The City Of Selfies is named as such because so many cute girls live in, or are from, Salford. For…read moreexample my cousin, Sarah, who used to do wet t-shirt contests in Blackpool when she was 16 (not kidding) and almost always won them. Yes I have some very good looking blonde girls in the white half of my family. And some very good looking brunette girls and guys in the Persian half too. It's a shame I didn't get any of the looks.
So let's get back to the life story and how Salford relates to it. This is review #1,991 because I lived here somewhere around 1991 or so, give or take a few years. I watched one of the World Cups here, I remember. But let's start from the start.
After my mother stole me away in the night, along with my brother, we lived in Salford for a year. I actually like Salford now, but at the time it was a racist hellhole. We weren't completely white, and had been brought up in a multicultural city (Oxford). To go from that, to being the only non-white kids in our class, was pretty tough. Salford was a particularly "hard" area, low income and difficult for us. It made me streetwise. It made me afraid of nothing. So I appreciate that. I lived on Deyne Street, close to exciting Langworthy Road (at the time), the train bridge on Derby Road where I'd go trainspotting, and the lovely Buile Hill Park, where aunties still live.
These days, Salford is a lovely place to visit. The Market is fun, the food is fantastic (especially Neil's Fryery on Langworthy Road, as well as Akbar's in Castlefields), and the schools I once attended have been shut down. The racism is, in part, gone, due to Manchester United having so many foreign players, and all of Greater Manchester having so many immigrants and yuppie or hipster types now.
I'm unquestionably giving Salford a 5 star rating, because I love it here and it's a very underrated and "real" part of Greater Manchester. But as a kid living there, being racially abused on a daily basis, learning how to fight and how to play football in the alleys and the gutters, while my mother was drunk in the pub 24 7... certainly, it was a 1 star back then. But you get older, you see things differently. I'll always love Salford now. Even though I'm a Liverpool fan - and always will be.
The City of Selfies. Inventing Selfies long before the rest of the world knew they existed. My gf's selfies are the best, so I'll have to take her here.
