    Mothman Statue, Point Pleasant
    Bruce K.

The 12-foot-tall statue stands in front of the Mothman Museum and commemorates the legend of this enduring piece of folklore. He was first reported on November 15, 1966, by two couples who saw a man-sized creature with glowing red eyes and wings near the abandoned TNT munitions area. Over the next year, dozens of sightings followed, describing a 7-foot-tall winged humanoid that could fly at speeds up to 100 mph and seemed to avoid light. Skeptics (and who listens to them?) suggest the creature was a misidentified sandhill crane or heron, both large birds with red markings around their eyes. I looked around carefully and saw no such creature. Maybe I should consider myself lucky. [Review 593 of 2025 - 176 in West Virginia - 24154 overall]

To Laura F. The review before mine. 3 stars because you didn't do your homework first... and the town is on a grid!! How did you get lost! Personally I'm a Shiny Hiney fan! So may years of seeing this statue and we finally got to take pictures with it. Point Pleasant is a cute town and this is all on a cute street.

I've been here several times over the years, but I decided to stop by on my way back to Ohio from North Carolina at about 2am. I definitely got a creepy vibe being the only one around at that hour - would recommend!

I was traveling down to North Carolina from Ohio. I passed a big green sign that said point Pleasant, West Virginia and went,"hmmmmm I think that's the town that had all the Mothman sightings when the bridge collapsed In the 1960s. I remembered the Mothman movie and also remembered that that movie was not shot in point pleasant so now I was curious... What did point look like? What does the statue look like??? Well, passed the exit unable to see it or stop on my way to North Carolina, but on my way back to Ohio I certainly found time to stop. The exit be fore Point Pleasant i had some weird unexpected instances that caused a delay. I was to arrive around 4 but I arrived in Point Pleasant close to 5 pm. It took a bit to figure out where to go. Point pleasant is NOT big but it was a bit confusing. I arrived to the museum right after the owner locked up and left. But I did see this statue next to the museum. I have to say, I envisioned the statue to be on a round park. It was tucked between two streets. I also didn't expect it be so very, very shiny. I always envisioned the Mothman to be this dark tall creature but this is a very shiny almost new looking statue. It looks like nothing that I envisioned in my imagination to me. The statue looks like if you took the creature from the land of the lost, put them in half a Batman suit, added wings and chicken feet... oh and a hawk beak. I don't know why I didn't expect them to have massive bird feet. The eyes are creepy very red. That said, it was fun to see and wish i saw the museum too

The man. The Moth. The legend.

I'm still haunted by the silhouette of The Mothman, but I felt less threatened standing around his motionless statue in Point Pleasant. I'm sure this town would be more pleasant without the local conspiracy theories surrounding the beast, but without the history, I reckon this town would have no point. It was interesting to see an array of canned goods outside the statue, and legend has it that the open-world game Fallout 76 is brainwashing young human beings about an upcoming apocalypse. Rubbish. The Mothman's workout routine must be insane. How does he juice up his tanker tush and carve his waffle abs while standing there...dead? Hopefully I can find the answers at the upcoming festival. I want to dip my body in chrome, grow tattered-up angel wings and turn my eyes red to one day take his place.

Today we had a wonderful full day plan, that situated around some local sites and activities. We started out with a few local Christmas Bazaars and then went to Point Pleasant, WV to check out the Urban Legion of the Mothman. Kayla Beth Fields and grandkids, Saige & Deacon Hunt, picked me up about 9am. The kids had never heard about the Mothman, so we wanted to share with them the Urban Legion. The Mothman state is FREE to enjoy and take your pics or Mothman selfies!

Beautiful little town in WV along the river. Stop on by the cool statue and have some coffee at the cute shop next door.

Cool little small town attraction with a museum next door and interesting history. Make sure to check out the river walk too

You can read the history of the Mothman in the other reviews, I have nothing new to add. It is a beautifully crafted statue in a sleepy little West Virginia town that now gets some tourism thanks in part to a movie that came out in 2002. I came out because I was in Kentucky and needed to visit friends in Va and it was a neat little side trip. it is free to visit, but the museum is not.

