If I could give a no star review I would. As a first-impression, this was by-far THE WORST experience at any groomer we've been to in the past 6 years. AND WE DIDN'T EVEN GET PAST THE SCHEDULING! The customer service at grooming was seriously AWFUL. Let me list the ways... 1. Got our names wrong. Almost got our numbers wrong. 2. Had to reschedule because they didn't log us in the book. 3. Gave us a misleading time for Sunday grooming time to come in. We were sitting out in the rain with our pup at 8AM because they told us the earliest appointment schedule was 9AM. If you look up there they do not open until 10 on Sundays. Seriously awful. I'm sure it's not all bad. They need a better way to schedule their grooming service so they actually have customers. This makes me not trust them alone with my furfamily. Lost some customers, Monster Pets. Thanks for the short-lived experience. read more

Not sure that this is any better than any of your other standard large pet stores like PetSmart and Petco, but I did take advantage of the pet washing station there. It was pretty cool, but just a tip, switching the knob does not change what comes out of the hose. It's not really intuitive, but the shampoo and conditioner and such are actually in bottles on top of the machine and don't come out of the machine despite what the label says on the switch on the machine. That being said they also did not have clean towels on hand and one of the employees kind of gave me an attitude like she hated to do her job when I asked her if there were any clean towels. She kept telling me to use the ones in the dirty bin as long as they were folded, hahaha. Get out of here! read more

BEWARE WHEN BUYING A RABBIT OR ANY OTHER ANIMAL FROM HERE. I recently purchased a rabbit from here and was told at time of purchase she was spayed. First of all it was like pulling teeth to try to get any information on her when getting her. It took two people to find out the sex. I then called a week after getting her to double check if she was spayed. A girl on the phone said "yes, all of the rabbits have been spayed" . Fast forward a month later & my rabbit is now smelling and humping & spraying everywhere so I call AGAIN and this time a man answered & informed me that none of their animals are spayed/neutered. I WOULD HAVE NOT BOUGHT A RABBIT FROM THERE IF IT WASNT SPAYED. I NOW I HAVE TO EITHER PAY 400-500 DOLLARS ON GETTING HER SPAYED OR GIVE HER UP. FUCK THIS PLACE!!!!! read more

I love the fact that they no longer carry puppies here, as I am a stern believer of adoption over purchasing! The boy and I adopted an American Bulldog from the ASPCA about a year ago. He's a great dog, and was severely underweight when we got him. We quickly learned that he has dermatitis which is highly influenced by the food he eats on a daily basis. I have, in the past been the assistant manager in a holistic, boutique pet store in the suburbs, so I'd like to consider myself fairly knowledgeable regarding dietary needs, and composition of a truly stellar pet food. Because of this, we decided upon a grain free whitefish formula for him, which has helped with the bumpy, dry skin, hair loss, etc associated with allergies. They always have our brand in big sizes (our 100+lb boy goes through quite a bit). A small-ish selection of toys/chew treats, but it's not too much to be overwhelming. In regards to the staff, I wish I were able to say that they're amazing. The staff seems quite unenthusiastic, and I'm never offered assistance while browsing the store. I am also never offered assistance to my car, which would be nice with a 50+lb bag of dog food--I can carry about 20lbs..otherwise, I'm pathetic. . I've learned I cannot go for our normal sized bags of food without the boy with me because of that. The people working the registers never seem to be enthusiastic. I guess it's my customer service background, but I would absolutely LOVE to see them have the customer service to back up their store! It would make all the difference in the world. read more

Recently my daughter asked for a fishtank. As fate would have it, I actually had an old one in the basement. Cleaned it up and bought new parts online and few days later we were ready for fish. First batch came from a chain pet store. The selection was as pathetic as the display. We did manage to find 3 of the fish on our fish list. I decided to check out Monster Pets and am I glad I did. I was treated to a wide selection in an environment that feels like an aquarium. The young lady who helped me was extremely pleasant and helpful. I got a little education on a few fish and a couple of great recommendations. I bought 2 fish including one very similar to one from the chain store but at half the price. From what I saw, the prices were extremely reasonable. I can't wait to go back with my daughter and show her what a pet store is supposed to be like. Chain stores and online serves their purpose but for live animals you want the personal touch afforded by a small local business. read more

