(Montgomery College Rockville Part 1 of 2) 10/16/19. Montgomery College in Rockville Maryland. My old stomping ground and where I found a major I really liked. A major I never aquire, because I got burned out. I tried two different to continue my education ang graduate from college, but I guess as of now...2019...its not likely to happen. Let's take a step back and I will tell you what happened with me over the years at Montgomery College. In 1996-1997 I was attending Marshall University. Yeah, the same University where the movie We Are Marshall was filmed. I had come to Montgomery College to repair my grade point average. At Marshall the College life had gotten good, but I wasn't prefirming well in all of my classes. History is just one example. The teacher...no...professor, had her whole class sign in using one's social security number as way of attendance. I put my name down instead of my social security number. What the hell kind of system is that? Off topic for a moment. I once applied to work at a Fed Ex in Rockville. It was a group interview and at the end of the group interview they had people put their social security number down on paper. The paper was passed all the way down to me. I put my name down and passed it on. A few others followed my lead. Needless to say, we weren't hired, had a list of social security numbers in my head,....but I digress. I saw every student get 20 to 30 pages of reading every night. If you fell behind you were shit out of luck. The game of catch up was a very popular game in her class. I did what I could, but failed and ended up dropping her class. I ended up dropping a four hour algebra class that met twice a week too. Needless to say, I need my GPA at a higher level and once I enrolled in Montgomery College, I kicked some major ass. I had a new game plan and I liked the size of these college. The campus was pretty much all in one place without having to travel long distances to get to classes. Upon regestiering, I saw the line seemed pretty long, but it moved fairly quickly. It was then I notice a sign with a picture on the wall. The sign said "And you think you have it bad." The picture showed lines of students out of the building going all the way towards the security office and beyond. Now adays there should be a line since online enrollment is the new way to do things. Paying for books was expensive and the return of unwanted books was highway robbery. This is the way colleges are and this is not going to change. Now if you didn't know, there are three Montgomery Colleges. In no particular order, Rockville Montgomery College, Germantown and Takoma/Silver Spring campuses. Since I now lived in the Rockville area, I sometimes walked, drove or took the bus depending on my mood. This is a day/night campus, but you didn't live on campus like other colleges do. During the Spring semester of 97, I took several classes to help get my grade point average up. By the end of it all, there I got ready to take a test where if you don't pass, you don't pass the class. I believe they called it the competency exam. I had A's in the class, but failed the test. I appealed their fail grade, but lost. I was bummed out, but knew I could pass on the next try. I was taking classes that were beyond the normal, but it helped me out a great deal later on. Yeah, once I got over taking English 001 and 002 I learned a great deal and more importantly, had fun. Between classes after finishing homework, I stumbled upon an arcade inside the Student Center. I don't know if the students center still has this arcade and pool, but it was a way to unwind. I believe there was a small copy center there too...I may be have been something else though. I noticed the last time I was in Maryland, Montgomery College has been broadcasting the school's mascot. A large Raven and the Color of Montgomery seems to be my favorite color purple. When I went to this school, I never saw much of the mascot or the new colored clothing. Guess not enough merchandise is being sold and Montgomery College is trying to change that with better clothes. I will check this out for myself next week. Correction, the mascot for Montgomery College Rockville, the mascot is a Raptor not a Raven...I was corrected when I saw a picture of the mascot sign. *I'm running out of writing room, do I will write more later.....to be continued." read more

The Rockville Campus of Montgomery College is currently undergoing construction with upgrades to be expected over the next year or two. This is one of three Montgomery College campuses and is the one I've personally spent the most time taking classes over my tenure, which has been far from linear. There is parking that surrounds the circular campus, mostly lots, but there is a garage as well. The facilities are fairly nice and it's my preferred campus with Germantown taking a close second. There are busses that run through the campus all day and into the evening. read more

Best community college in the country! Class sizes are small and so many awesome professors. Lots of scholarships available but cost is reasonable too. Tons of free performances, galleries, guest speakers and sporting events. read more

I've been taking art classes for fun at MoCo for about 4 years now. I am not degree seeking-- I just like to do art. I've taken ceramics and crafts at the Silver Spring/Takoma Park campus and the instructors and staff and other students are super. (I've liked the ceramics classes so much I have taken them for about four years now. And, I've learned so much I decided to get my own kiln and work on my own-- but I still plan to take more classes because it is fun and affordable.) I also took a jewelry and metalsmithing class at the Rockville campus. The experience was not as good as SS/TP, partly because I live in SS so the commute was not great, partly because the course was not what I expected, but it was a super facility and everyone was nice. Overall I would say that we are lucky to have such a wonderful resource available to us in the county. I plan to take a lot more classes. read more

