It's not a bunch of machines with "how to" labels on them... it's free weights, squat racks, some benches, some machines upstairs... it definitely has a grit vibe... so if that's what you're looking for it may be a great fit for you! I just got an email today that Zach (who was working regularly when I was there) is the new owner and I really liked him... I think he'll do some good things for the place! There are no clear signs indicating where to park and there are a ton of potholes near the gym. Second, the lobby area is neat and clean. They have a cafe that is open to anyone, and you do not have to be a member to grab a coffee. They also have cool freebies like "Better Earned" stickers and rubber bracelets. I am actually wearing one as I type this, and it serves as a nice reminder of what I'm working towards.

I am so glad they open up this gym to community members and the one big perk of signing up as a community member is that you get preferred parking. For $5 a month, you get to park in the parking garage beneath the gym, which is crazy convenient for Charleston. The work out rooms, pool, locker room, and other facilities are kept very clean and in good condition. The staff is friendly and eager to answer any questions you have. Even though there are a lot of people that attend this gym, the space is well organized and therefore it doesn't get too crowded. You have full access to the group exercise classes they offer and they offer a wide variety of them. I only have 2 minor issues with the wellness center. The first is that there are not a lot of weights to go around in the free weight room. If there are people using every bench, for example, you usually have to share weights with someone or wait for them to finish. My second issue is that some of the machines are very old. There are a few machines sprinkled in to the facility that don't work properly and are very outdated, which is strange because the rest of the facility looks brand new. Those small issues aside, if you're looking for a new gym, this is the place to go!

The space and equipment dedicated to each discipline show just how much they care about every individual who walks through the door. You'll find unique machines here you won't see in most gyms, like the Nautilus seated pullover and the Pendulum squat. They've got every barbell imaginable, including the Kabuki Transformer bar. Two saunas, showers, vending machines, world-class coaches, a cardio area, and even an outdoor fitness space--it's all here. If there's one thing someone might not love, it's that this isn't your typical commercial gym--no chrome machines or top-40 playlists. It's a serious training space, and that intensity isn't for everyone. But if you're looking for real progress and a community that supports it, this place stands apart.

Here's why: 1) Equipment: pretty good selection actually. Lots of free weight options, including barbells, a squat rack, benches, a deadlift area with bumper plates, dumbbells up to 100lbs; plus many machines, including cable machines, and quite a few cardio options. The high point of this gym is definitely the variety of training options. 2) Ambiance: needs work. The whole gym is dark and a bit dingy; the bathrooms are filthy (well, at least the men's was), there's water and who knows what else on the floor and many lockers were broken; equipment is in general disarray, and some machines don't function exactly right. All in all, this gym needs a tune-up! 3) Convenience: 24 hours, close to many downtown hotels, some parking out front. All in all, an ok gym, but definitely needs some TLC!

The instructors and workers learn your name and fitness goals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the gym was open as much as it could be, safely. Masks were required when the city mask mandate was in effect, and group fitness classes were spaced out and limited, with online reservations. The good thing about a 24 hour gym membership is that you can go when it's less crowded and weird hours of the day. My husband and I were both able to keep up our fitness routines this way. Now, the gym is back to fully capacity and offers group fitness classes again. There's also a new turf and sled as well as a new glute machine and additional free weights, all added within the last year. All equipment is in great shape, and I've never seen a machine out of order. The cardio machines have personal viewing screens, so you can watch Netflix on the elliptical or treadmill. No matter what your fitness level is, you'll fit in at Zoo Health Club. Whether you like classes, personal training, or work out on your own, you can meet your goals here.

They are encouraging and push you through the works outs. I attend the hot yoga classes such as burn and pulse. Sometimes, they will offer special, longer classes like stretching which I appreciate and try to attend. The yoga classes (LO classes) are all heated. They last 45 minutes and have classes throughout the week in the mornings and evenings. They provide props, sanitizer wipes and spray, and lavender towels after workouts for use.
