Monuts is definitely more than just doughnuts. Their biscuits are so flaky and they make super creative biscuit, bagel, and normal sandwiches that are always so good. Their pastry case always has something new and delicious. I have tried their lemon scone and it is extremely good. The doughnuts are truly some of my favorite especially because of the creative flavors. They have yeast risen doughnuts and cake doughnuts (which are my favorite). They have many creative flavors like strawberry lavender and chocolate coffee cardamom. They also have a full coffee bar. They normally have indoor seating and you order up at the counter. It can get super crowded on weekends and it is still so during the pandemic. They closed for a bit at the beginning of the pandemic but are now open again for take out orders only with a limited menu (but still super good). They have quite a system where you order online and get a pickup time, then when you get a text that it is almost ready you can check in at the tent and then stand by the door where they come out and call out your order. It was pretty seamless but the line to check in was getting pretty long on the Saturday I went so definitely be prepared to possibly wait. read more

We had about 8 dozen sitting in the break room and i must admit the first thing that caught my attention was the presentation of how they were laid out in the box. They were sorted by type so it looked really fancy. The boxes were branded and the donuts were perfectly shaped. I grabbed an apple glazed and a cinnamon sugar. Both were great donuts. Also, they start their employees at $16/hr minimum and will be good to support them. We had their dark and stormy (chocolate cake donut with glaze) and blueberry coffee cake donut today. I love yeast donuts, and this is a solid spot for great donuts in the Durham area. A few week ago, I got a couple of yeast donuts to-go and loved them both. They have a very neat system for curbside pickup. It's great that they operate from the parking lot for curbside pickup that allows people to maintain physical distance when waiting for their order. The perfect food pick-up set-up for Covid-19: there's a little kiosk in their parking lot and customers stand outdoors, masked, 6 feet apart, to pick up orders that were placed on the phone or online. Super safe! The food is fantastic. I ordered the biscuit sandwich with Brussels sprouts and egg--delicious and so flavorful (I skipped the sausage to make it vegetarian). My boyfriend got the fried chicken biscuit, and had rave reviews of it, as well as the ginger chai latte, which was good, not overly sweet with ginger flavor that really came through. This was my first time at Monuts and I can't believe it took me so long to come! We went for Sunday brunch and we had to order online about 90 minutes ahead, but I think if you order in person the wait is shorter. I got an everything bagel with avocado and eggs, which I thought was better than the bagel place downtown (Everything Bagel). I also got the cranberry earl grey donut (which was fantastic and super fluffy) and the vegan chocolate chip cookie (didn't taste like it didn't have butter at all). My latte was also pretty good. I heard that Monuts Donuts recently moved to their new location on 9th Street and of course promptly showed up tonight to check out their new digs. They now have their own parking lot and there's also street parking available. When I came tonight on a Tuesday at 7:30pm they had sold out of all donuts except orange poppyseed and apple cider. Apparently others too have discovered their reopening besides me! The new location is more spacious and sleek and I love the booths that look like DIY pallets! They also have bar seating and modern lighting. I only had to wait in line for 5 minutes, whereas at the old location the line went all the way through the front door because it was 3 times smaller than this new location! They still have the nifty water spout where you can get your own water. I ordered 2 orange poppyseed donuts and they were were warm and chewy and doughy with orange glaze. I inhaled the entire thing in all its sweet warm goodness and it was gone before I knew it. My friends ordered hot tea and hot chocolate which was brought to the table by the waitress. The black tea comes loose leaf in a beautiful French press, and had a flowery fragrance. Apparently the coffee here is amazing as well. I loved the original Monuts and can go on an on about the delicious bagel sandwiches with oozing egg yolk, scrumptious donuts and small shop with local flare and lines out the door. I frequented the old location many times and everything was perfect. I decided to try the new location on 9th street and saw they still draw a crowd and the line wrapped outside.. It was a Sunday morning in December and I was so excited to try the new venue. We snagged a seat at the bar and waited. The server cleared the things from the previous diners but was not really friendly and we had to ask for a menu. I liked how at the other Monuts there were bagel specials with all the ingredients already put together. The new approach is more of a build-your-own-bagel-sandwich approach so I had to remember all the yummy ingredients I had from Parrish street. The bagel sandwich was good just not as delicious as I remembered it from Parrish street and it just felt like it was a more hasty environment trying to keep up with the orders. I had to ask for a coffee refill. I then ordered donuts to take home to savor the delicious donuts at home. I asked for one of each daily special donut yet somehow the order got lost in translation. I did not notice it until I got home but the server did not get the order right. Also, all of the donuts were thrown into a bag and not put in a box like at the other location. If I am going to order a half dozen donuts and pay over $2 a piece, I would like a box and not a bag of smashed donuts. Other than that, things were great and maybe it was just the kinks of the