We popped in after a show in the area. It was our first time trying a vegan restaurant, so our expectations were nonexistent. This place is beautifully decorated. The vibe is horror movie chic, if ya know what I mean. We were greeted and seated promptly and immediately checked out the menu to see what we should try. We asked for the macaroni balls as an app, but they were sold out. A few minutes later, we were told we could order them bc the chef had made a new batch. Yay!! So, we started with the Mac balls and seitan Korean wings. Our apps arrived and I must admit. I enjoyed the seitan wings more than I did the Mac balls. The Korean BBQ (seitan) wings had an amazing sauce that truly made me forget I was at a vegan restaurant. They were crispy, savory, and just delicious. I decided to go with the gyro and my partner went with the cheese steak for his entree. My gyro was yummy! The impossible beef, lettuce and tomato were reminiscent of a regular gyro. I used to order from here pretty often and always loved the food, especially the Parmesan fries. Decided to try the vegan French dip and have mixed feelings. The French Dip menu description (and photo) lists it as coming with au jus, horseradish aioli on the side, The pressed /panini sandwich I would think it should melt some of the 3 slices of cheese just sitting alongside the tasty roll. Unfortunately, my order didn't match ingredients & pics. There was no au jus or aioli included, and the sandwich itself wasn't pressed--the cheese was thick and unmelted, which really changed the overall experience. Easily one of the best places I went to in Philly. I had one goal to eat and find a vegan cheesesteak and monster vegan was at the top of the list. I'm a huge horror movie fan so having that plus vegan food was an instant win. The inside is so retro and plays older horror movies while the bar is neon pink and fabulous! Twas good for an all vegan feast. We got a baby lasagna, the suspiria birria, and Stuart Gordon. Baby lasagna was fire and my favorite bite of the night. My first time having lasagna! The ricotta was thick and tomato sauce was seasoned well. The suspiria birria def needed the consommé with it. Consommé was giving Thanksgiving gravy lowkey. don't know if I would consider this a cheesesteak though. Tbh I forgot that it was supposed to be a cheesesteak until now as im writing this. Frequently get takeout from here and always enjoyed the food!! Usually get the vegan Korean wings but decided to try the pesto pistachio bucatini and it did not disappoint!! Visited in person during lunch on a Friday afternoon. Although it wasn't crowded it took a couple of minutes to get seated. Once seated my waitress was very attentive and helpful. Monster Vegan is a must-visit if you love themed restaurants and great food. I'm a huge fan of classic monster movies, so the atmosphere immediately hooked me. A lot of themed spots lean hard into aesthetics but fall short on food. That was not the case here at all. I ordered the double smashed burger with fries and it was excellent. The burger was flavorful and satisfying, and the onion rings inside the sandwich were a great touch that really brought it together. My wife ordered the vegan cheesesteak with Impossible meat. She didn't finish it, which worked out perfectly for me because I got to enjoy the other half. The peppers added a nice kick and the sandwich was just as good as the burger. What really made this visit special was the kindness of the staff. We asked if the kitchen could blend our daughter's soup (chicken de jour), and they were incredibly understanding and accommodating. That willingness to go above and beyond meant a lot to us and did not go unnoticed. This was my 3rd visit to the restaurant and I have yet to be disappointed. Our first time here but definitely will not be our last! I don't know where to start! I'll start with our server Nat (she deserves a raise!) She was so friendly and willing to share her recommendations (it seems like she recommended everything!). We had the Rod Serling "chicken" sandwich and the French dip which came with Parmesan truffle fries. If I didn't know it was vegan I would have totally thought it was actual cheese. Both the sauces were creamy and light which had no contrast. - fried mac and cheese balls (6/10): two big macaroni and cheese balls on a bed of marinara sauce. This is an accurate representation of the comfort feel of the menu. The balls are large and can easily be split between a few people. Texturally, i liked the contrast between the crispy exterior and the al dente pasta. I would have liked more flavor and creaminess from the cheese. The marinara also lacked flavor besides tomato. - calamari masala (8/10): fried oyster mushrooms with a side of tikka masala sauce. This was my favorite of the dishes we ordered. The mushrooms are crispy with a meaty interior that is the ideal size for picking up and dipping. The sauce was the highlight. It is creamy yet spicy with some acidity from the lemon and tomato. I would order this just for the sauce. - crispy parmesan asparagus (7/10): four asparagus sprigs coated in panko breadcrumbs and topped with pesto and ricotta with a side of arugula salad. This was a substantial portion for either a main or to share as an appetizer. I appreciated the amount of arugula in the salad as a refreshment for the fried foods. The salad was generously dressed with olive oil yet the leaves retained crispness. I enjoyed the asparagus as well especially with the herby pesto and creamy ricotta. The only thing that i would have changed was giving more tender asparagus stalks as some of the ends were too tough to eat. - fried eggplant bucatini (8/10): bucatini in a vodka sauce topped with ricotta, arugula, and two slices of fried eggplant. This dish was served piping hot which made it very enjoyable. The sauce is creamy yet fresh and the pasta is cooked al dente. