One of the better Morrison's in the Edinburgh area. I regularly frequent this one and the Gilmerton store, and the contrast in standard between the two is very evident. In fairness Portobello Road's Willy M recently went under an overhaul, introducing a revitalised rotisserie, butcher, delicatessen, etc., while extending the back area to accommodate new chillers and a lovely fresh bakers. Most notably the fresh produce area has been redesigned and laid out well, introducing a particularly good herb garden. The selection is probably the best I've seen. Offers are regular and fair. I particularly love timing it right to get all the discounted butchers, bakers and candlestick mak-- I mean rotisserie fare at the end of the day. Good for a monthly shop. Loses one star for not stocking Calippos anymore. read more

As far as Morrisons goes, this isn't a bad one. They have more fresh produce on show than most other of the franchise, including fresh beets and the occasional shipment of Pomelo, which excites my partner more than is rationally expected. Then again, my obsession with fresh beets is maybe just as strange. The staff span the gamut from surly to very friendly, so better than a lot of the big groceries, as you have to expect a certain range with so many people working there. Since I first put up my review Morrisons have moved with the times and now have a much expanded free-from section, including more frozen options, etc. Their Quorn selection is still limited (no steak strips!) and frequently sold out, but it's overall a much better place for vegetarian products now. This used to be my local supermarket and I never realised how lucky I was at the time. The fresh fruit and vegetables are consistently the best quality I have found in a UK supermarket and the prices tend to be somewhere between Asda and Tesco and the budget stores, Lidl and Aldi. The alcohol section is also particularly good, with a massive range of imported and speciality beers and almost too much choice in the wine aisle. The only downside is the security guard who seems overly paranoid and often follows you around this has led to my making some hasty wine choices over the years, although I've never been disappointed. There are some really good deals on groceries, particularly around Christmas time. read more

The shopping centre is located next to the petrol station and has a good car park. The size of the store is medium but it is very well supplied. I prefer it to Tesco or Lidl with regard to fresh produce although the prices could be a bit up to the ones in the prevously mentioned chains. One of the best features of the place is the cozy charming cafe inside and also the ivaluable presence of toilets. read more

I'm increasingly convinced there is no over all superlative supermarket that has everything I regularly need at good prices. Those days are over and prices are climbing while quality and selection are on the wane. That said, even though Morrisons is flawed, it's a bit better than most of the big chains. I'm reviewing the Porty branch here. This store boasts a large produce area with good prices and selection, though there is a budget quality to the veg and fruit. No pretty specimens like Sainsburys but the prices make up for that. This branch has a good fishmonger, good bakery section, housewares section, seasonal items and a cafe of variable quality but reasonable prices housed in a small time capsule of the mid-1990's. Booze selection is okay for beer, no great bargains here but better scope than other chains and the wine selection is quite good with good bargains. Standout bargains are the MSavers budget line. Very cheap for tinned tomatoes, pasta, breakfast cereals, tortillas, yoghurt and honey. Olive oil, cheeses, frozen peas and so on. Worth a look. read more

Mojo's wins the battle for my supermarket loyalty. The prices on produce are the best of all the major chains. They do a very good line in class B produce. That's stuff of irregular or smaller sizes and the not quite glamorous but it's just as tasty as the nicer looking stuff. The big deal is the M Savers line. Their no-frills house brand. For things like Jaffa cakes, laundry detergent, cornflakes, pasta, honey, household cleaners you will not be able to beat these prices. Spend money on good stuff where you need to but why pay a pound for tinned tomatoes when you can pay 31p? The selection of beer and wine is decent too, though I remain shocked at how much beer has gone up lately. I also highly recommend the bakery at Morrisons. The bread and pies are yum and great value. Sorry Sainsbury's. You used to be my fave but I can't afford your inSAIN prices (see what I did there?). ASDA is now too big to negotiate without a golf cart and Tesco just sucks.