I came here the day we adopted our puppy to get some essentials. The place is small, but generally had everything we were looking for. I found that their price points were higher than normal and ended up only buying a few things and going to Unleashed by Petco for the rest. I will say that one staff member helped me find everything I was looking for and she gave me good advice. I would come back if I was in the area and needed something (they have great dog food selections), but for the most part I will probably look for some cheaper options when it comes to supplies. read more

Convenient location, but understaffed. The location is great if you shop at Leows, or Target, or Ikea. The store has a reasonable stock. My main problem is that it seems woefully under staffed. This problem is most evident in the fish section, where by definition, you can't get fish without a worker. I must say, when you get someone to help they are very nice. They seemed to have a fine selection of all types of cat health food, and good deals on cat food (Friskies $0.49 a can...THANK YOU). This review is for the self dog washing station inside of the store. We took our pups to a huge off leash dog park that sits on a pond and they went for a swim. It was great, but afterward they were so smelly & muddy that I refused to let them in my house. So on our way home we popped in to give it a try. An employee was standing nearby and gave us the rundown. It's $10 for 10 minutes and we were able to get both of our dogs washed and relatively dry in that time frame. One is 65lbs, one is 45lbs, the bigger one has thick fur that's slow drying. It's nice because you can wash them while standing, and inside the tub are two secured leashes so you can hook their collar to it to keep them from trying to jump out of the tub. Easy on your knees and you can use both hands to really scrub them. This is great and I won't ever wash them at home again! It's been 5 days and they still smell great! The machine accepts debit/credit cards as well. Only downside is there is a section where the knob can be flipped from shampoo/conditioner/dry to cleaning/sanitizing the tub afterward. I'd have happily done that, but didn't realize and wasn't told that you must do this within your 10 minutes. So if you've used all of your time and want to sanitize the tub you have to put in another $10. read more

I've stopped into Monster Pets on several occasions because it's super convenient when I'm making a Target run or happen to be in that general area. A brand ambassador gave me some great advice on some food for my pitty and since Monster didn't carry the brand my dog usually ate, I listened to the nice woman's advice and tried her brand. My dog loved the food, which is why I went back to get some more, especially since there is a buy 10 bags, get 1 free deal. Upon checking out, I asked the cashier if I could have a Monster card, since I anticipated coming back to get this new type of food because nowhere in Center City carries it. The cashier said that they were "out of cards" and I could "get one online." I then asked if I could have my purchase that day count towards the 10 bag deal and she said I'd have to come back and talk to a manager. First of all, I sort of don't buy the whole "out of cards" thing, but I guess it can happen. I actually think the girl didn't know where the cards were and she didn't look like the type who was going to do any more than she had to, so searching for them or asking another employee was out of the question. And to tell me to come back when a manager is working is ridiculous. How do I know the manager's schedule?! Sorry Monster, but I won't be back. Good thing my dog also likes a few other brands of food that I can find closer to home. read more

We found the employees friendly, generous with their time and helpful. The groomer, Lori, was incredibly knowledgeable about all pets and extremely generous with her time. I'd give her 5 stars! The rest of the staff is young but very friendly and eager to help. They have limited supply of pets but get new pets all the time. In the meantime you can pick up a cafe, food, toys and anything else you need to start your new family. read more

Review from a cat owner who has zero regard for dogs, fish, hamsters, jaguars, oysters and other domesticated friends: Living in South Philly, I dont have many choices for pet food. I would love to support Doggy Style more, but they never have the big bags of Before Grain cat food that I like. They offer to order it, but really, I am there because I need cat food now, not 3 days from now. The Monster Pets also has a good selection of cat toys and other cat needs, such as floor cleaners and brushes. They have a great ongoing sale on Fresh Step kitty litter. 2 huge bags for 15 bucks? Oh word! Go to Target and its 10 bucks a bag! (When they have it, that is...) Yes, it is a depressing, sort of generally "bad vibes" pet store. But I can say Pet Smart does genuinely meet my kitty needs. read more

