    Mount Madonna County Park

Mountain of Youth ±4,600-acre park located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and situated between Morgan Hill and Watsonville. The Good: *Archery range *Camping available *Visitor Center *Picnic areas *Over fourteen miles of trails with some nice loops *Redwoods! *Trails are mostly shaded and in decent shape. *If you're a banana slug fan then this is the place for you. Even in the dead of summer we will still see at least a few of these iconic mollusks. *Restrooms (see map) The Meh: *$6 entrance fee but at least they accept credit card. The Ugly: *Some of the uphills here are a real wicked pissah! Just remember when you go downhill for a while, that eventually you're gonna have to come back up that hill... Conclusion: Great park with lots of amenities and some great nature.

What a beautiful place to camp! The redwoods are stunning. I arrived and was greeted by a friendly and helpful park ranger at the entrance. I drive easily to my camp site and set up camp. The spots are set in a way that give you descent privacy from your camping neighbors. I am already planning on another booking soon!

Just went camping here, it was amazing! Took my toddlers and we hiked some of the meadow trail and it was such an amazing sight! The weather was a bit chilly but the sun was warm. Weret too many bugs which was great!

I must admit I felt like a true explorer here. I didn't have cell service and was unable to use my all trails app, so a real map it was! We hiked the Meadow loop trail which intersected with the Blue Springs trail. Fining the trail starting point and where to park was a little confusing, but once we were on the trail it was marked really well. Each post we came to was numbered, so we were able to follow along on the map and ensure we were going the right direction. We came a couple weeks after some heavy rain so the trail was very wet and had quite a few downed trees. We were able to climb over most of the trees, but one covered so much of the trail that we had had to cut through the brush to get around it. I highly recommend picking up a map on your way in because there are many trails and it could be pretty easy to get lost if you don't know exactly where you're going. Entrance fee is $6, as it is with most if not all count parks in SCC. Plenty of different areas to park and begin your hike. Trails range in length and moderation.

Mount Madonna is a redwood park in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is the perfect getaway from the Bay Area as it is only 45-50 minutes away from San Jose. Really close to winery's if you want to drop by and pick up wine on the way for your camping trip. It's close to civilization, but just far enough away too. We had spotty service, but you're there for camping and to get away, so that's fine. BUT if you really can't get away, you might be able to find some places with cell service. And there's a plug in the main bathroom if you really did want/need to charge your phones. We camped in Huckleberry and our reserved area was the gigantic one that is actually meant for about 100 people that is also the closest to the park entrance. Definitely bigger than our group of about 15-20 people needed, but it was amazing. We were really close to the main bathrooms and public showers. Cleaned daily, showers are free and are on a timer. Our campsite had a fire pit, picnic tables, bbq grill pit, a water spout that even had a holder for your soap, plenty of room to setup camp. Even though we were close to the main bathrooms, we did have 3 porta-potties for if you need to go in the middle of the night or don't care to walk out of your campsite. Rangers were really friendly and helped us decide what hiking trail would be great for our kids. We found out they have yurts and also offer RV camping. We camped in June, so it was pretty hot during the day, but there's plenty of shade to stay cool.

I grew up in Gilroy Ca.. Mount Madonna was our back yard. It is a beautiful park. The trees, plants, animals. Wild deer running around the trails.. The trails are miles to your needs. Plenty of great clean air hiking the mountain. You are in a little altitude so you can feel it in your lungs. They got the horseback trails and camping available. Next time I go up. I promise some good pics. But for now take my review and check out their website. The hiking is what I did more of. They got those slopes, hills and 30, 40, 45, 60 degree angles and and some pretty cool deep dark forest land. Almost feels like you in a movie set for Lord of the Rings, Underworld, Robin Hood.. It will work out your heart and lungs and give your brain some good oxygen. They are on top of the Mountain and when you are leaving the park you can either go towards the beach or back into the valley. Kind of gives you that choice. Right? or Left? where do you want to go. East or West. Yelp it out and see what you think.

Nice views! Lots of incline on the trail we did, but it was a good hike overall. Benches and some shade before the morning fog burned off.