new location. I hope to get a more cheerful server and one that is more on his or her A-game. I've been to Monuts many times over the past few years and always leave happy. Their service is prompt and friendly, even during the busiest times, and their food is just great! Monuts does get extremely crowded on weekend mornings and holidays. The line is often out the door by 10 am or so, so come prepared to wait a bit. We always try to scope out a seat at the bar, but if there's nothing there we'll order at the counter and find a table after. The advantage of ordering at the counter is you can get a good look at all of that day's donuts and pastries in the display case! Regardless of the crowds, the service we get is consistently excellent. Of course the donuts at Monuts are always on point. They always have a selection of 3-4 cake and 3-4 yeast donuts. I'm usually not a big fan of cake donuts but Monuts' are something else. They're incredibly soft and tender, and not dry like some other places' cake donuts. If it's your first time then definitely get their signature cake donut, apple cider. The yeast are delicious too, of course. The donut flavors are vibrant and rich - the fruit, chocolate, and spice flavors are strong! Today we had the blueberry passion fruit and lemon coconut donuts which were bursting with fruity flavor as always. Monuts other food is also great. Their menu changes fairly frequently, though some staples stick around, like their chicken and pickles sandwich. It's a fried chicken breast with hot honey, herby ranch, and pickles on a biscuit - so delicious! Today we got the new "Everyday I'm Brusselin'" sandwich which is white cheddar, roasted shaved brussels, sausage, egg, and apple butter on a biscuit. (Can't you tell we love their biscuits?) This sandwich was delicious and very different from any other breakfast sandwich I've had! You can tell that whoever comes up with their menu is very talented and creative. We have a had a couple of things at Monuts we didn't care for. The maple sriracha potatoes were a bit disappointing, for example. Also, although they serve one of my favorite coffee brands (Counter Culture), their drip coffee always seems to have a bit of an unpleasant flavor. While I still love this place, it bothers me that they will not do substitutions. I wanted to order the Turkey, Avocado, and Bacon Sandwich (with no cheese) on the focaccia bread instead of the multigrain and they would not substitute it for me. Nice place to visit for weekend brunch/breakfast but you can always expect a big line no matter when you go! That's how busy they get, but the good news is it's fairly easy to find a table as the crowd keeps coming and going quickly. During this visit we got the Channa chaat which tasted fine but felt the addition of a piece of bread or puri would have made it more filling. Also got the roasted beet foccacia (no bacon) sandwich which was tasty but wish it was grilled or heated a bit. And finally we got the dark choc sea salt donut which we ended up taking home because we were so full, but unfortunately it did not taste good the next day, and moreover there was too much salt on the donut. It would be great if they allowed substitutions in their meals because there aren't many vegetarian options and not a lot to choose from so we end up paying more for the same meat dish without the meat. After exclusively getting takeout from Monuts for quite a while, I decided to dine in. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, and it was easy to find parking. They were in their 'coffee shop hours' so the menu was limited. When I reached the counter, I was greeted by the employee. I ordered a hot chocolate and then asked if they still had bagels (the menu said while supplies last). He said yes and then just stared blankly at me. Normally, you would expect to be told what options they have available, but after several more awkward moments of silence, I asked what bagels they have available. They had a couple of types left, so I ordered a plain bagel. Silence again. Then I asked what kind of cream cheese they had left. He listed the options, and I ordered scallion and chive. I mention all this because it's a very common occurrence for Monuts to run out of types of bagels/cream cheese on the weekend when ordering online, so I didn't want to assume what they still had at 2:30 on a Saturday. Also, it just was such an awkward interaction, and I felt like I was painfully extracting information from him. I also ordered an orange creamsicle donut. The donut came out to my table pretty quickly, and it was very good. The bagel followed soon after, and although it was barely toasted (I had opted for toasted), it tasted pretty good. When the bagel arrived, the employee took my table number away, which was weird to me because my hot chocolate still hadn't arrived. I went back to the counter and asked about my hot chocolate, and it turns out that the employee had never put the order for that in. Once that was finally ready, I was done with all of my food. The hot chocolate was 70% whipped cream, which while delicious, filled the majority of the already small mug. The hot chocolate underneath it was good but lukewarm. All in all, I had a pretty mixed experience. The food is not inexpensive here, so I was hoping for more in terms of consistency and customer service. We arrived around 8 in the morning and the place was already buzzing with families enjoying their morning breakfast and people grabbing donuts and coffee before heading off to work. You order before you sit down and the menu is simple and not too overwhelming. With an assortment of sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and variety of drinks from coffee to mimosas, the options at Monuts catered to everyone. I enjoy hearty meals to start my day so I ordered the ooey gooey gouda on an everything bagel. And let me tell you, it was probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a while! The egg was cooked to