Monster Pets has redeemed itself enough to earn a couple of stars. Boyfriend and I came to pick up fish and decided to get a group of tiger barbs. We don't know a thing about tiger barbs, but the employee who helped us out was not only friendly but also knowledgeable. Everything he told us about their care and diet was the same stuff we found out on a quick Google search. He was careful when handling the fish, which earned points with me after my last experience at Petsmart watching an employee jostle around the fish we were planning to buy. The store also seems cleaner, with a LOT more items in stock than before. They also now sell small animals and birds, in addition to a pretty decent selection of freshwater fish, and the staff seems less miserable. Glad I gave them more chances. read more

After a spur of the moment trip to IKEA, i noticed the Monster Pets store an decided to check it out. I didn't have any intention of buying an animal that day, just wanted to kill some time with an 8 year old, and pet stores are like free zoos. When you enter the store, its pretty big and the enclosures you see immediately to your left with the bunnies and guinea pigs were pretty large. However, when i continued in that direction to where the birds and reptiles were, i found myself very disappointed. The birds were in cages that lacked proper husbandry. There were no toys or enrichment for them, and the perches that had all seemed to be the same size even though the birds were all different sizes. Not to mention the amount of poop in the cages. Next up were the reptiles. I am pretty active in the reptile community and i am well versed in the care for many animals. To begin, they had two smaller ball pythons housed together, that is already an issue because they're supposed to be housed alone when it comes to long term situations. I could see housing them together if the enclosure was a little larger and had proper setups, but this did not. There was one hide between the two of them when it is recommended two hides per one snake. These were both "fancy morphs" and had pretty high prices to go along with them. The albino pastel python was in pretty rough shape. It appeared to have the signs of starting mouth rot, and had a significant amount of stuck shed on the body, not to mention how underweight it was. This type of snake in particular shouldn't be under bright lights constantly because it hurts their eyes. The pastel pied python appeared to be in better shape, but didn't come out of the ball shape during my time there. ***I should note that i talked to the assistant manager, i think his name was Dave. when i explained a few of the issues with the small ball pythons he did seem interested in improving their enclosure, but i am an hour away and can not check in to see if a difference is actually made. The two other ball pythons in the store were larger. I couldn't see one of them because the enclosure was darker and he was in the back. The "XL Ball Python" appeared to be a normal that was just very much power fed by whoever had it before this store, and is severely overweight. Not to mention the improper bedding and no hide available to him. Onto the fish, I have no clue why the fish isle in particular smelled the strongest of dog pee, but you can come to your own conclusions there. They had pretty average run of the mill fish for the most part. The fish weren't in the greatest shape, but Im not completely surprised. However, i was shocked to see that they had quite a few very expensive fish including some clown knifes and a sting ray (?????which are very temperamental and should only be sold to experienced keepers with lots of space???). Also, the betta fish being sold in mason jars and the typical small containers, but this is common practice among lots of pet stores, no surprise there. Still saddens me though. Overall, i can say that the animals here are definitely not taken care of the way they should be, and i wouldn't support this store. I hope they see the issues with their enclosures and animal keeping and work to improve. Not only will this improve the health and quality of the pets sold, but it will make for a more comfortable and confident consumer purchase. read more

Although Monster Pets is so much closer to my house than PetSmart, I'd rather take the longer trip to PetSmart instead. I do not like coming to here unless I absolutely have to. Firstly, their prices are higher for the same things you could find at PetSmart. (although I understand the fact that PetSmart is a larger chain) And they also don't carry as much variety of dog foods or special diet dog foods as PetSmart does. Their customer service isn't that horrible but it isn't great either. One day, I came here browsing for Science Diet brand dog food in the small two aisles of dog food that they have there and a woman that seemed to be the (assistant?) manager was following my friend and I through both isles, twice! (As if I could lug around lbs of stolen dog food outside of the store unnoticed) Not to mention, she didn't even ask us if we needed help finding anything. The Oregon Ave PetSmart wouldn't get 5 stars from me either, but unless they open another PetSmart on my side of South Philly, I'd rather take the longer trip than go to Monster Pets. read more

