This was our regular coffee/breakfast place while we stayed for 6 nights near Kensington High Street station. We would usually order inside at the counter and sit outside where they'd bring it to us. The inside feels like you're in a French cafe. They do have full service, but ordering at the counter speeds up the process. A lot of regulars were in and out for take away. Don't take my word for it since I'm from the USA, go check it out for yourself. read more

Came here to hide from the rain on a Monday and we were welcomed by such friendly staff! We got croissants and a lemon tart. The croissants were incredibly buttery and soft (in a good way) and the almond filling was absolutely delightful. You can even ask them to warm it up for you, which we did. The lemon tart wasn't too sweet and the crust was super soft and crunchy at the same time. The real winner is that we left one of our shopping bags and the staff was nice enough to run after us to get our attention. We also paid for an extra bottle of water, so he came running with that as well! Super cute inside and lots of people working and catching up. Would come again! read more

Cute little spot great for pastries, coffee and some breakfast items but the omelettes and crepes were a bit underwhelming. The classic omelette is just a fried flat scrambled egg with nothing in it. I guess if you know that's what you're getting, then you are better than me at ordering. Someone else in my party got an omelette with vegetables and some cheese and it was average. The crepe was solid but nothing special. Stick with the drinks and breads/pastries and you will be better off. read more

Ironically enough, we came here right before we left for Paris. I ordered the ham and cheese on a panini which was tasty and crisp. My husband got the salmon on a baguette which he enjoyed. The man who helped us spoke both English and French and was very pleasant! We also got an almond croissant and chocolate hazelnut pastry to go just to try it... we came back the next day after breakfast around the corner to buy more! We headed here after the Kensington palace closed at 4pm (winter timings) Unfortunately Montparnasse's hot kitchen also closes at the same time. We had to settle for coffee and a reheated sausage roll which was quite good & made us wish even harder that we had found the kitchen open. They serve a range of crepes and salads and sandwiches. But once the kitchen closes, for an hour you can get hot coffee and pastries or sandwiches that are on the shelves. The place is very cosy and I loved the seating style. I'd love to return for a hot meal. read more

I figured I could find one in London, and Montparnasse more than fit the bill. We arrived a few minutes before they opened and were greeted to fresh pastries upon entering. There were a number of different ones to choose from, but an almond croissant is a great litmus test for me, so I decided to order both it and a fruit tart. They offered fresh squeezed orange juice as well, so I opted for a glass. The almond croissant was fabulous, with light flaky crispy layers and a wonderful filling. It was still warm from the oven and was easily the best almond croissant I have ever had. The fruit tart, likewise, was delicious, with a very nice crust, rich tasty cream, and topped with a raspberry and powdered sugar. The fresh squeezed orange juice was a perfect complement and also tasted wonderful. Needless to say it was a fabulous breakfast. The ambiance in the café had a very Parisian feel, and you could almost be convinced that you were in Paris rather than London. The service was great and quite warm, making me feel almost as if I was at home. The prices seemed quite appropriate, and the quality was second to none. If you are looking for a fantastic French bakery in London, you need to pay Montparnasse Café a visit. read more

J'adore! A bunch of attractive French guys run this place. Honestly, 5-stars. Ok, ok, ok...they are more than a pretty face. I'll elaborate. Tucked away on Thackeray Street (away from the hustle of High Street Kensington), Montparnasse Cafe couldn't have been more dazzling today. *A coffee (flat white) enjoyed on their curbside cafe tables in the sunshine was just about bliss. *A luscious mozzarella and tomato/basil/olive salad arrived to my table no less than 3 minutes after ordering. Fresh as a flower, tasty as a treat. For less than 6 quid!? Surely I could not be in West London with these prices! But indeed, it is. *I scooped up 3 tarts for my colleagues so they could share in my Paris-inspired morning joy: lemon, almond, strawberry. There were no crumbs remaining. They do what they do so incredibly well. Fresh, flavorful cafe food (sandwiches, panini, pastry) made from scratch. Great coffee. The only thing un-Parisian is the service...and I mean that as a compliment, of course! If you'd like to step back in time a bit and lose yourself in a bit of Paris, this is your spot. I love bakeries. I love London. I love French people. I love French food. I love coffee. I love quiche. Luckily, I managed to find all of these loves in one place: Montparnasse Cafe. It's a bit hard to find, tucked back on Thackeray Street between a horse-riding equipment store and a tile-designing shop. But you'll feel GREAT once you find it. Everytime I went there (which was A LOT when I lived in Kensington), I felt like I had been transported back to Paris (minus the urine and smoke smells). The servers were all French expats and always willing to engage in some French conversation with me. And if Bastien is still there, well, he still holds a little place in my heart. I'll always have a crush on him! Max, who seemed to be the cafe's manager, was rugged, handsome, and outgoing. The place is great for families enjoying a weekend brunch before heading over to nearby Hyde Park. Or you can find students there from the American University around the corner. I always felt welcome and was never let down by the food or the service. They'd let me stay for hours while I sipped away on a creamy cafe latte and wrote my thesis. It has a very old-world antique feel that I just lived in. Like the Exeter Street Bakery, I long to go back to Montparnasse Cafe and waste away the hours in my little French bubble! read more

