The Second sons were able to acquire land and start new with fellow country men. It is a living Victorian Village with wonderful preservation of the buildings. There is the Visitor Centre, with wonderful Films & exhibits. The church is stunning and look at the wavy glass windows. The Commissary has unique gifts, like imported English items and local artist creations. The School House (museum) is a blast from the past! And the Harrow Road Cafe has great food & drinks.

Harriman was originally a planned alcohol-free city that would set an example for the nation. Built in 1891, this was actually the main hall, Temperance Hall, for the American Temperance University. I mean, could you imagine the entrance essay required for admissions? Teehee. Okay, all jokes aside this building is in very good shape on the outside. I love the stone arch entryway. And the turrets are super cool. After it closed the building became a jail and now serves as a museum/offices holding a host of archives. To the locals, it's the coolest building for Christmas lighting. Its all locked up for safety as it get's renovated. but you can still peer inside the windows and see a lot. You like ghost stories? All I remember is...I'm taking pics and next thing you know I get this very bad feeling. VERY VERY VERY BAD FEELING. Like in a sixth sense kind of way. Like someone or something is following me. Total goosebumps. Feels like someone inside waiting to zombie attack me. I think I stepped a little too close to the window. Or maybe they don't want their picture taken? Holy beejezus I ran away from this building like a wee little girl. Days later I did a little research. Turns out there's a huge following that his place is haunted. Was featured in several ghost hunter publications. Check it out. Or don't. Me? I prefer to sleep at night. If I still can. That was WAY too real.

It's completely out of place as there is no airport anywhere in the vicinity and there aren't any airplane related businesses nearby. But that anachronism doesn't make it any less awesome! It was built in 1930 as a service station owned by Henry and Elmer Nickle. It was a full service station with fuel under the left wing and oil changes under the right wing. Back in the day, Highway 25 was a busy roadway but as time passed and I-75 was built, the motorists didn't come as often. In the 1960s it was a liquor store and then a produce store and then a bait shop before it was finally abandoned in 2000. Slated for demolition, the community rallied around the airplane and raised money from bake sales and tourism grants. It has since been recovered and restored to its original 1931 standards. It was barber shop for some time and now... I don't know what but it was being touched up when I stopped by. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It is easiest to access if you are heading south into Knoxville. Watch the traffic and pull into the neighboring used car lot, take your pictures, and be on your way. And if you go to the print shop, be prepared to spend at least 45 minutes there because Beth will teach you everything you'd ever want to know about the craft back then, and then some! All told, if you take the tour and then take time to read things on your own about the history of the town and visit the gift shops, you'll be in Rugby about 2.5 hrs. not counting your visit to RM Brooks Store which is about 2 miles out. Don't miss that! It's a great place to eat lunch!

Originally founded in 1880 by British author Thomas Hughes. Enjoyed waking a couple blocks to see the original buildings and visitors center. We also enjoyed a nice lunch outdoors at Harrow Road Cafe.
