We had a nice visit to the Capitol. They are doing construction on the outside of the building but still easy to get to parking that was close to the entrance. There is an information desk in the lobby and security. No need to check in or show ID. The lobby and mezzanine are open to the public. There are bathrooms on the first floor that have decor from the 40's. Very clean, well maintained building. There is also a post office on the first floor. The grounds on the outside were also very pretty and well maintained. We only stayed about 30 minutes, including buying a post card stamp so no need for a long visit. You can wander the halls and look into the senate, house and Supreme Court chambers. It was worth a visit. read more

The Montana State Capitol building is lovely as most of these very old buildings are. The architecture is standard and it looks stately from the outside. The grounds are fairly well manicured and look okay as well. What I did not appreciate was the ten commandments slab at a government building. I was here for a historic tour of the town but I know enough about the founding of this country to know about separation of church and state. How disappointing. The inside of the building was also well built and very old. Unfortunately, when you approach the state police stationed at the information desk, it only takes a moment to realize why they may have been put there. I'll give you a hint, it is not their wealth of knowledge or sunny disposition. Parking is very difficult as almost everything is permit parking and street parking fills up quickly. There was also no security at all from what I could see, with the exception of the aforementioned misanthropes sipping their coffee at the information desk. As state capitals go, I believe there is plenty of room for improvement here. read more

Visiting the Montana State Capitol as a tourist is free. You can get a stamp here for the state capitols (this is a program that has a stamp at each state's capitol with the date and state name and a small image.) Either bring your own paper to stamp or stamp your brochure because they don't keep scrap paper around. Parking is a bit of a hassle as nearly everything is permit parking only. I don't even remember going through any sort of security to get into the building, which is a bit wild compared to any of the other capitols I've been to. I went two weeks ago (May 2023) and there were no guided tours or docents on hand. You're also not allowed to go into any of the legislative rooms despite them not being in session currently. Overall, it was a bit meh as a self-guided "wander around and bounce" type tour. read more

When exploring a new city or town one good thing is to check out the state capitol and I just wanted to walk around. The first floor rotunda architecture and design are beautiful. Also on the first floor is the office of the governor's different departments. There's also a hallway that shows famous Montanans, the work they've done, and what they've contributed while still maintaining the qualities of a Montanan. On the third floor there are the Old Supreme Court chamber, the Senate chamber, and the House chamber. There are also galleries on the floor above to watch over the chambers. The day I visited I actually stumbled upon the award ceremony for the trooper who rescued four people from a helicopter crash which was so cool to see! A beautiful state capital building in the charming town of Helena, the capital of Montana! Came in the morning and it was extremely quiet and scarce. I saw maybe a handful of people working and one other group touring the building. I saw no security whatsoever, but I guess that's expected in a small town in Montana. The capital is quite big compared to others I have toured. The building is filled with history and everything lends a hand to what Montana is all about. You know the architecture is something when I have to mention the restrooms. They are stunning! The building is well kept and the outside grounds are beautiful. If you're into touring capitals, Montana has a great one. read more

Continuing my collection of State Capitols, we stopped by Helena Montana and added number 25. This is a massive installation. It looks to be as big as Denver and certainly bigger than Cheyenne. Completed in 1902, the building is made of Montana sandstone and granite. Lady Liberty is atop the copper-covered dome. There is plenty of free parking nearby, there are lots of statues on the grounds to see and certainly admire the ingenuity of building this massive structure here in Montana over one hundred years ago. read more

The first thing that struck me about the Montana State Capitol building in Helena, MT is that it isn't very big. You can walk around it in 5 minutes. It's a gorgeous, neo-classical building that was completed in 1902 and designed by Iowa architects Charles Bell and John Kent. Note the "Montana" figure on top of the rotunda that looks out over the Helena valley. It's definitely a must-see if you're in the area. You can enter the building during business hours. read more

This is a great place to visit if you like History. Especially history the talks about all the great things that have happened in our state. In my opinion they don't put enough in here about Indian history though. Definitely worth the visit when the legislature is in session. It's best to go in the mornings when it's quiet. Megan the capital guard there is friendly and when it's not busy she'll answer any questions you have. Definitely worth the stop. read more

Convinced a couple of girls that Gov. Schweitzer gave my buddy a complete pardon for a driving infraction just by walking into his office and begging for clemency. That may not have happened, but you can easily walk right into the Governor's office. There's no security whatsoever. Still, while the building was about the same size as my local county courthouse, it was way more beautiful. Loved being able to just walk around and check everything out. The Senate chambers and the Old Supreme Court were both pretty sweet. I recommend going here if you find yourself in Helena with an hour to kill. read more

Well it is home to Montana's state legislature, so know that going in and don't expect results even though the building is quite beautiful. We learned they were supposed to start working on a jobs and infrastructure bill the first week but apparently they are just sitting around "waiting"and you don't get the impression that they really care that much about doing the job they were sent here to do. A lot of time appears to be spent on selling off the state parks and other doomsday prepper variety laws. Is this even a thing? I must admit I don't get it. If you are looking for a place fairly packed with loons, without much expertise on what they are voting on who don't appear to even be reading the legislation, this might be good for a pop-in but maybe skip it if you were hoping someone would listen to you. On the upside, there is no karaoke. It's pretty clear that millions of dollars have been spent by people who haven't much bothered to research what's in their own bills, walking around drinking their government supplied coffee and acting important. read more

Yannakers? What's that? Well, this is the state capitol building. It's worth taking a tour, which goes on free of charge just about once an hour. I got to see the old Supreme Court room, senate and house rooms, and a brief history of Montana as told by the many murals peppered throughout the building. If it weren't for the tour, I might have just walked right into the governor's office, too! You can also park right up at the front (or maybe it was the back) of the building, they have a few one hour parking spaces. Quite different from other states where you can't drive your car anywhere close to the capitol building anymore! read more