5 stars for the professors !! Thank you all.. But the school isn't up to par, it's a little old not like Northern Va community college Springfield or Alexandria campus but they are rebuilding a few things. The science center is brand new & is very nice. read more

Under no circumstances would I recommend this school to anyone. The president DeRionne Pollard of this school has folks like Zeporia Smith with master's degrees and higher advising my daughter wrong information for the past "3" years. From mistaken majors to taking classes that were not necessary. It's a darn shame that my daughter has to suffer from anxiety and deal with the emails that state bad news all because of the inconsiderate staff that don't have the common sense to figure out what the hell is wrong with her schedule. This has to be made known. My daughter has been trying to graduate and yet, this school has made mistakes after mistakes. I'm in disbelief that I have to see my daughter suffer because of the mistakes of high educated people. read more

I registered for classes in advance and I picked professors that had great ratings using rate my professor. I just checked online and one of my professors was switched. I was not alerted or emailed about my professor changing. I am upset because I choose classes based on the professors. I find this really unfair and unprofessional. read more

2 handicap parking spaces in the entire parking garage-- AND on the 2d floor doesn't work out well for those of us with mobility issues. The other construction towards the back of the campus eliminated several handicap parking spaces. This administration also eliminated many handicap spaces near the gym at the Germantown MD campus. Since you are bent on elimination of the spaces, some strategically placed benches for those of us with mobility issues would be welcome! I get major hip pain walking outdoors more than 6 minutes. read more

Montgomery College (Rockville Campus) is often referred to by high school students as "Harvard on the Pike", and one of the Deans mentioned that MC was "one of the county's best kept secrets" (meaning the public really didn't take full advantage of what MC has to offer older teens and all ages of adults). There is a vast array of classes and the price is great for the quality of program received. Also the College has transfer arrangements with the local universities so what you take at MC can be applied to your degree at, for example, University of Maryland. Two years at MC then two years at UMD gives a great education with a full four year degree earned. And it is a relatively inexpensive way for students to get the core college classes out of the way at an inexpensive price as well as explore several disciplines before locking in to a particular one. That said, the quality of the individual classes swings from great to lousy. I am an older professional who likes to dabble in classes there and I also used two years of my GI bill (military educational benefits) there as well. I took computer classes and found the evening classes overall were better quality, as well as the ones at Germantown campus were better than the ones at Rockville (possibly the quality of the students as the evening students were in a large part more attentive and serious than the day students). I took art classes and found many students felt the instructor owed them an "A" even if they did sloppy work or other classes where the class couldn't get their work done because seniors not taking that particular class were in there hogging all the workspace because they signed up for one art class and stayed the whole day in the classroom and had their own little social group - and woe be it if we tried to nudge our way to a table to get some workspace during our assigned class time. I took PE classes (and became a certified personal trainer) and learned a lot, partly from the instructors and partly from the students themselves as they coached me (guess they felt bad for an old student in a PE class...lol). I took some continuing ed classes and found those to be much different from the for-credit classes, just different but not in a bad or good way since there were no 'tests' and you were to get out of the course whatever you put into the course. I took an online for-credit class and dropped out of it because the instructor was lousy (and he didn't start on the first day of the class because he was 'in China'). Another class I took I had to do a team project and three of the six didn't bother to show for our team meeting. And the experiences go on and on...good and bad. I found some amazing instructors who were passionate about what they taught and also wanted to make sure the student got the best learning environment available. I found instructors that couldn't instruct or were there just for the income, and suffered through classes with students who were very disruptive and other students who felt they didn't have to come to the final exam because it conflicted with their 'schedule'. Some instructors bowed to the harassment and others wouldn't. Needless to say this massive variety allows students to find just the right instructors to suit their particular goals (slopping through a class or actually learning something). Be sure to check out the visiting artist venue at Parilla Performing Arts Center - they've got some great shows that come through and there isn't a bad seat in the small auditorium, though the first few rows are too close for me. I won't recommend the student performed shows as I saw a few and decided that they were no better than the high school performances I attended. But if you know the performers it would be fun to come and support them. read more