I went into the South Philly. Overheard a male employee make an inappropriate sexual statement to a female employee. A third employee who turned out to be the manager was next to me and said nothing. When I asked the cashier who the manager was, she described the person who had been standing next to me. I went back, gave the man the items I planned to buy and told him he lost a sale because of his employee. He said nothing. I emailed the customer service email from the Monster Pets website. Not a valid email. So here we are. I would address this with the company, but can't waste my time tracking them down. read more

had bought what they told me was a baby irn bird. i did everything i could to work with this bird (which was never hand tame, i was not told that) and it was the most nasty bird then it stopped eating so i took it back after fighting with the store they kept telling me i have to give the bird more time. mind you, you only have a week to exchange the bird so they finally allowed me to bring it back after not eating. gave me store credit, because they had no other birds to exchange it for. told me to keep calling to see when new birds come in. i have been calling and the staff is being nasty like it's my fault that they don't have birds. now i have a almost 1k store credit for nothing bc i keep getting told they don't have anything available. and what they do have is in the back and not been handled and is scared to death of the staff just changing its food. please don't go here they don't take care of their animals. and i just put out a thousand dollars and have an empty cage sitting here read more

Do not go here. I understand the desire to buy products for your pets here at cheap prices, but it's important to avoid supporting a business that sells puppy mill dogs. Additionally, the other animals here are not treated properly, and the specific needs of exotic pets such as chinchillas and ferrets are not met. As a result, almost any animal you buy here will be suffering from stress and will be unhealthy. Proactively speaking, there are a lot of good reasons to buy elsewhere. For supplies, there are quite a few small businesses in Philadelphia (such as Accents on Animals on South Street) that don't sell animals and have a better healthy variety for your pet. If you're looking for a pet, there are SO many animals that need a home. Petfinder.com can be a great resource if you do your homework, or Morris Animal Refuge. While the puppies at Monster Pets and places like it are very cute, there's a good chance they will suffer health problems later in life from poor breeding practices in mills and bad breeders. read more

I brought my goldendoodle in for a nail clip yesterday. The lady suggested trimming the hair in her face so she could see better. I said okay and let her do her thing considering she is a groomer and should know what she's doing. Unfortunately, she shaved her face to the shortest possible length just short of being bald. She looks awful. She also suggested clipping her nails short enough so that they bleed just to get them shorter faster. read more

BEWARE! Do not shop at this store! I typically shop at Pet Smart but was in the south Philadelphia area on Sunday and needed cat food. This location was near my church. Below are the reasons why I'll never return and why you should not risk it either. 1) The staff, though friendly, are all 16 and remedial. NO one had a clue what product they had in inventory or the location/placement within the store. I was told the brand i was looking for was not there. After spending time looking for a similar brand, I ended up finding the exact item I initially asked for in the back. 2) The store reeks! It smells horrible as if they don't clean it frequently enough. 3) Against my better judgment I still purchased the food items I needed. Well when I got home to open the bag I noticed the top of the bag was taped with thick clear packaging tape! I buy this brand from Petco all the time so i know this tape job was not done by the manufacturer! I cannot believe this store repackaged pet food!! Would you sell repackaged food cereal or yogurt from a grocery store? NO! So why risk the health of an animal by doing this. 4)Since i do not live in Philadelphia, I called the store manager to inform her that there was a problem with the product i purchased and potentially others. However, she would not get on the phone. Repeatedly I told the person who answered that I had no problem waiting on the line for the store manager since it was important. I was told to "call back in an hour or two". Now really irritated, i said, no thanks I'll just call the district manager instead. read more

Would not recommend having your dog groomed here. The whole grooming experience was a nightmare. It all began with my appointment being scheduled at the wrong location although I called the South Philly store. When I arrived to my appointment the groomer was completely booked and after a couple of minutes of an awkward back and forth conversation she agreed to groom my dog. We then discussed on how I wanted the dog groomed and everything seemed good. When I picked up my dog he was completely shaved! Complete opposite of what had been discussed. When expressing my frustration of the whole experience to the manager she told me to calm down although I was not yelling and was just clearly irritated about the situation. read more

