We arrived on Friday for our reservation at 1 pm and there were two or three other groups there. The place is charming, with that homemade feel. They offer several options for afternoon tea, ranging from about £5 for a cake/scone and tea, to around £15 for the finger foods and lunch options. I opted for the former and had a scone with grapes (they were out of plain scones) and lemon ginger tea. My wife had the same scone with chamomile. We were both very impressed with the quality of the food and the lovely service we were given. They have more than just tea. They make proper cakes and serve breakfast and lunch, as well as offer unique specials. This is place is a must try!

In the daytime, it is your typical little café, offering cappuccinos, lattes, various panninis and the like. However, it is of an evening when Café D'Art comes alive, as Formby residents flock there long after the other local drinking establishments close (they have late opening hours, ideal for those poor souls craving a replacement for Shorrock's Hill, Europe's number 1 hotspot). The drinks there aren't very cheap but by the time you get there you're usually too pissed to care, plus the beer they have there is pretty good compared to your usual pub draughts. The only negative is its size, meaning it can be full without really being that busy, which usually results in the action spilling out onto the alley and round the corner into the village but if you don't mind the squeeze then I highly recommend Café D'Art as a place to drink through to the early hours.

Of a weekend there can be a real throng of locals in here dissecting the week's events over a vodka tonic or a petite glass of beer. The walls of the establishment are hung with local art, usually of a surprisingly high quality and in a variety of styles, all of which is available for purchase. Definitely one of the best destinations in Formby for a drink, some light lunch or some art-gazing. Fantastic.

The restaurant features freshly made dishes made with homegrown seasonal produce. While visiting our family in Liverpool, we came here as a group for afternoon tea. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been here before, so they knew it was great and brought us back, along with my husband's grandparents. Do take note, you have to book your table in advance. We sat in one of the backrooms which was very cozy and inviting, albeit a bit noisy from a rowdy group of "ladies who lunch," but it was fine once they left. We all really appreciated that savory items were included in the the afternoon tea. The menu features a selection of sandwiches, savouries, a cup of soup, a bucket of chips, a selection of cakes and a mini trifle. Plus your choice of a pot of tea or cup of filter coffee. I was happily surprised at the wide variety of teas! There was ample to eat. My husband and I ate our entire afternoon tea, but everyone else in our group had a few sweet treats left to take home. Mothers Day Surprise!…read more We wanted to take the Mothers somewhere nice and out of town and had seen The Garden Kitchen had been visited by a number of our friends and family on Facebook, all giving great reviews and I can see why! We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. The chocolate melts in your mouth to find small nuggets of biscuit and mini marshmallows.....all washed down with a great cup of coffee. John & Kate who own and run The Garden Kitchen have done a fanstastic job transforming Holden Clough Nursery over the last few years. The service, quality of food and surroundings are 10/10. I went with my mum, sister and partner for the Valentine's afternoon tea, it was great it was so different from traditional afternoon tea you got soup in a tea cup, two open top sandwiches and a mini quiche which was a nice change from just sandwiches. The cakes you got was a scone. A mini red velvet cake, a heart biscuit, marshmallows with chocolate, profiterole with white chocolate and a mini love potion in a glass boot. We got a glass of pink proseco it was £19.99 each which is a little expensive for the place as its a tree nursery but they do a different theme for different seasons so it's well worth a visit.
