When you first walk in, there are two kiosks where you can place your order and you may walk up to the cash register and order with a live person. We chose to order at the register and the employee was very friendly and explained the whole Motomaki process, which we appreciated. The process on how-it-works is located on the wall, but we both prefer in-person customer service. We ordered three rolls and one fountain drink for a total of $57 with tax.... I thought that was high for what we got. The service was fast and the ingredients were fresh. I'm glad I got the sauce on the side. My husband didn't care for the rolls because he said the seaweed was too fishy and he described them as "seaweed burritos". The rolls fell apart after we took off the aluminum foil. Also, just an FYI: three rolls were too many and we both would have been fine with one each but now we know for next time. My order wasn't accurate -- I had to go up to the counter to ask for missing items that I had paid to add (edamame and a side of jalapeño aioli), but I was given them without a fuss. We ordered the mochiko chicken wrap with soy paper, salmon curry wrap with nori and miso soup. The miso soup was delicious, and arrived in a little covered bowl to keep it warm. The mochiko chicken was a standout, very flavorful and crisp. The salmon curry was a little bland, but great balance of veggies and salmon. OK SO MOTOMAKI IS MY FAV USUALLY BUT.... it was my birthday and i had a free entree reward and i was so excited to eat motomaki on my special day. i got my normal order which is hawaii salmon poke so good like. but i opened when i got home and it WAS YELLOWTAIL. and there were rice things in there and no bacon to be seen. they remade it for me but i had to come back. the remake was delicious but the hassle really had me heated. i'll be back on god but i was very disappointed in my experience today. read more

I've been to motomaki a handful of times; a few in Boulder and then one at another location near Colorado Mills. Each time I've gone has been pretty consistently good. Parking at both locations can be kind of annoying, as the lots are shared with many other places to eat, and the lunch rushes can get a little crazy. Taking that into account, though, you can plan accordingly. Both locations are adequately staffed, clean, and the vibe has always been pretty laid back. I've not had a bad experience at either location in any capacity. Everyone's always super nice, meals are ready pretty quick, and most importantly, the food is always hot and fresh (or just fresh if you're getting something that's meant to be cold lol). The menu is pretty customizable as well, so there are a ton of options for any palate and the prices are fairly reasonable. They've also added self-checkout screens in the recent past which allows visitors to order themselves rather than going up to the counter. With this new addition, checking out has become quicker since there are more options for folks to order. read more

They have tons of customization options, online ordering or a kiosk OR a human will take your order, never missed a modification to my bowl and always provided large portions. Either way you choose, they have fresh ingredients, tasty combinations, and endless customization. The bowls seem like more food for your money, but that's probably just the quantity of rice. 29th Street isn't the most atmospheric place, but the decor brings modern touches of Japan. You order on the computer, they're made in a few minutes, and they call you. This location is always super clean, has friendly staff, and the food is always tasty. The food is always fresh, and portioned decently. I always get the Hawaiian Salmon bowl or burrito. This is a great grab and go or quick meal spot in Boulder if you're feeling like something heavier than a roll of sushi but also you don't want to feel stuffed. There is shared parking with other shopping and food spots so during the lunch or dinner hours it can get pretty busy around, but you can always order ahead and pick up. We've had places like this for over 4 decades, albeit not big sushi burrito ones, but it's not easy handheld friends because it falls apart from the nori being soaked and chewy. So it's messy, but I still like it than their basic bowls. It's a bit over priced these days and you see shrinkflation. As their burrito sushi has Shrinken lol we just came here for a snack since we ate early and I wanted to so our weekly Trader Joes shop in liberal hippy tree hugging city. I usually avoid this city like the plague since food is sub par and has gone down hill after the lockdowns. Over all, every now and then it's ok to get, but much better places out there. read more

