Loving the brass buckets filled with yummy goodness

It's just like visiting your favourite uncle at Christmas time. Our softball team takes over this restaurant once a year to celebrate our victories of the season. Even though we are quite loud and make speeches and give out lots of trophies eg: the person most likely to give the captain a cigarette in his hour of need, they still welcome us with open arms and fantastic service. Just like most Londoners I know, I always order the same thing when I go out for a curry, Sag Paneer. So it's hard to comment on lots of the dishes. However, it's the best Sag Paneer in town and I should know as I've had a few. This place is super clean, gives great advice if you don't have a favourite, really attentive and are keen to get the smallest of details just right. Maybe they have got it down to a fine art as the rumour is that it's the oldest curry house in London, opening in the early 1950s. Judging by the amount of locals that popped in to pick up a takeaway - this place's reputation goes way beyond our softball team. The boys toilet has white fittings and the girls has pink, this makes me happy. They also serve up those big bottles of Tiger Beer which also makes me happy.

I came here by accident, two hungry and tired tourists, out walking and voila. The place is small, they say its the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK...thought I went to that somewhere else too? There was a large group of obnoxiously loud students in the place which really made it semi-miserable until they left as its a small place. I tried the chicken shashlick masala which was VERY good, perfectly cooked veggies and nice spices...the other items dahl soup, misti kodu, cheese nan were a-ok. Servers were very nice as well.

We came here on a Sunday night. The food was delicious, especially the butter chicken and chicken tandoori. Excellent value also!

Note: Yay! Yelp finally launches in London! I originally wrote this prior to Yelp's new UK…read moreconnection and had to list it with my SF reviews... So happy it can now be in its real home! It is still at the top of my list of favorite Indian restaurants!!! This is the best Indian restaurant in England, and my all-time favorite Indian place in the world. When you're in London, you'll definitely visit Harrod's or the Victoria & Albert Museum, and when you do, you'll be starving afterward. So head on over to Shaheen and let them totally spoil you for any other Indian food! My friend Damien recommended this place, and we visited on our first day in London, then re-visited several times during our first stay there. Now, every time I'm in London, I go, just to reconfirm the total deliciousness of their food. It truly is memorable. (Thanks for the recommendation, Damien!) The service is gracious. The interior is romantic and very Indian. Prices are fair. I always compare Indian food by how the Chicken Tikka Masala rates -- it seems like a good common denominator that is on almost every Indian menu. Shaheen's outshines every other restaurant I've sampled. You can't go wrong with their other menu items -- we've tried almost everything. Also, note that when you specify "Hot" that's what you'll get -- expect the steam to come out of your ears! P.S. Check the website for map and directions. The phone number is: +44 (0) 20 7581 5329. Bottom line: Not worth the money for mediocre food and poor service…read more Food: 2/5 Environment: 3/5 Service: 2/5 Value: 1/5 I had the Chicken Biryani and the Chicken Tikka Marsala. The Biryani rice was soggy and the chicken tasted old. It also took 45min to get. After the long wait, the order we finally received was wrong. Turns out I was not the only one bothered by the extremely poor service-- two other table also complained. The restraint only had three tables full to begin with... There is much better tasting Indian food in London at a way better price. This place had high reviews-- maybe a management or chef change? Regardless-- it's Not recommended.

We found this place on Zagat and were quite intrigued with the amazing review they received (24 out…read moreof 30 for cuisine). Upon arrival we found a lovely location right next to the Thames in the southern part of Chelsea. The decor was modern and comfortable, and the vibe was very casual. We got seated promptly and service was quick. After an appetizer of poppadums and various sauces, we got the prawn curry and mixed game skewers with mushroom curry. The shrimp was fair, but not amazing. As for the second entree, the meat served on the skewers (rabbit, venison, quail and pheasant) was not grilled as advertised; it came out as lukewarm, nondescript stewed bits on toothpick thin sticks. Stew on a stick? What a crappy idea. The meat was served on top of a roti that was soggy and soft. Very unappealing. The mushroom curry was nice enough, but not a saving grace for the meal. Based on what we were served, the chef seemed more concerned with adding exotic ingredients on the menu rather than creating a tasty meal. The food we were served was not as cohesive or enjoyable as it should have been, especially for a place with this good a reputation. In the end, we left quite unsatisfied. Disappointing experience over all. Not even close to being worth the 15-20 pounds an entree they charge.
