June 2024: Ryan and his team put-up 600 sq ft of stacked stone. The initial plan was to replace the…read morefireplace with a horizontal fireplace and stone the wall. I got a tad carried away and expanded the project. A stacked stone project is not inexpensive when done right. I was referred to Ryan by C&C Sand & Stone. Bottomline: I just can't imagine better work, period. It is very difficult to find good masonry companies, it's a highly skilled trade. It's the type of work that is "one and done". It isn't like paint, trim work or sheetrock that can be redone. It has to be done right the first time, no room for error. They arrived each day at the expected time. Never an issue. Read on for specific details. C&C spent a good 2 hours over several days helping me narrow down choices. There are a lot of choices. Just a few boxes of stone were left over which was acceptable. You don't want to order "just enough" as you are bound to fall short. Measure twice and cut once, and have extra just in case. Ordering stone takes several weeks. If you under-order, the project will just be delayed plus you need to schedule time for the crew to come back out and re-setup, and that costs time. Just don't go cheap. Mortar and other supplies are easy to get, stone isn't. Next, Ryan came to the house. We discussed the project and he took measurements. Total time about 1.5 hours. He provided excellent advice on the type of stone he'd use and even colors. He has seen a lot more projects than me, I relied heavily on his professional expertise. He even went to C&C and discussed with them the project and his suggestions. When I went back to C&C for a final selection, it was all good. I never felt rushed by Ryan or C&C. The project took 3 weeks. The area was prep 'ed with heavy-duty paper in the hallway for wheeling in product & drop cloths in the main area - I have no carpet or wood floors, just stained concrete and Maroleum - and plastic to close off areas to help mitigate dust. All cutting was done outside. When doing a project like this, just expect a LOT of fine dust no matter what mitigation is done. After each day, he and his crew cleaned up and made the area as tidy as possible. Ryan worked side-by-side; it isn't like he just out-sourced the work. When the project was all done, he suggested his wife's cleaning crew as they do this all time, and he was right. They too were excellent; when I find their card I'll post a review. Posted are "Before" and "After" photos. You won't be disappointed.
