They charged me $685 to replace a wiring connector on the camshaft position sensor. I would hate to think what they would have charged if it were something more involved. Edit: Phil called in response to my review. See the attached invoice. I had already replaced the camshaft position sensor (a ten minute job), which was new. This did not resolve the code, which indicated the connection was intermittent. I had tested the connector with a multimeter, which indicated there was a bad connection at the connector. This was communicated to the service manager when I dropped off the vehicle. The technician stated that there was a broken tab on the camshaft position sensor, and they replaced the brand new part I had just installed. See the attached photo. That the tab could be broken without being filed off is highly suspect. It's a durable part. That the relatively fragile connector was damaged is more credible. In my opinion, as stated to the service manager, it was obviously the part that needed to be replaced. They replaced the connector, which again, I had communicated was the likely issue. They claim to have paid $110 for this part that I can purchase at Napa for $26. So in summary, I paid $685 to have them swap out a $26 connector. I can only conclude they're either dishonest or incompetent. Edit 2: Well Phil, now you're just outright lying. You did not show me the new camshaft position sensor you removed and replaced. Your technician did not perform any diagnostics, and ignored the diagnostic information I provided to you in advance. He just started swapping parts, AND overcharging for the time spent. Even if the sensor needed to be replaced, a $40 part that takes ten minutes to install, to charge me $685 is absurd. read more

Terrible and rude service... on the website it asks what you need done I told them oil pan and back light,I waited 2weeks they charged me 80 bucks to tell me what I already knew...they didn't have the light ready either. At least tell me you checked over the rest of the engine and top off the fluids if your going to do nothing and tell me what I already new.... They got mad at me said I wanted free work done I told them no... don't charge me and tell me what I already know... they said checking over the engine would take to much time... gave me my keys rudely and they parked my car like three blocks away around a corner where I couldn't see it... I went to jiffy lube told me the whole engine check being to long was bs and they topped off my fluids free of charge. But mountain auto has terrible service I'm never going there again and best believe I've told other people to not go there either read more

The one thing I will give Mountain Auto Care without a doubt is their transparency. Start to end every mechanic I talked to was very fair making clear differentiations between what R&M was 100% necessary/not. Pricing is a bit on the higher end, customer service was great, very informative as well. I'm from Texas so I thought I was getting ripped off with my catalytic converter quote, all it took was asking and the mechanic took time to explain the taxes (or laws) that make them more expensive in certain states. I recently moved to Durango and was wondering where I was going to take my C5 corvette. I was reluctant to take it to Chevrolet, and it turns out they no longer repair 'their own vehicles' that are 10 years or older. Fine by me since Corvettes may as well be made by a different company. Anyway, through a series of phone calls, I was referred to Mountain Auto Care. From the moment I spoke to Don on the phone, and later Ed, I was very pleased with their knowledge, professionalism, and honesty. They were polite and listened to what I had to say concerning why I was bringing the car in, and understood where to look for problems. They also kept me informed about the progress and made recommendations. Plus, they got the work done in a reasonable amount of time and their pricing is fair. Also, they went out of their way to pick me up and bring me back when I ended up having to get additional parts and bring the car back in a week later. This was very kind of them considering how busy they are. While traveling in Durango, up from the DFW Metroplex in Texas, our new Chevrolet Silverado started showing the malfunction light. the Chevrolet dealer ran the codes for us and discovered 4 different codes, 3 of which were related to the trailer braking system (we are pulling our 24 ft travel trailer). The Chevrolet dealer could not work on our truck for two week, due to the volume of repairs in their shop. We called our dealer in Texas who suggested we do a hard reset by disconnecting the battery, which I was unable to do. Phil, with Mountain Auto Care took us right in, and performed the rest, correcting the problem. He would not take payment for his work! great guy who helped us in our time of need! It's all about customer service, right? This crew fit us in a day after calling for an oil change. What can you say about an oil change? Not much, but Dan (Dave?) took the time to do a once-over on our honda pilot, just to make sure. We were heading out on the durango train ride early that morning. I dropped the car off with a key and a note with our phone number, and got a call back after the long day that we could come pick it up. Struck up a conversation once we arrived (20 minutes after their closing time) and got the assurance we'd have no trouble with the rest of our trip (back to Iowa) and tips on our next day's travel to mesa verde. Friendly, courteous, helpful and kind. Again, just an oil change, but customer service is what makes or breaks a place. Mountain Auto repair is tops in my book. read more