Honestly, we never had a bad experience here. I love their taro chips, and its a place where there is something for everyone in my family. My kid loves their make-your-own-roll, my husband will just eat anything on the menu and me as a vegetarian who doesn't eat sushi?? I love their impossible meat with teriyaki sauce bowl. The flavors are great, and the portions are just enough. We have this place on regular rotation in our Boulder places we dine from. Their online menu and pickup make it especially easy to order and grab-n-go which is really helpful. We will always be returning to this restaurant as long as its in business. read more

Very tasty vegetarian sushi burrito. This interesting place is near downtown and clean and new inside. I like the decor and upbeat music. It looks new and has cool pictures of Japan. Very well themed. I got the veggie burrito with tofu. The sauce was perfect on the rice, and the temporah vegetables were perfectly fried. The tofu was tasty and well cooked. Motomaki is one of my favorite places for togo. It is quick and contactless. You literally order from a screen once you walk-in, or you can order online. They also have patio tables outback! Everything is sooo good. I prefer the bowls over the burritos/rolls. My go to is the hamachi crunch bowl. It has the perfect amount of rice, asparagus, crunchy onions, yellowtail and aioli and ponzu drizzled on top. So dang good. I also have to get an app of salmon tarp poke each time. Just like they have at halal but instead they give you tarp chips. This place is amazing for fast casual togo. I'm not sure what is going on with this location, but it consistently falls short of what I expect when I get food from Motomaki. I always get the Hawaiian poke bowl with extra sauce and bacon. My guy gets the nacho tuna. When I come to the Boulder location, the ingredients are either overcooked or uncooked. The bacon was so tough it actually hurt my mouth to chew it. The sauce was bland with no seasoning. And his bowl? Oh my goodness, everything was awful. Except our raw meat and the rice. Those were fine. We went in to complain and the lady behind the counter fought my dude on everything, even though we had the food right there to prove what we were saying, and was so rude. Like nasty rude. I'm going to stick to the other location only- the food is fabulous there. And the customer service is bomb. read more

I have been to Motomaki many times and had not been there in about a year or so where I use to go once a week. This time around I did not have the lunch I expected which I have had there so many times before. I really enjoy their Hamachi (yellow tail) crunch bowl but this time around it was not up to what I expect from their food. Firstly I had an issue with the person taking my order who simply did not understand the menu and had to get the manager for me to simply put a sauce on the side.. hmmm? I received my food and there was not nearly the hamachi that I had received in the past. I had 5 little pieces which was very disappointing. I am not sure what is happening with the restaurant as I know many restaurants are having difficulties but this was not a good lunch experience. I came in tonight a little bit before 9 PM to try it out for the first time and there were a lot of people working. Because they began their closing procedures soon after I sat down, a couple awkward things happened. The soda fountain was out of ice, and three of the employees were right near me when I asked for more. I even waited a while after they told me they would refill it. Never happened. I had wanted iced tea, but I decided to settle for Pepsi since I paid $3 for it. Who even likes Pepsi, am I right? Eventually, every chair around me was turned over on the tables, and I was surrounded by workers cleaning up as if there weren't still patrons in the dining room. I just felt like I was being forced out slowly...as if they were already closed and waiting on me to leave. I ordered sushi burrito online for me and my boyfriend's anniversary but instead we received curry salmon BOWL. We decided to just eat the bowl and not reorder. After he finished the bowl, he said he started feeling sick. I was feeling sick as well. He threw up three times and went to the washroom more than 5-6 times. It was his first meal and I've read some reviews on yelp and google. It seemed like other people had a similar experience as well with the bowls. The problem was mentioned multiple times but nothing was done about the concern. I don't think they use fresh ingredients. Please be careful. Giant sushi rolls wrapped in foil like burritos with interesting combinations of ingredients. I enjoyed my banh mi roll, although I wish I had ordered it as a bowl, I think the pork is not the best choice for a sushi roll. But the shrimp tempura worked perfectly as a roll, I guess at least for me, seafood and/or just veggies go better with nori than pork.
