But their kindness and breakfast and midday aperitif preparations made me forget any language barriers. I could not have possibly asked for a better experience in Sancerre. I went from Paris to the central Loire Valley to Sancerre, and had the best time in Sancerre due to this hotel and the wines (of course). Every morning they prepared a continental breakfast of croissants, varied pastries, bread, yogurts, jam, coffee and orange juice. I believe most things were homemade, if not then sourced locally as it was very fresh. Breakfast was served on the terrace with best ambiance, see below. Also, we had guests at breakfast: Calypso and Charly, their adorable dogs. In the afternoons/early evening, they prepare a bottle of wine and cheese for you on the terrace. Mind you, if you are like me and go for the vineyards then you will be absolutely overflowing with wine at this point. Key to pace yourselves, people. Ambiance: The most important part of this experience was the views. I mean the flowers and rolling hills were just amazing. I felt like I was honeymooning simply by looking outside my window every morning. I am deathly afraid of bees and there were quite a few there but even so, I could not help but relax with the unbelievable beauty of the surroundings. Not to mention, I sprained my ankle my first night in France but the pain was imperceptible while I was here. It was not incredibly expensive or cheap but it's worth every euro. Download a translation app, save some money and fly over to France just for this visit. Trust me. Note: they do take credit cards but their online booking is outdated.

The internet is non existent, you must bring your own internet for France. You can get it easily with SIM card at local Orange. There is no AC, so expect it to get hot in the summer. The room is super small but it opens to the town square which is superbly lovely in the evening. Don't expect much out of this very French hotel, but do feel that you are part of the locals when you enter and exit the hotel and drop off your keys to the room at the front counter. To the left of the stairs is a nice restaurant, at which you can get the traditional prix fixe meal for very little money. It's also incredibly convenient as it's in the town square. A few places down you can get your charcuterie for the day. There is a very small but functional city Carefour down the street, which you could load up on the picnic items. I get the coffee by a cafe across the street. It's very convenient and not too expensive. There is a very cool coffee shop next the bridge down the street, and every summer there is a frog cook out. Yes, you heard me right, frog cook out! It's not for your typical American tourists but if you want to see Burgundy, this town is good as any and this is hotel is as good as it gets for a town of 3000 people. Plus you can vsit me there. I often go to the city Carefour and buy a bottle of Beaune wine, which is a fraction of what you'd pay here in San Francisco, and yes the hotel does provide you with a complimentary cork screw to open your bottle with, for that I have decided to upgrade the rating from 3 to a 4. Not to mention, you cannot get better local terrine and cheese than what the restaurant has to offer. It's a short walk to the local cathedral, which is a sight in and of itself. Walking up the hill is better than riding your bicycles. There is a train station nearby as well, across the canal, from Clamecy to Paris Gare Lyon or Paris Bercy, train departs multiple times a day. All within walking distance from the hotel. Of course if you have a car do drive up to Vazelay Abbey which is a world heritage site, absolutely not to be missed. My favorite thing to do is to chill in the room after it's dark. After walking around town's cobble stone paths, I lean out to the balcony and look down to the square and look out to the canal. It's quiet and peaceful, It's where you want to be.

The rooms were basic and no-frills, but eminently charming with lovely street views of downtown Corbigny. The staff were incredibly patient and accommodating despite my speaking no French, and the price for two rooms over five days, daily morning croissants and coffee, plus a magnificent dinner came to just 800 euros, less than I had previously been slated to pay for a much worse lodging situation. In the event the daek-haired woman (seemingly one of only two or three hotel staff on hand) who smiled patiently while I agonizingly typed out questions or comments on my translation app reads this review, tu es très gentille et très jolie. Additionally the restaurant in the courtyard, Le Cepage, was fabulous - I had the seared trout with coconut, which was easily one of the best-cooked pieces of fish I've ever encountered.

After returning from france my husband and I have been on a search for red wine sauce to rival their sauce ( had it with the poached egg as well as chicken). We haven't come close! We knew we were in the right place when we were the only non- french guests and only people under 50. Not cheap but not expensive. Do the tasting menu and load up on the red wine sauce!
