rudeness and unfriendly attitude of this lady was the most disappointing aspect of our stay. The setting of this campsite is pretty, but has quite a bit of noise from the highway. read more
