We chose this restaurant as it was recommended and we were craving Asian towards the end of our NZ…read moretrip. It seems promising as the waiter attending to us was Korean. However, they weren't particularly friendly, and seemed curt at times. But the restaurant is very spacious and great for groups. Banchan in comparison to what I am used to is sorely lacking. The dishes we ordered were not bad, but I have had better versions in other Korean restaurants, even all the way in Lake Tekapo. Another thing I found a bit surprising was this restaurant serving both Japanese and Korean cuisine when the two are quite distinctively different. We did not try any Japanese food though so this review is based solely on the Korean dishes we had.

First off, it seems like a happening place because it's open 24 hours and they allow you to BYO drinks so everyone was walking in with bottles of beer and wine! I noticed that all the wait staff was Korean so perhaps my expectations were a bit high. We ordered the lamb BBQ (since this is something I've never had at a Korean restaurant), the soon tofu soup, and the beef wraps. The lamb BBQ was the best thing we had, it had pretty good flavor. Unfortunately, the soon tofu soup was a disappointment, it was spicy but watery at the same time. Beef wraps were essentially bulgogi wrapped in rice paper. The banchan (side dishes) were a bit lackluster. I was glad to try a Korean restaurant in New Zealand, but unfortunately, my mum's Korean cooking is better. :)

There's a surprisingly large amount of Korean restaurants in Christchurch. After doing some…read moreresearch, we settled on The Station. It's authentic and Korean run. You know it's legit when they have the Korean call buttons on the tables. We dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon (around 2:00pm). Only one other customer was eating. The inside is huge (there's a whole dining area hidden which I assume is for Korean BBQ). This place must have been a French bistro previously; they've kept the decor but added a bit of Korean flare to it.Service is friendly and fast. We saw an older Korean lady (perhaps the family's grandma) in the back cooking. Legit! There's two menus. Lunch menu is only available on weekdays (11:30am to 3:00pm, Tuesday to Friday). There was 9 options to choose from and they were all $12.00 NZD. The dinner menu had a bigger selection including entree, noodles, mains, to share and Korean BBQ. - Bulgogi lunch box ($12.00 NZD) - the lunch box comes with a miso soup, rice, banchan (kimchi, seaweed salad and sweet glazed potatoes) and beef bulgogi with vegetables. The bulgogi was thinly sliced, flavourful and a heaping portion. Sliced cabbage, onion and carrots were also tasty. - Stir fried spicy squid and pork lunch box ($12.00 NZD) - almost exactly the same things except one of the banchan was different (fish cakes instead of seaweed salad). The spicy squid and pork was decently spicy and perfectly cooked. Sauce was addictively good. Would love to come back for their Korean BBQ! Lunch was a steal; completely and utterly satisfied.

Little did I know this would become my last dine-in restaurant meal pre-COVID-19 quarantine!…read moreActually, we did kind of suspect. We were on our way to the airport to go back to the US, which was way further along in its viral progression. Anyway - not a bad final meal! I'm not complaining! Our shared squid/pork bento was cheap but plenty big for both of us, and came with kimchi, fishcakes, and bean sprouts on the side. I thought the kimchi was a little too sauced for my taste, but loved the fishcakes. As for the stirfry, the pork slices were almost like bacon, and the squid, while a little tough, was particularly flavorful. As with everywhere else in NZ, no one blinked an eye or judged us for wanting to take up a table and just split one meal.