These people won't be seeing my business again. I had a squeal in my engine, and battery problems. They said my alternator belt was loose due to poor threading on my power steering bracket. They gave me an estimate of over $1,000 depending on how many components they would need to re-thread. I tested the belts myself and didn't believe them. All of this AFTER they charged me over $100 for the diagnosis. I took it somewhere else for a second opinion. For less than $40, they found out my alternator had smoked ball bearings, and fixed the squeal, battery problems, and found and fixed a bad ignition wire for $300. As far as I can tell, they overcharge and mis-diagnose. I won't even wash my car there anymore. I don't know which conclusion would be worse, they're either dishonest or severely bad at their jobs. read more

I got stranded in Durango CO with a coolant leak about half way through a 3300 mile road trip with the family. I have AAA basic coverage and they recommended Mountain Mechanical. These guys were nice enough to fit me in on a late Monday morning. The longest part of the fix was waiting on a part from the Chrysler dealer ship (took over 3 hours to get to Mountain). Don't know why chrysler could not get the part there quicker, but Mountain fixed my vehicle within ~1 hour after receiving the part and I was on my way. Great service and friendly. Here's another tip. Don't buy chrysler products. On a 2010 caravan (~96,000 miles), I've already had to replace: -4 wheel bearings (back wheel bearings went at ~70k miles) -brake calipers on all 4 wheels. -coolant hose ("Y" section failed). read more

Our car's transmission broke down about a 14 hour drive from our home in Austin, Texas. We were so utterly vulnerable, it would have been ridiculously easy to take advantage of us. While on our wonderful vacation at Vallecito Lake our Ford Explorer starting overheating so badly we had to stop. Thankfully we called Mountain Auto Care and talked to Don, the owner. He said he could work us in tomorrow. This was great knowing most car repair shops have appointments, especially in the summer. We dropped the car off right when they opened. Ed, the office manager and master mechanic, called and explained what needed to be replaced and the cost, but said they needed to do a pressure test to be sure they were no other leaks. My husband and I were impressed with Ed calling back before he said they would be done and explaining that there was another leak and he would need to have the Explorer till tomorrow. Ed also went the extra mile and helped us with a car rental and a getting a ride to the rental car company. As we waited, Mike M the technician that worked on our car, even asked if we would like to see the parts he replaced. Ed shared that Mike had worked for the Ford dealership for 4 years before coming to Mountain Auto Care. How wonderful to know we had such an expert working on our vehicle. Needless to say, we picked up our car the next day, we paid exactly the price we were quoted and they even finished it early! My engine was smoking and leaking oil. When I took it to Mountain Mechanical to have it fixed, they told me that the leak was coming from the head gasket, which needed replacing. They quoted me $3,000 or so, including having other parts replaced once the engine was pulled out, and said it would take a week and a half. I searched on the internet, and found that the average cost of replacing a head gasket is about $1,000 nationwide, and so decided to have it done somewhere else. They took all day to have everything put back together, and then charged me $300 for doing nothing to it. I then took it to the dealer in town, and was told that it was not the head gasket, but just an oil cylinder that was leaking. They repaired it for me for $250 in less than a day. Moral of the story: although the guys at Mountain Mechanical were very friendly, they were clearly trying to take advantage of me, perhaps because of my young age. I would not recommend the shop to anyone. read more

Needed a repair on Saturday as we were stranded with a faulty fuel pump on vacation (happened Friday mid-day). Chevy dealership told us nothing could be done until Tuesday). Two other places could not do it until Monday. Dave saved the day. Maybe we paid a bit more (parts and labor) than I would have paid for back home, but they did it quickly and on a Saturday no less so I expected to pay more.
