Super cool local gem in Oakville that offers a surprisingly large variety and affordable prices on Italian imported groceries, freshly baked goods, hot prepared food, and more! Every time I come here I find that the average demographic leans a bit older so I'd like to share with younger people especially if you like to cook with hard to find ingredients. This place is especially great if you love making Italian dishes and baked goods like me and don't want to drive all the way out towards Mississauga and spend more than anticipated at other specialty stores, or even somewhere like Fortino's where you get charged an arm and a leg for certain produce and meat. Everything here is so fresh, and I love that they sell their prepared handmade pasta at the hot table for CHEAP. I got one serving of their handmade tortellini in alfredo sauce for just $6.99 and I was able to make two meals out of it without any extra sides or drinks. I haven't tried anything else because they had already closed most of the hot table when I got the tortellini but what was still out looked really good. Their desserts are pretty good too, I prefer their cookies over their cakes as I feel I've had better elsewhere, but nonetheless have a great selection with good pricing as well. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area, I feel like even if you came in without the intention of buying something, you'll still manage to make a purchase of some sort lol. read more

I had an awful experience with this store. I ordered their catering online for my dad's 80th birthday party. Unfortunately 3 weeks before his party he had a really bad fall and had to be airlifted to the hospital. I called the bakery almost 12 days in advance - more than enough time before they even began prepping anything for this small party - and they refused. Well actually, the employee on the phone was extremely unhelpful to begin with and when I requested I talk to the manager they left me waiting for almost 20 minutes on hold. When I did speak with the manager, I explained the situation I believed she understood and offered me a refund. I was clear we were going to rebook the party for the summer time and I'd be sure to call on them again for the order. In the end, I never got the refund. I've emailed the bakery numerous times with no response. I was even warned it was pointless to email customer service as I would not get a response. What honest business does that? So we are going ahead with the party and I highly recommend you go with the professionals at Pusateri's or Eataly. It's been a much better more positive and honest experience from the get go. read more

I have had this Italian bakery and grocery store in my bookmarks for few years now and have never had a chance to try it. Last week my wife was talking about having good cannoli's. So I yelped about best cannolis in GTA, and I saw this place in the list. I thought of giving it a try. It's like an hour drive from where we live, however it was worth the drive. I wish I had tried this place before. When we used to live in Edmonton, we were regulars at Italian Shop Center and we couldn't find anything similar to it here in GTA, however our search ends here. This an amazing bakery and grocery store. You will not imagine what all they sell in this medium sized store. They have everything from produce, deli, bakery, hot food section and even take home and ready cook products. We got few pastries, bagels, assorted cookies, take home and bake pizza and few other things like pasta, olives, pizza dough, fruits and croissants. Everything was good and delicious. Our favourite was the pastries, those are not overly sweet, just perfect and very delicious. Only thing that I didn't like was potato wedges, these had too much oil and kinda bland and lady at counter didn't give any kind of dipping sauce or ketchup/hot sauce. Overall a very friendly experience and in last 10 days we have already been there 3 times and we will be there every week!! Amazing place and must try!! read more

One of my favorite stops when I'm visiting family in the area! Their bread selection is amazing. You can get delicious French bread, savory baked goods or sweet delights all in one spot. They have a great selection of small cakes and pastries, as well as large sized ones for parties. An automatic machine, basically a Keurig(? or similar ?) and staff who have no idea what they are doing. Only take-out cups. When you can get a better espresso at St@ryuks why bother. FOOD: I had come here on a busy Saturday morning at around 10:30 am. I had never been here, and had heard a lot of great things about this place therefore, I had wanted to give it a try. Since it wasn't close to lunch yet, I thought I would get a pastry to satisfy my sweet tooth. Therefore, I had settled on a Sicilian Cannoli (Large), which was $2.50 (I had purchased two; one for myself, and one to bring home to my husband). I liked how delicious they looked, and was impressed at the beautiful box that it came-in. After I had purchased my dessert, I decided to look around the shop, at which point, I loved what I saw. They had a hot table, with many lunch items such as pasta, chicken, veal, and other Italian specialities. They also had a coffee bar, with very affordable espressos, and a whole area dedicated to bread, with people lining up to have their bread personally-sliced by two of the store's workers. I loved the freshly-squeezed orange juice, which was completed by a worker right in front of the baked goods section. There was also a deli, which had a worker