It's the man, the myth, the legend! It's a fun statue of Mothman and for some reason the ass is very detailed, but it's a great photo opportunity for solo travelers or for big groups. It is smack dab in the middle of the downtown area and is surronded by more Mothman information, stores and fun tidbits.

The Mothman status is really beautiful. The plaque tells the Legend of The Mothman and a mention to the creator of the piece. The Mothman status is easily accessible and a photo op. It was our first stop on our stroll down Main Street.

This is a statue of the infamous moth man. He is a legendary creature mythological creature that haunts this little town. I did some research on the moth man and wash them off man movie with Richard Gere from 2002. It's a very interesting concept in this little city has Bangtan on the phenomena behind it and has a statue in a museum it's pretty neat

That creepy cryptid looks pretty demonic in a lot of the ways he's represented in here, especially with those glowing red eyes. Mothman Museum is cheekily billed as The World's Only Mothman Museum and you quickly see why. You have to be hardcore into the lore to actually be impressed by this small museum and not be seeing this at least a little tongue in cheek. It's all in good fun, though, except for the Silver Bridge collapse which is actually pretty harrowing and tragic. Admission is only $5 and if you really want to make it worth your while you can sit and watch the entire documentary in the little viewing area. I was pretty wore out from the road and was trying to make Akron by nightfall so I only watched a little. I meant to see if it's on YouTube just like I've been meaning to watch The Mothman Prophecies. Ha! Predictive text suggested Propaganda instead of Prophecies. That's pretty funny. The gift shop is almost half as big as the museum and it's really the highlight, easily outshining a bunch of old newspaper clippings. All the Mothman fanart is fun, too, but it seems like it's really to whet your appetite for buying souvenirs. And there's actually two or three other shops in town selling Mothman t-shirts. An old coworker I knew had 2 Mothman t-shirts and I thought that was so excessive but then I saw a design I liked better than the one I bought her in another shop and was tempted to do the same thing as Zach. I didn't but I kind of get it now. The statue outside has a separate listing here and I gave it a separate review but I will say it's so flipped out and such a powerful photo/selfie magnet that it does make this small kitschy museum seem more worthwhile. My theory is that the teens who originally encountered Mothman were time travelers who saw a future Point Pleasant that was utterly devastated, more abandoned than Gary or East St. Louis. So they came back to the 60s and came up with Mothman so at least this town would have something to hang its hat on. So there would at least be this museum, a couple gift shops, Mothman indoor black light mini-golf next door (!), etc. They went back to the future and said their work was done and that's probably the best that can be done for Point Pleasant. That's my Tale from the Cryptid and I'm sticking to it.

It has displays on the Mothman sightings from the '60s that basically put this tiny town on the map . It also has some coverage on the Silver Bridge collapse including newspaper clippings, eyewitness accounts and quite a few props from The Mothman Prophecy movie which was fun to see up close . The giant mothman hanging from the ceiling in the hallway was probably the most fun we had inside the museum . If you're into cryptids you'll probably love it, although I will admit I was hoping for a little more. Still, the price is right and they have a nice little gift shop in the front as well. Most importantly for me, the shop and the museum are dog friendly. It also stays very busy. We visited on a random weekday in winter and the shop got so packed that at one point that we ended up stepping outside because our dog is small and I was genuinely worried she'd get stepped on. We sat on the bench out front for a while and listened to the Fallout soundtrack play through the speakers. Honestly, that little break and the ambiance of this cool little town set to some pretty groovy tunes might have been one of my favorite parts of the whole stop. When you visit, don't forget to cross the street and check out the iconic Mothman statue. In the opposite direction you will find the point pleasant trading company which also has lots of treasures to check out as well. The gift shop here is decent on its own and I did find a couple of shirts that I really wanted but I was low on cash at that particular moment, so I figured I would order them online later. It turns out that they have some merchandise here that is exclusively licensed by Bethesda to the museum, so buying it from the museum or ordering it from the museum and having it shipped is the only way to get it anyway. Learn from my mistake and just put everything you want on a credit card. Great advice right?
