It's usually a good sign when you stop in for dinner and the parking lot is full. And it's also usually a good sign for an out of town visitor like myself when when you step inside and see pretty much all locals and few (if any) tourists. The initial signs were all verified as I enjoyed Monroe's classic New Mexican style dinner -- the "Super Combination Platter" consisting of an enchilada, a taco, and a tamale (all topped with my choice of green chili) along with rice, beans, a sopaipilla, and a local craft brew to wash it all down. There is nothing fancy about Monroe's. It looks like a thousand other local family restaurants that I've eaten at over the years. And there is nothing fancy about the food. But for a decent dinner that exudes the essential essence of New Mexican cooking it fills the bill nicely. We made a stop in ABQ on our way back to AZ. Stayed at Embassy Suites. Never been here before, so I didn't know any of their local restaurants. We looked for nearby restaurants on our phone. We found Monroe's and gave it a shot. We had it to go because of the COVID-19. Everyone was friendly on the phone and in person. Food was delicious and they threw in some chips w some gooood salsa. For $8, I got a complete meal, but it was hit and miss. Sopapilla - great stuff here, fluffy and unlimited honey Free Chips and Salsa - Solid again. Salsa was mild and chips were fresh and crunchy. Red and Green - neither had any heat and I didn't sweat, which indicates a problem Chile Relleno- looked pretty and was lightly breaded, but the actual chile was very tough to cut through even with a real steak knife provided. Cheddar Cheese is not an authentic cheese filling either - white cheese is authentic. Waiter said I could have switched to Mozzarella, but Monterey jack should be default filling.
