Love him or hate him, Christopher Columbus (in Spanish, Cristóbal Colón) was sent on a mission by the Castilian crown to discover a western route to the orient. Between 1492 and 1503, Columbus completed four round-trip voyages between Spain and the Americas, each voyage being sponsored by the Crown of Castile. Columbus always insisted that the lands he visited were part of the Asian continent as described by Marco Polo and other European explorers.
The tall column with the three-meter call statue of Columbus atop it was installed in 1885. The gothic base features reliefs on all four sides depicitng scenes related with the discovery of America. Columbus is wearing a tunic and cape, holding the flag of Castile.