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes! Ordered via DoorDash so I didn't get to experience the cool vibes/fun decor of this spot, but the food was incredible! Traveling with my non vegan family so I ordered a vegan cheesesteak while they ate the real thing. WOW was it good! I opted for the Impossible meat option over seitan and vegan ribeye (although I am interested in that ribeye!) I added the fries which were excellent- crispy and topped with really good Parmesan and served with a horseradish sauce. I also added a caeser salad which was pretty great, and Oreo beignets which were interesting and enjoyable. I didn't know what to expect with the beignets, and almost didn't order them, but I am glad I did. They were so delicious they didn't even need the dipping sauce. Ok so this place has an all vegan menu, but the mock-meat tastes just like real meat and it really weirded me out. I got the Ruben, and I tried to eat it, but I really couldn't. I think this place is best suited for meat eaters who want to eat healthier/have a vegan experience, or people who somewhat recently gave up meat and still want that experience. The entire menu is vegan/veg and so the multitude of options made selecting a dish tricky... but I decided on the General Tso's hoagie. What feels like a million years ago, this used to be Valanni restaurant and bar. The inside is still the same but the vibes are way better now. The bar has a year round 'monster' / spooky season vibe and I'm here for it. Plus everything is vegan and SO tasty. Even most non-vegans won't be able to tell. I had really high expectations for Monster Vegan - the menu online looked so delicious and different, and everything was vegetarian (because it was all vegan!). Came here for a late dinner one Saturday evening. Service was pretty quick. The sandwich was tough and chewy and the bread was hard to eat. We did not like this at all. The pasta was pretty good but had a weird taste to it, maybe from the kale or fake bacon. The wings were okay - chewy as they should be but a little too sticky and hard to swallow. The mac & cheese balls were actually very good! I would order these again. Overall, not sure if I would recommend Monster Vegan. What an awesome place! We went here for a double date during restaurant week. I love nothing more than sipping my liquid death tall boy out of a straw. Of course they would have liquid death! Horror movies play. A creepy soundtrack for your dinner. Rob Zombie would love this place. I got the ricotta, meatball, deep fried Oreo and general Tso chicken sandwich. The ricotta was perfectly fluffy and the bread was perfectly toasted. Pear with a glaze was such a nice touch. Everyone else got the crab bisque. I tried a spoonful and it tasted delicious. Still glad I chose what I chose though. The deep fried Oreo was on top of this soft serve ice cream that was like a Dairy Queen soft serve but with less air and more body. Saw this place on TikTok and had to check it out. Walked in on a Friday around 5pm and it was decently busy but was able to be seated right away. I love the interior design of this place - the pink neon signs, all the horror movie masks and the comfy booths made the atmosphere spooky but chic. To our surprise it was happy hour!! We enjoyed the pretzels off that menu and a Zombie Beach Party which came in a cute skull glass. At first I thought the drink was too sweet and not enough liquor but by the end of my glass felt a nice buzz. We ended up splitting the argento sandwich but there was quite a few things on the menu that I was interested in trying. Food was delicious! My personal favorite was their fried mushroom calamari! Presentation of all our dishes was more than acceptable. Love the vibe of the restaurant too. It's modern and the "Monster-theme" and neon lights made it both whimsical and playful without being cheesy. I wouldn't consider their dishes necessarily healthy (lots of salt and deep fried-goodness), but what I really appreciate is how creative they are with vegan dishes--incorporating opposing textures (soft/crunchy or soft & chewy/crunchy) to achieve the perfect combination of texture and flavor profiles. Dig through the ditches and burn through the witches and stay with my Dragula-Rob Zombie I went to Monster Vegan during a recent trip to Philly. Getting a vegan version of the iconic Philly Cheesesteak was a must & did just that ordering a cheesesteak with shaved seitan, housemade vegan cheese whiz, and fried onions on a baguette. I added lettuce, tomato, and garlic aioli for $1.50. All in all it was quite decent. Longtime vegan Rob Zombie would love it here. Black and white horror films showed on the tele along with heaps of Monster memorabilia including the Werewolf, Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and many more. Tattooed staff was friendly and provided efficient service. It had a hipster vibe. I found it to be junk food vegan so if that is your thing and you love monster memorabilia come here. Pro tip: Check out certain nights where they show full monster films. Room for improvement: I would bump it to four or five stars if there were more tasty/healthy vegetable options on the menu. I am vegan now 25 years before plant based eating was hip and trendy. I am glad that the movement is becoming more popular and it is here to stay. Add some vegetable forward dishes on the menu that are healthy and would be coming back here sooner than later next time I am in Philly. read more
