After dinner the rain had stopped and some went up to the barn to dance, others went to chill in a small shed very comfortably appointed with cushy couches and chairs; we hit the boogie barn for another glass of wine, then strolled down to the campfire on the shore of the small pond. A waterside gazebo was nearby if you wanted some shelter. My main quibble came as we were walking out. There are no lights in the parking area and it was a little difficult to find the row we'd parked in. As well lit as the area around the buildings was, couldn't one light be put in the parking area? Still, a very pleasant night, and I'd be happy to return.

I was initially reluctant to use a wedding/event planner for several reasons - wanting to save money, being fairly crafty/creative myself and having confidence in handling on my own details in pursuing something less "traditional", and being pretty resourceful. Shortly into the planning process, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought. I then met Mandi Buckland of Element Design. What sealed the deal was her calm energy and diversity in events she's worked on (weddings, parties, festivals, including "green" fests/events). She was great in identifying several unique wedding location options in Southwest and Southern MI, including a fabulous barn, a garden, and a super cool lodge (we ended up at a mansion in Holland). When I asked her to design the invitations with a "modern art nouveau theme" using a peacock to match the theme of a mansion built in the early 1900s (not easy!) - she provided several fabulous sample designs within a short period of time. Our final invitations were really unique and fun! After our invites went out, I received an unexpected amount of of great feedback ("I love your invitations!" "They are so unique," etc.) and I could tell they made people look forward to the wedding. I felt like Mandi figured out my sense of my style quickly, and she was able to identify options that fit that were creative, cost-conscious (extra plus) and didn't compromise on quality. At the same time she was working with me, she was helping a friend design invitations for a wedding at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, so her range of work can be simple, arty/less traditional, to more traditional/upscale. Pretty impressive! Mandi is professional, efficient, super creative, and I would recommend her to anyone in Chicago, Detroit (or anywhere in between the two cities in Michigan or Illinois) who is planning a wedding in Southwest or Southern Michigan!

I cannot be happier about making the decision to go with Special Moments for my wedding…read morephotographs! I was referred to Special Moments by my venue, and decided to check them out. Initially, upon my decision of going with Special Moments, I met with Patrick A. in the office, and he was just super nice, and awesome about explaining every aspect of the process to me, finding a package that fit my budget and needs, and he even was nice enough for giving me a little deal because of my husband being active duty in the military. He did not have to do that, and that's what really cemented my decision to go with them. Carrie B. was my photographer and she was great about keeping in contact with me about any and every question and concern I had during the entire process. She was super adaptable to the style of photos I wanted. The family photos were super pose-y, which is great for frames and family, and then she took AMAZING photos that were more candid and unconventional, which my husband, friends, and I prefer. She had a great personality, which was HUGE for me, because my husband and I are so awkward and uncomfortable being in front of the camera, so she made us feel less nervous with jokes and directing us where to put what appendage and how to tilt our heads and constantly telling me, "Jenni, oh my gosh stop crossing your eyes!! haha!" We even ran into a little situation right before the reception where there was another wedding's family blocking a staircase that is used for photographs. Not sure why, but the family became very rude with the wedding party when we asked them if we could borrow the staircase for 5 minutes for pictures. They became aggressive and started insulting my wedding party, and I was beside myself, because honestly, what a nightmare. Carrie B. came to the rescue and politely confronted the family and explained why we needed the staircase. She just took charge! And they listened! I was like...woah, okay, you go girl! I was totally impressed. Carrie also worked with my DJ to make sure the wedding schedule happened in such a timely manner that I did not have to worry about going over my time limit, and paying for an extra half hour or so to get all the major shots I wanted. She just kept things going right along! After the wedding, I was constantly in touch with Kristi in the office via phone and email. Yes, I am a control freak, and I had a million requests and questions, but she was always such a pleasure to talk to, and she made everything happen! She always responded to my emails within minutes, and gave me peace of mind. I got my online proofs within days. My prints, High Resolution Disk, and Coffee Table Book are all to DIE FOR, and I had them in my hands within a month after my wedding!! Kristi and I were constantly joking about which pictures to select for the prints and books because I had so many good shots to choose from, I swear I couldn't have done it without her help.