This little French cafe is delightful! It's a cute little place and the service was/is incredible! My wife and I came by here on our visit to London as it was nearby the apartment we stayed at. We visited on our first day in the city and enjoyed a cappuccino along with a couple of pastries. The pastries were crispy, sweet, and baked just right. The cappuccino was also very delicious and served quickly and in a warm mug. My favorite thing about this place though is the environment! It's quaint and throwback! It looks like everything you would want in a French cafe! In the back, there are windows facing out into a little courtyard. And on those windows, there's a cute bench where you can sit and relax while reading a book and sipping your coffee. The staff is very helpful and sincere, and they want to make sure you have great service and a great experience. Overall, I would highly recommend this place if you're nearby!! read more

Montparnasse is my favorite quick cafe where I wish I had more time to spend in between classes. Their heated chocolate croissants are delicious, but I have yet to try the infamous almond croissant! They've been sold out by the time I get there, so if you can, grab one in the morning. Cash is preferred as they will charge 50pp for card transactions. read more

You have to love the staff here, they're just so friendly and talkative. Bonus points if you try and practice your French with them! The crepes are lovely, I often opt for a cheese and ham, and I love the Tuna Melt Panini. There is something they do to it that makes it taste divine. It does usually come out a little crispy with contents spilling, and maybe that's it. The ham and cheese was pretty good, but comes second place in my book. The quality is pretty good, they do really seem to have a love of food here that translates into the taste. One day I'll come for a cake, they are really appealing, but I worry about getting this back to the office and it's that time of day I usually visit where I've already had my daily coffee intake. The décor is very laid back, a little shabby, but more characterful than anything. I can't really comment. They charge +50p to £1 on items to dine in, so I usually take lunch back to the office. Thank you Simon, great recommendation and after my trip across town I'm not disappointed to find filter coffee (oh yes) and an array of treat-like-pastries that were totally delicious. It's quite off the beaten track this one so you'll have to iPhone app it to find the place but you can see why! Step over the channel and land in France. After the tasty looking French server takes your order you can sit amongst the strangely creepy and funny "antiques" as well as a selection magazines in french. I was highly bemused by the tacky "Shepard's girlfriend with a lamb at her feet" lamp that was in my eye line. But this was all cute and actually adds to the charm. The place has ample seating inside with a very sweet floral sofa seat. As I mentioned - a wonderful coffee shop. Great place to spend a few lazy hours. read more

I discovered this with my other half when we had spent a wintry afternoon walking around Hyde Park. As we stumbled across this little cafe I couldn't quite be live how cosy and pretty it was inside. This place is French, really French. And when I first visited you could still smoke inside. Now, I know the smoking ban is great for everyone, but, as a casual smoker there was something quite Parisian and romantic about sipping on an excellent coffee and reading the Sunday papers in smoky surroundings. Now, the place is full of families at lunchtime which kind of kills the atmosphere, but you can't have everything. As you walk in you're presented with a display of numerous pastries, sandwiches and fruit desserts. Everything I've had here has been gorgeous. From excellent pain au chocolat to sesame seed encrusted panninis this place has it all. Towards the back of the cafe is a slightly raised seating area, surrounded by books, lamps and other front room paraphernalia. Cosy - to the max. Don't be surprised if you spend longer than you anticipated or ordering that second or third latte. The seating area outside is small, but in the summer this isn't a problem as the sun beats down on your face. Montparmasse is a hidden gem. Yes, it's in a very rich area of town, but bugger it - go and discover it for yourself. I've taken several friends, colleagues and members of my family here, it's that good. Having escaped from the chaos of Kensington for just a moment, you will feel as if time slows down while you're in this café. The French magazines, staff, food and atmosphere almost make you forget that you're in the middle of London, thinking that instead you've been transplanted into a homely French café. I espied a pot of filter coffee on a burner behind the counter and asked if it was fresh. I don't think I actually got an answer from the Frenchman with the ingratiating manner who served me, and I soon found out why. Because it wasn't. Still, the pastries and little carafe of steamed soya milk that came on the side of the cup of coffee made up for it. Plus, there's always espresso to fall back on. Montparmasse Café is a little pricey but totally worth it for the area of town and the welcome respite from it. read more

My family and I were in London for a vacation and my daughter had her fifth birthday so I wanted to get her a breakfast treat. I did a Yelp search for bakeries and discovered Montparnasse Cafe. The staff were extremely friendly and helped me pick out three pastries: a chocolate one, a white chocolate one, and an apple one. I also got a ham and cheese sandwich for my son, and an Americano for myself. Everything was excellent and it was a great beginning for my daughter's fifth birthday! The interior is also lovely - it would be a great place to sit and do some writing over coffee. Definitely five stars! read more

Very cute bakery café off of the busy Kensington High Street. As a tourist in London, being off the busy popular named box stores on KH Street is a treat. I thought I was lost looking for this place. But, trusting GPS on Iphone, I found this place without any problems. Really cute cobble stone street with a very European look. Croissants were really good. Very comparable with those in France. We did get there close to closing time so selection was bare. But, they were nice enough to gather enough for our breakfast the next morning. read more
