Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence reads as one of those large, quietly impressive civic burial grounds that tells you a lot about the town without ever trying to. It dates to the late nineteenth century and today covers a substantial footprint on the west side of town. Large enough to hold generations of local families as well as several figures of regional significance. The Kansas Guidebook and Find-A-Grave point out the two most visited and famous graves. Playwright William Inge (1913-1973) and Dr. George Tann (1825-1909), the African American physician who treated the Ingalls family for malaria in 1870 and later practiced in Independence. One of Mount Hope's most defining features is the remarkable two-mile limestone retaining wall built by the WPA in 1934, complete with sunburst designs worked into the stone. It gives the cemetery a sense of craftsmanship and permanence that stands out. The cemetery is operated municipally and feels both well-kept and historically grounded. The check was cashed and I thought everything was taken care of. We don't live anywhere near, so checking on the stone wasn't an option. When my aunt posted pictures of floral displays at the cemetery a full six months later, there was no stone. Allen Monuments' only response was "Maybe the granite was backordered. We'll get it set next Saturday." Do not do business with people who would pray on a family after a loss.