sampling some cold cuts, and the dessert station was quite large, with a large array of pastries, cookies, and cakes for all occasions. There was also a multitude of Italian products directly from Italy, which spiked my interest as some of the products I was unable to find elsewhere. When I had come home to try the cannoli, I was actually a tad disappointed as the shell was soft. I have had many cannolis in my life, and I have had some that had very soft shells. I was hoping that this would have a hard shell however, it was not to be. The ricotta filling on the inside was very delicious though, and I loved eating it, it was good to the last lick! Overall, I really did enjoy the food offerings at this establishment however, would have loved if the shell on the cannoli was crunchy as opposed to soft. ATMOSPHERE: Since it was a Saturday morning, I knew that I would be walking into a very busy place. Upon entering, I had to get a buggy as I had my toddler with me so, navigating that buggy was a bit challenging as there were a ton of people. However, I did notice that the ordering system at the various departments was very organized, with customers taking numbers, and being called quickly. I noticed there was an older women that worked there, calling out for freshly-cooked ribs, telling us how delicious they were, and urging us to purchase them. It was very noisy though, and the parking was difficult as there were people coming in and out of the shop. When I had paid for my items, the cash register was fast, and I enjoyed that as I found they were effective in helping customers to minimize their wait-time in line. SERVICE: When I had walked-up to the dessert counter, I was served by a kind younger woman, who took my order quickly, then placed it in a box with ease. She was easygoing, and even smiled at my toddler who was trying to climb out of the buggy. I also had the same experience at the cash register, when I had paid for my items, and was greeted by a friendly face at the register, who asked me if I had found everything I was looking for. I have to commend this shop for their wonderful customer service, which made me feel comfortable. COST: 2 Sicilian Cannolis - $2.50 Each x 2: $5.00 + Tax = $5.65 WOULD YOU RETURN? Although I had hoped that the shell on the cannoli were crunchier, I did love the ricotta filling, and also the various products that this shop offered. The customer service has gone to the dogs here. I visited on June 25 to buy some buns for a upcoming flight. At the cash the cashier was rude when I pointed out that the price at the till was different to that on shelf. Luckily one of the floor staff went to take a look and confirmed what I said. He then called a supervisor who came after a long while and dealt with me at a different cash register. She started saying that the price was wrong and she would honour it today, maybe she doesn't know that by law she needs to honour it every time. She then on to say that I should know that those are the wrong buns and started giving me a lecture. I didn't say anything but thought to myself, if your own staff don't know, why should I. At the end, I got there reduced price and just said to her "get your pricing in order". This is what happens when you bus in scab labour from Brampton. I won't ever go back. read more

I feel like it's a right of passage when you live in Oakville to shop at Monastery at least once. It's the cutest family owned bakery and deli in the area. I remember growing up when the store was half the size! It has since taken over a majority of the plaza it's located in. Ok my favourites: - Grab an espresso or cappuccino at the coffee bar to enjoy while you shop, it's very inexpensive but you KNOW they are using the best coffee beans. *I am not sure if this is open during COVID* - The deli has such a variety of quality meats they will slice at your desired thickness. A great place to grab - The pizza dough is some of the best I've had for homemade pizza and it's incredibly inexpensive. They have white and whole wheat! - There's an entire room dedicated to bread and pastries...no really. You can also slice your bread before taking it home. - The 'to-go' counter always has a variety of homemade meals such as pizza, chicken/veal/eggplant parmesan, pasta, potatoes...I will say that this often sells out fast so get there early if you want something ready and hot! I've been going to this place for baked goods since I was in grade 8! I haven't been for a while and decided to get some little desserts today! Grocery: The grocery section is small but it's got everything you need! However, it's quite small and compacted inside so it is kinda of squeeze especially for COVID. Bakery: The bakery was packed with people so you do need to get a ticket and wait for your turn. However it was definitely worth it. Carrot cake: Wow, it was so good! My favourite place to go for carrot cake 9/10, it had lots of flavour and cream cheese filling inside but not too much. Tiramisu: I absolutely love the spongy tiramisu cake. It's got a light coffee flavour. The whole cake is light and creamy, doesn't feel heavy at all. There are walnuts in it, so keep in mind if you have an allergy. 