    Mount Madonna Meadow Trail Loop

My boyfriend discovered this park via AllTrails when we were looking for an area to hike near Gilroy. I highly recommend the 2.4 mile Mount Madonna Meadow Trail Loop if you are looking for an intermediate trail with views. AllTrails lists this loop as an easy one, but this trail isn't the simplest as many parts were quite steep going both uphill and downhill. It is a great workout for anyone who isn't in the greatest shape, but is working on that New Year's resolution! There are restrooms, mostly portable, throughout the park. Day passes are $6 per vehicle and they take credit card which is a huge plus. If you are looking for a particular hiking trail, there should be enough cell reception to utilize Google maps to get you to the start of your trail. We arrived around 4:30pm on a Saturday and it wasn't crowded at all. Highly recommend if you're looking for an unique and not-so-crowded hike during COVID!

This is a beautiful and well maintained park. Great hiking trails amongst the big trees. The restrooms were clean. We hiked up the ridge trail which will provide a moderate workout to reach the top. Didn't encounter many people on this day. But, there were some younger hikers shouting out to each other which disrupted the peacefulness of the forest. Otherwise, listening to the wind blowing through the trees was awesome. Most other hikers were respectful, but please remember to wear your mask when you encounter other hikers.

Mt Madonna is so beautiful! I'm so happy that i just live 15 mins away from it! See pictures of what you can expect :) There is a parking fee of $6. Nothing to the nature therapy this county park will give you! Tips: it's up in the mountain and can get pretty cold up here so layer up! Note: There's camping, will have to let my friends know so we can try it out!

    Valley View #3 Campground

Mount Madonna is an amazing redwood park in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is the perfect getaway from the Bay Area as it is only 45-50 minutes away from San Jose. My husband and I recently camped here for two nights. We stayed in the Valley View #3 Campground. This is a very nice campsite and had all the essentials- food locker, fire pit, picnic tables, and plenty of room to set up camp. This campground had one bathroom, however, this bathroom does not a shower. The closest shower to this campground is near the main entrance of the park next to the Valley View #1 campground. When we arrived, the ranger at the gate was very friendly. She provided us very accurate directions on how to get to the campground and even sold us some firewood. We weren't even thinking about fires, but I am happy she offered the idea to us and we were sold. I can't remember the exact price, but I think the firewood is around $13/box, and it is sold by a ranger at the entrance of the park. On the 2nd day of our trip, we did a lovely 7 mile trail run. The Valley View #3 campground is really close to the trail to get to the Giant Twins. The Giant Twins are two massive trees in the park that are gated off because they have been around since the American Revolution in 1776. We then proceeded to take the Giant Twins trail back to the Sprig Trail, where we went on the Blackhawk trail, to the Ridge Trail, and then back on the Sprig trail to our campsite. All these trails were amazingly beautiful. The trails were about 99% covered and for the most part downhill. The only steep uphill parts were the beginning of the Sprig Trail. This trail was a 1.5 mile hill of death because it is so steep and strenuous. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed these trails and would defiantly come out here again to enjoy more of Mount Madonna's trails and camping. We camped in late March so it was still pretty cold and we even got some rain! If were to camp again, we would come back in the summer months for warmer weather.

What an absolutely fantastic park! I am genuinely enchanted by its sheer size and the abundance of hiking trails it offers. My favorite time to visit is during the fall and winter seasons. There's something magical about the park during these months, especially around 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, just before dusk. The atmosphere becomes incredibly mysterious, shrouded in a captivating blanket of fog that adds an enchanting touch to the surroundings. I can't help but fall in love with it every time I visit. If you're looking for a place that embodies the very essence of natural beauty and tranquility, this park is an absolute gem!

If you're looking for an easy hike in a secluded coastal redwood forest , the Giant Twins Trail is a good one. It's a 1 mile out- in trail across from the Valley View 3 campground. We had the trail all to ourselves. The trail is shadowed by the canopy of giant Coastal Redwood trees so it's a bit dark , nevertheless beautiful. Trail rating: 4/5 Humans : 0 Wildlife: 0 Stroller friendly: No ADA compliance: No Wildflowers: Foxgloves, popcorn flowers

Ask the Community - Mount Madonna County Park

    How long is the hike?

