Somehow, I did not manage to have a coronary climbing up from Lambton Quay to the Mount Street Cemetery. It's quite the climb! At the top of the hill, there is a paved path through the cemetery and I would recommend sticking to that as there are an unknown number of unmarked graves due to the passage of time.
From the sign at the entrance, "It was originally laid out to be used as a Roman Catholic Cemetery, consecrated in 1841. It was mostly fully and closed in 1891 but family plots were used until 1954. The main town cemetery for all other interments in early Wellington was at Bolton Street.
"This is the last resting place of over 1100 Wellington Catholics, including the first priests and nuns, people of many ethnicities from all strata of society, and many children. The graves are often now unmarked, their simple wooden crosses long gone."