perfection (over easy) and the golden yolk dripped down the side of the sandwich as I cut into it. The textures were all there: the softness of the egg, chewiness of the bacon, and the crispy toasted out portion of the bagel. The best part was the sweet contrast from the tomato jam, so good! Donut forget to try their famous donuts as well. My favorite was the hibiscus lemon donut. With its brightly pink glaze, the donut was a perfect combination of sweet and tart. The 'icing on top' was the candied ginger sprinkled on top which gave the donut nice little crunchy surprises. Atmosphere here was great. It did get a little too loud as the place became crowded. Pretty much everything you get here is going to be tasty. After being around for a while, I do realize their seasonal menu repeats quite a bit. I sometimes wish they'd come out with a completely new seasonal menu. However, I love that they make sure what they're putting out is in season and good. Service has always been kind. We pretty much always get a pastry of some sort with our order - they're donuts are soo good and I really love their cinnamuffins. This is my favorite donut place in Durham, as well as being one of my favorite brunch places in general. The line is always long, so go knowing that. However, it moves quickly and there's no seat-saving, so you can always find a place to sit once you've gone through the line. When I lived nearby I used to come here all the time for donuts and sandwiches! We ordered takeout donuts recently when we were nearby and liked the unique donuts so much the first time we had to come back to try other flavors! Our first order we got a caramel latte donut and a peanut butter chocolate donut. There was a mistake in the online order but we were able to call them and fix it easily over the phone. The caramel latte was our favorite of these two, but the peanut butter chocolate was decadent and delicious too! The second time we got a pumpkin chai donut, a maple pecan one, and pep it up sandwich. In the online order form we asked for the sandwich to be cut in half to share, and they wrote a note w our order that they couldn't cut it in half (probably because of the egg + other ingredients in it), but they helpfully included a knife for us to use. Both times picking up online orders were seamless. I like that the online ordering system reflects if an item is low (like if there are only a few left for a certain donut flavor!), and they have a great setup for picking up takeout orders from their parking lot. read more

Seating: Arrived at 12 on a Friday and it was full but we were able to snag a table and we ordered without waiting. By 1pm the tables were clearing out. Overall a pretty casual spot. Food: I ordered the Turkish Eggs. Loved the dish because of the robust flavors and good mix of textures with the crispy bread, smooth yogurt, and nicely scrambled eggs. I also tried the guava cream cheese donut which was tasty, with good mix of flavors and a nice doughy texture. I also recently tried a slice of Earl grey and blueberry layer cake which was so good! Who would think to put those flavors together?! Love it! They use seasonal and local (I believe) ingredients so the menu changes every couple months or so. One of my favorite breakfast menu items is the chilaquiles. I would say that depending on who prepares it, sometimes there is too much of the delicious sauce and it makes the crispy chips soggy. Otherwise, the sauce they use is SO flavorful, and everything balances out really well. I've had the breakfast burritos, a bagel sandwich, biscuit sandwich, and iced coffee as well. You really can't go wrong with anything here. The parking lot is very small here and fills up FAST, but there is street parking also. There is always a line first thing Sunday mornings. Also, they ask that you order BEFORE you grab and save a table. I love the vibe and look of the inside of the restaurant, I just wish there was a lot more seating available. However, that being said, I wouldn't want them to compromise on quality just to make room for more customers. It's worth getting up early to beat the crowd. There's also an interesting lunch menu and the wait staff seems to genuinely enjoy their jobs. The location is easy to access and there is plenty of onsite or street parking. Seating can get challenging, but there is an old school counter and common tables means the turnover should accommodate everyone except for the largest groups. Be sure to check out photos before you go so that you can order with some idea of what you're craving. However, it's doubtful you'll end up with anything disappointing. For a place with many positive reviews and known for long lines, I expected plenty of parking but their lot is small (about ten cars) and many must resort to street parking (typical for downtown area businesses). I had hoped to try at least four different flavored donuts but when I arrived at 1:15pm, the place was down to only 'Coconut Lime' and 'Dark + Strong' donuts. Ordered are: 'Lox of Love'... a bagel sandwich that wasn't great nor bad; the bagel itself could have been softer 'Peach Scone'... the peach middle is a tad too sweet but overall a decent scone 'Dark + Strong Donut'... for those who enjoy dark chocolate, this is a great donut 'Natalie's Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit Juice'... good if you like grapefruit Overall, food wasn't awful and customer service was cold. I got an iced latte, and my husband got a hot latte. Both of our favorite parts were our biscuits. My husband did bacon, egg and cheese (he gets this combo no matter where we go), and I was slightly more adventurous and did the Chicken and Pickle biscuit. I came to Monuts for the first time and enjoyed it. I got the chicken biscuit, which was good, although a bit sweeter than I am used to from the honey. The chicken was really well cooked & it was a filling portion. I also tried a couple donuts - the cookie monster and a sweet potato donut - and both were great.