There are actually many miles of different intersecting trails some like the Sprig Lake trail that goes from the Sprig turnout parklot to the lower campground area and can be continued in a big loop back to the same parking area is quite steep in…

Wondering if rangers patrol regularly to ensure safety? It seems very secluded and lonely. How safe is it to overnight camp there?

I've noticed the rangers protroling regularly The only crime that I know of that has happened at Mount Madonna is the car break-ins. Seems safe the nights I was there.

Can i camping there ? and how much i have to pay ? some body know that?

Yes RV, tent, and Yurt camping. prices vary between $26 to $90. gooutsideandplay.org for pricing and to make reservations.

    Is it open?

    Yes.

Can you overnight camp by backpacking in Mt Madonna?

No backpack camping tent, rv, or yurt only.

Does the park sell firewood? If so, where do we go in the park to buy some?

Yes - they sell it at the ranger station.

Are there fire pits at the campgrounds?

Yes all campsites have fire rings with bbq grates.

Is there cell phone reception at the campgrounds?

Yes we had strong signal in camp areas 1 n 2 but group 3 was poor too many trees

Can you swim in Bodfish Creek or are there any swimming holes nearby the campground?

There was no water nearby. Unless you want to drive about 10-20 minutes to the beach. We checked out Monterey Hydrobikes (found on groupon) and rode them around the estuary. Lots of sealife. But none at the campsite (was still a great place to camp).

This is a review of Pinto Lake City Park…read more You may not believe it, but I drove all the way from Costanoa to Downtown (?) Watsonville just to get a breakfast burrito. By the time I got to the market taqueria in question (review upcoming), it was too late for breakfast burritos, so I ordered a regular burrito and then looked for a green spot on the map to eat my (non-breakfast) burrito in peace. That green spot was Pinto Lake City Park, which isn't as green as you believe it will be but which is greener than its surroundings. The park comprises a whopping seventy-eight acres, although seventy of those acres are the southern half of Pinto Lake. The remaining eight acres are mainly the greenish park-looking areas south of the lake and these funny thin strips of land along it southwestern and -eastern shores. There's a different park farther north called Pinto Lake County Park; I didn't drive that far, but if you're having any kind of gathering, make sure everyone knows which of the two Pinto Lake Parks you're actually visiting. Strangely, Pinto Lake City Park is within the city limits of Watsonville even though it's far from Watsonville. How's that again? Well, the park is an exclave of the City of Watsonville. That is, it's a part of the city that's separated from the rest of the city by a few miles of what I assume is unincorporated Santa Cruz County. If you still don't know what I'm talking about, type "Watsonville, CA" into Google Maps. You'll see that Watsonville has three exclaves: one to the south, one to the west, and this one to the north. OK, enough map-nerding. It was already quite hot by the time I got here, and the lack of trees, especially near the lake-view picnic benches, borders on the criminal. What kind of landscape architecture is that, City of Watsonville? It's not the most beautiful lake, so you wouldn't be blocking anyone's views with more trees lakeside. The main part of the park does have quite a few trees, and it looks like a nice city park that gets lots of use. I didn't use the restroom while I was here, but the buildings are in decent shape, and I saw lots of women using the ladies' room, and that's generally a good sign in terms of restroom cleanliness. The parking lot is huge. Besides the lake itself, there's a basketball court, a baseball diamond, plenty of green open space, and a children's playground, I believe. I was surprised by the number of people shore-fishing in the afternoon, although it was a Sunday, so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised. I probably would have enjoyed myself and my burrito more if I had eaten it at one of the tables closer to the park entrance, rather than near the water. Oh well. I guess if I ever wake up early enough to make it to Downtown Watsonville in time, I'll bring that breakfast burrito and eat it on the other side of the park, where it's greener and there's more shade.