9/10 Chocolate brownie: Personally not my favourite. I'm not a chocolate brownie person, and it was just too thick and heavy for my liking. It's kinda like fudge with chunks of chocolate In it. Overall, it was wayyy too sweet and heavy for me 5/10 Napoleon: Wow! Napoleon cake has got to be my favourite one. It's got layers of crunch and also a light berry filling. I absolutely love it, definitely a 10/10 Cheesecake: I actually got it by accident LOL but ended up being one of my favourites. It's not too sweet with a nice base to it. It's got a light cheesecake texture instead of the regular thick ones. 10/10 Chocolate fruit cake: Super spongy, i feel like I'm not even eating anything haha i love the whip cream filling in the middle 9/10 Tart: I loved the fruit tart. I did ask for the lighter coloured one but i feel like they'd taste the same haha 9/10 Overall: We got some surprises in the box but i guess it's super busy so it's ok. Extremely disappointed on my last visit to Monastery Bakery. Being from Waterdown though work in Oakville, I always looked forward at least once a month in stopping by MBD for a shop. What would bring there was their potatoe WEDGES/wedge chicken combo that all my co-workers would rave about. On my visit this past Sunday i noticed their wedges didn't look the same. I ask the employee about them and my worst nightmare came true. THEY WERE REPLACED??? WHY? I looked at Monastery's and their wedges the way that some people look at McDonalds and the BIG MAC. Ive shared MBD wedges with local friends and family and they were a hit, always a topic of conversation. Even brought them to functions and parties. My Yelp Friend just couldn't take his eyes off the huge Rum Balls ($1) I wondering if it is the rum (eating rum instead of drinking it?) or the price or the size that attracted him? It was rich, creamy and yes full of rum........... remember don't feed that to your kids!!! Every time I am in this particular area of Oakville, I have to stop at Monastery Bakery!! It is such a large bakery and truly has everything you would want in a bakery! When you walk in, the smell of fresh bread consumes you. They have quite the selection of pastries and cakes. They also have ready made pizza dough for only $1.00. I always buy the dough to make pizza at home and it turns out so fresh and delicious. There is a section of all fresh bread in the back. They even have samples for you to try. The walnut and fig panettone is $5.99 and it's delicious. They sell other flavours too like cranberry orange but I haven't tried them yet! Of course there is a large selection of deli meats as well. One highlight of this bakery is the hot food table!! There is pasta, potatoes, veal parmigiana, lasagna, salads, veggies and more!! They have pre made sandwiches and pizza too. I've had the sandwiches, pizza and pasta and they were all really good! The bakery is located close to a high school and many students go there for lunch so it's always busy Monday to Friday from 11:15-1:15 during that lunch time rush. Pazzo, pazzo, PAZZO! Okay, what can I say 'bout this place that hasn't been written 'bout?? First, the name of this place is deceiving. Expecting to walk into *just* a bakery, it was more like an Italian grocery store, complete with samples, a separate café section, a bakery (selling breads 'n buns) + a cakery (what do you call a display case with cakes, sweets, pastries??), AND a hot table all rolled into 1! Even though it's located in a strip mall, Monastery is pretty expansive. (The parking lot was jam packed!) It's also easy to feel overwhelmed by the various counters, hustle 'n bustle of shoppers on a Saturday afternoon. HOWEVER, for each counter, you do hafta grab a # for service, so it's fairly organised with civilised people - at least while I was there! No pushing/shoving/grumbling/or cursing underneath-breath type behaviour. After all, it's Oakville! Tried: - some kinda triangular-shaped cake with a chocolate outside - good, light, fresh, not overly sweet - cappuccino/latté ($1.69/weekend "special") - both good, enjoyed in-house in their café section where there was seating and it was quieter - veggie sandwich ($4.99) - was toasted, tasted fine, but I wished that I had gotten something with meat in it! - pesto pasta ($4.99) - pasta wasn't overcooked, el dente, but lacked pesto/parm flavour, a bit bland, but it was definitely FRESH! - apple/cinnamon crumble coffee cake ($8.99) - took to a family dinner, delish, nice 'n light, not sugar overload, loads better than the crap at the grocery store Tips: 1. FREE COFFEE @ café counter while you "shop". (I was sorta pissed that I noticed this sign AFTER ordering my latté/cap! :( ) This is AMAZING! Whadda great way to encourage people to shop for longer. 2. Some of the pastries run out quickly! For cannolis/neopolitan, go earlier in the day, esp. on the weekends. 3. If you want to enjoy your hot food, take it to the small seating area in the café. You can also skip the line-ups by paying for your stuff there! Went here for the first time after hearing lots about it. There is a great selection of fresh bread that you can smell from the moment you walk in. It is a very large bakery and takes up almost an entire strip plaza. When I went there, the traffic was crazy. Lots of traffic means good quality, right? There is a hot table to purchase ready made pastas, sandwiches, chicken and ribs. There is also a full delicatessen and pasty are, as well as fresh meat and some produce. More than just a bakery, indeed. I got a rice ball from the hot table that was just average. I also had a cannoli from the pastry table, which was also just average (pastries are sold by weight, so could end up being pricey). I was expecting to be blown away by the tastes, but...not so much. The bread, however, was wonderfully fresh. I am giving 3 stars because the bread really is tasty. Nice bakery, would probably come back for the bread. read more
