I've been attending Endstation summer productions (both at Poplar Forest and at Old City Cemetery)…read morefor two summers now, and I recommend their productions. For one thing, I just love community theater. There's something fresh about it that you just don't get at an overpriced Broadway production (and believe me, I know - as a former NYC-er, I've been to my share of shows on and off Broadway). Plus, the venues for summer productions have included outdoor spots like Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest estate, for Shakespeare-inspired productions two years running, and Old City Cemetery for 'Our Town' (the grounds of which lent the production an unparalleled poignancy). I stop short of 5 stars, because it's not always been clear whether there will be refreshments available, and at the most recent Poplar Forest production, there was only a booth with hard cider -- no nonalcoholic options at all. But all in all? A great time. Bring a lawn chair, your own snacks and beverage, and slather on some bug repellent (it's summertime in central Virginia, after all....can we say no-see-ums and skeeters? We sure can), and bring something with which to fan yourself, if southern humidity makes you sweat. And then settle in and enjoy the show. And wait for the unexpected magic of fireflies coming out in the deepening twilight in the second half of the show. Better than footlights at any other venue you've been to, I'm willing to bet.

Community "little theater" at its best- Productions are done about once in two months and are in…read morethe round, mostly. There is no doubt that the actors are not full time professionals, but they do very well. No seat is more than thirty or forty feet from the stage, so the audience can easily be somewhat involved in the play. Prices are about $18 each and seats are reserved. If you're interested in participating in the production in any capacity, their web site will describe how to do so, and the schedule for upcoming auditions. Lots of fun for a weekend evening and good for groups if you order tickets well ahead of the performance. You can hob-nob with the case in the lobby after the performance. There's a little snack bar for before and intermission. The lobby is a comfortable place to wait as it is furnished more like someones living room. Parking is free in a lot diagonally across the street from the theater. It's a little hard to find at night so check out the location during the day if you have never been there.

nice little mom and pop shop in central Virginia directly on the beaten path but still a…read moresignificant ways out of the way regardless. after dropping the cutest of chicks off at CLT to go to FLA I have the rest of the afternoon to try to stay out of trouble... it's just a couple hours to get here and I get to meet some new faces and go roundy round for a couple bucks. the raceway is currently housed in a simple building on highway 460 just west of Appomattox with SLOT CAR RACING spelled out in 24-inch letters. yeah, totally subtle... current tracks include road, oval, and straight line. I will generally drive the road courses when I'm out because it's all driver-vs-track with up to seven other contests going on at roughly the same time... high banks mean high speed and the Gerding King road course is both. even the main straight is tilty! thought my car was going to slide off the track when I set it down on orange; it was moving sort of slideways and hanging on the guide as I started my first lap because the tilt is that aggressive! felt totally out classed and way out of my league for a long minute... but that brief bit of uncertainty makes Mach 1 stand out for me and the need to stay fast all the way around builds character - the skill part is knowing when to "fast" and when to brake. drags and ovals are generally better with a couple other racers to taunt and tease and are usually populated by a dedicated and friendly group on race day. circle track racers are a peaceful and happy people, but like all 'cults' it can take up a good deal of your time and resources ;-) Mach 1 has what it takes to get you on the track and keep you there: they have rentals to get you started or you can pick up ready to drive or build-it-yourself cars in your choice of styles and colors, plus parts and accessories to personalize whatever it is you decide to run. I have a basic factory built that can mostly keep up. I'm not likely to win any serious competition but I'm on the track here and there and elsewhere primarily for the adventure...

They had families, girlfriends, friends, farms, etc. No other museum I've been to has been able to capture the detail that this one does. If you get the chance to visit, please talk to Chris if he is around. He was very friendly and gave me my own little tour. He also seems to know everything about all the Bedford boys and their things in the tribute center. I can't say enough good things about this establishment. I will definitely be stopping in when I have more time.

Dedicated specifically to the Bedford boys and remembering them. The center is small but packed with meaning -- located in the original drugstore where news of the D-Day losses first reached the town. Ken and Linda gave one of the best, most genuine tours I've ever had. You can tell how much care and passion they've put into preserving the stories of the young men from Bedford who were part of Company A. It's not just names on a wall -- these are full lives, memories, families, and sacrifices, honored with much respect and attention to detail. You'll see real letters, uniforms, personal effects... things that hit different when you're standing where their stories started and ended. Thank you, Ken and Linda, for making history personal and for keeping the memory of these men alive. This place deserves every bit of attention it can get.

They have a nice concessions that isn't pricey. The staff is always great and tonight was no exception. We were checked in quickly and with a smile. They offer coat check so you can be free to wonder without bulky items. The production is top quality as usual and really is a must see for the Christmas season! We laughed, were drawn in emotionally, and rejoiced when Scrooge found his way!

I've been to broadway, and the actors here are honesty better. Every one of these actors played their parts with such feeling, they really dragged you into the play. I was moved beyond words. What an incredible cast!! By the end of the play, you felt like you knew every actor there. Their voices were incredible too! My only criticism is at the very end of the play, they should get together so the audience can take one picture of everyone. I highly recommend seeing any play this company performs. I wish we didn't live so far away, we would be regulars! We will be back every year now!
