His teachers believe in him and are so patient, they recognize his strengths and that has given him so much confidence. As an educator myself, I find it very wrong, especially when one is paying a lot of money in tuition. Furthermore, in our experience, the first-grade teacher used ancient methodology and pedagogy. I consider them part of our family and value their role in my children's lives. Every single teacher in the center knows and interacts with my children lovingly and as if they were their own. Management and teachers have always been professional, responsive, and considerate. Procare is used to provide updates and photos on their daily activities, and funny stories/info on their days are also shared during pick-up/drop-off, always keeping me - and even Grammy - involved. Communication lines are always open and parent-teacher conferences are offered regularly. Activities indoors and outdoors are plentiful, allowing my kids to burn their massive amounts of energy. Meals are kid-friendly while meeting and exceeding State standards for healthy meal plans. Any concerns are resolved promptly. I've never had to question the safety - physical, emotional, or otherwise - of my children while in their care, and any incidents between children are well-documented and handled appropriately. The facility is clean and maintained, providing a sanitary environment. Teachers are trained regularly, and turnover is infrequent (all but maybe two have been with the center for 1y+). In the time my kids have attended, we've seen many wonderful updates, from the installation of security cameras and complete remodels of rooms to new playground equipment and strollers for walks. In short, my kids are happy, well-taken care of, and the dedication and commitment of management and teachers to each other, to the children, and to the facility is clear to see. They once tried to convince me she had chicken pox (site definitely didn't) just so they could have one less kid to supervise. She was only 1! In one month, they called me 8 times to come get her. And I finally asked the owner how they got paid and whether the child is there for 1 hour or 8 hours, they charge for the full day, so the staff was getting their full pay and then just sending kids home! It was AWFUL.

We like Judge the best of local HS options. We think the school is solid in some areas, yet worry…read morethat it veers into style-over-substance elsewhere. We see room for reflection and continuous improvement. At an authentically Catholic school, Catholic beliefs and doctrines, as well as Catholic prayer and worship, comprise the cornerstone of mission and identity. Judge is Catholic-lite. Only 50-60% of the student body is of the flock, most of whom are cafeteria Catholics. Each year a swath of students matriculate from non-Catholic middle schools, including McGillis (identitarian and politically left) and Carden (informally LDS). There's lots of secularism. Judge is not going to make the Cardinal Newman Honor Roll. (More traditional families within the diocese, feeling marginalized, have broken off to open a Chesterton Academy.) Our family esteems fostering an expansive worldview. We don't believe this gets accomplished by creating colorful flyers or curating photo ops to pat oneself on the back for appearing woke. We worry that the school gets so preoccupied with the buzz immediacy of virtue signaling that other facets of mission that steward school success become obscured and neglected. Judge eagerly advertises that it is "diverse and inclusive" on every marketing material it produces. Meanwhile, the school remains comparatively quiet about a legacy of academic excellence, opportunities for discovery and exploration of subject matter, helping students develop effective tools of critical inquiry, instilling habits of mind that position pupils on a path of life-long learning, threads of spiritual life, mature behavior, or intellectual honesty. We would like to see Judge redouble efforts to incorporate the latest research findings into a carefully calibrated sequence of classes, programs, and activities. We'd like to see students read Plato, Aristotle, St. Thomas of Aquinas, sharpen their logic and rhetoric, and understand seminal developments in Western civilizations as a wellspring of modern human progress. We'd like a laser focus on the best opportunities in math and science. Judge excels at making students individually known, seen, acknowledged. No one is left to wilting anonymity. This is a strength of the school. That said, there is hand-holding. Sometimes too much, particularly with certain families. We wholeheartedly wish admissions policies were more stringent. As Judge endeavors to get a firm handle on issues that have plagued the school for years (drugs, declining enrollment), more and more talented 8th graders from the top 2 Catholic schools are rerouting to West and Skyline. Judge could do so much to mitigate this by checking certain problems before they ever enter the door! Judge has a solid population of high flyers but we are blown away by how unambitious a chunk of the student body is. Why in the world would parents pay over $10K/year for HS in order to have their student go on to Salt Lake Community College? This gobstopping scenario is not as uncommon as one might imagine. We'd like less emphasis on football and don't think any HS sport needs to hold conditioning earlier than 7:00 a.m. Just not healthy for teens. The physical space of Judge is a ticking time bomb--dated, financially insolvent to fix, not enough acreage. The diocese aspires to sell the property and embark on a new campus at St. Ann's. If this project is moving forward (hopefully it is but a bit shrouded in mystery), it's doing so at a snail's pace. The diocese regards teaching as a vocation and pays teachers hideously low wages. It is so egregious that as of 2016 they longer publish their educator salary schedule in the public domain. Diocesean schools rely on hiring unlicensed. No one is National Board Certified. Judge can't offer an IB program. In spite of this, there are tremendous educators on the faculty. As these stalwarts gray, the school needs to have a plan to hire and retain quality replacements. Ultimately Judge does offer a debonair social network. Akin to a giant fraternity/sorority. Families remain connected to Judge for across generations. The more wealth and generosity you bring to the table, the more access and leeway you receive in return.