I'm a little upset with how overpriced the products are here. The other night, the vet recommended we get Feliway Calming Spray for our cats. Monster had it, but it was $34.99 for a 75 mL can versus a price of $16.97 on Amazon. Now I know that the mere mention of Amazon on Yelp practically makes me the Antichrist, but seriously Monster, why is your price double? I mean, Jesus, are there gold flakes inside or unicorn tears or is it some sort of secret potion or what? How could you possibly mark it up like that? Also, the worker told us to spray the stuff directly on our cats, but after doing some research (ie reading the directions), it clearly states not to use it that way. I'm going to try to look at a few other places around Philly to see if I can get it for a reasonable price, but if I can't, it's gonna have to be Amazon, people. Sigh... read more

My wife and I stopped in for some supplies for our parrot but quickly decided to spend our money elsewhere when we saw the condition the animals were in. About 15 ferrets were squeezed into a small cage that barely gave them room to move. The birds were in tiny enclosures with only dirty water to drink and many looked sick. Don't shop here. I can never get anyone to help me. The staff knows absolutely nothing about animals. You would think that the staff would be trained on the products they carry but no, of course not. The store is dirty too. Not filthy but dirty enough that I won't even bring my dog in with me because I'm afraid she's going to get fleas or something. I really only come here for fish and dog food. Im an experienced cichlid enthusiast and i have been very pleased with their selection. I have seen some some great deals on cichlids occasionally and i have never had any problems with their feeder guppies or ghost shrimp. Dry goods are a little over priced but occasionally they do have some great deals on tanks and filters. Also check out the Monster Pets in jersey, its a lot larger/ newer looking with a larger amount of tanks. read more

This place always, and I mean always, has an ample supply of cat litter on hand. For this reason alone, I shop there! And, it is very close to home. Yes... it is filled with young workers who are making minimum wage -- who may not be all that willing to help you find what you need... but, so is PetCo and Pet Smart ... I manage my expectations, get what I need, and check out. The $25 coupon deal is awesome, too. My only real issue is the shopping carts! They don't steer well; none of them. If I could have one wish, it would be for them to get new carts!! They don't peddle animals anymore, or I would not frequent this place... I guess that was something they did before. Not sure ... I can only speak to what i have seen. Overall, the proximity and stock availability keep me coming back. On a side note-- they did have a "Bring Louie Home" flyer at the counter this weekend -- this shows support for the community. Used to be a loyal customer purchasing all my cat's food, litter and toys here. I came back from a trip away and needed litter stat. I was across the street from Monster Pets and called at 8:57 to apologetically announce I'd be there in one minute- 8:58, needing just 1 quick thing. The clerk said she would have to ask her manager if she could help me then returned to the call as I was pulling in the lot at 8:58 to say her manager said No. People in the service industry have tough jobs and it's unfair when people walk in at the last minute but this quick indifference and disregard left a poor taste in my mouth. This is a store all about fostering healthy and happy relationships between man and animal. The service there does not reflect those values. I went down the street to Target and bought the litter with convenience and a smile. Too bad. Another local store loses out to the big box. read more

As a cat owner, I love Monster Pets' selection of food, treats, toys, litter, and other cat amenities. They are generally a bit more expensive than huge chains like Petco or PetSmart, but they're a quality local business with which I've never had a problem; sometimes they even have items that the other stores don't have. If you play your cards right, you can catch a pretty good sale on certain food items; I've . Plus, they've got adorable cats and dogs in the back that are just a joy to play with. The employees have never really gone out of their way to help me, which I don't mind; they're certainly not rude. Being next to the liquor store draws me in, too. read more

I can only provide a review for their DIY dog wash which is spectacular! The dog wash has shampoo, flea shampoo, conditioner all loaded into the machine for you - no need to bring your own supplies. There is a blow-dry option with the machine which is great and there is usually always an extra towel. read more

The feeder fish I bought for my turtle had ich (a common fish fungus that is treatable but annoying.) I would be wary about purchasing fish here if you're worried about infecting your other fish. They do have a decent selection of fish products like heaters, filters and food. It's so hard to find a good store for aquarists around here! read more