My Eldest child is on the Autism Spectrum, and Miss Jolynne made it possible for me to mainstream my daughter in pre-school. Every day, I wish that Miss Jolynne were a teacher in the public school system! Of all the grade-school teachers my daughter has had, Miss Jolynne has been the one that has best cared for my special-needs child. There was a lot of genlte-encouragement, on Miss Jolynne's part. And at the end of two years, Miss Jolynne had prepared my daughter to enter Kindergarten. My middle child is finishing up her second year at Start Smart Preschool. Middle child is pretty typical, and she has done very well at Start Smart too. I feel like she's ahead of the game, thanks to the tactics Miss Jolynne emlploys. Miss Jolynne uses a lot of repetition to help the kids learn the alphabet, and the corresponding sounds that each letter makes. There are different "Units" that are focused on each month, like: number units, color units, weather units, and so on... The age-appropriate academia is perfectly balanced with Social/"Fun" time too. The kids get free-play. And Miss Jolynne plans excellent field trips. Also, the kids participate in Pre-school programs, twice a year! Another "edge" that Start Smart Preschool has over other, local, preschools is that it is 2.5 hours long; as opposed to the usual 2 hours. The 3-year-old class meets Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 12:15PM-2:45PM. And the 4 year old class meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 9AM-11:30AM. I think that having preschool consecutive days is genius! It helps the kids get used to going going to school several days in a row. I haven't found another preschool that better preps children to enter Kindergarten, than Smart Start does. Start Smart Preschool's enrollment period starts at the beginning of January, for the following academic year. And believe me, this preschool is "in demand" so, get your precious little-one signed up as soon as registration opens up.

She also incorporates mindfulness which we love. We hope to attend a few weeks next summer. Only wish it wasn't a bit of a drive for us, otherwise we would love to attend all year.

With that huge gorgeous garden, the healthy meals (delicious and home-cooked!), the big library, the wonderful preschool curriculum and even more wonderful teachers - well, we consider ourselves so lucky to have found it. The staff there is genuinely loving and skilled, and even after our older girl moved into kindergarten, she considers Little Rascals a home, and the teachers all family. She and her younger brother are very different, but each found in Little Rascals a comfortable place to play, explore, try out new things, read, eat well, have fun, and get great at being with other kids. (They've also learned how to clean up their toys incredibly quickly! Thanks for that!) Shelley and her team are professional, kind, generous, understanding of the challenges we working parents can have, and thoughtful above all. Even after our girl moved up to kindergarten, they saved a spot for her next to her younger brother at the yearly Christmas party - making sure Santa knew to bring her a gift too. Now our younger son is starting kindergarten soon, and I simply can't believe the time is coming when we won't see Little Rascals every day. We owe everything to them, and will always be so grateful to them for loving our kids as much as we do!!
