Even so, I got a reasonably priced haircut, and got the shampoo treatment which was quite nice indeed. There was a sole hairdresser on shift on this day, but she did a great job, never getting flustered or rushing and treating customers very well. When he was given the list, he started laughing and said, "Yeah, good luck getting people to pay that for a cut!" Sure, the cuts are at salon prices, so might be a bit out of people's budget, but I think they're probably one of the more reasonable ranges on the market (depending on level of stylist you choose) - and I have always felt that I have gotten my money's worth. Run by Lorenzo, who emigrated from the South of Italy around 40 years ago, Lygon Hairdressers does a killer haircut for $20. Not only do you get a great no nonsense cut, but you also get a close shave of your neck and the back and sides of your hair with a razor blade. Lorenzo is a pretty easy-going bloke who likes a good yarn spun. If you are in the mood for a good chat then he's quite talkative. Similarly, if you are not in the mood for small talk then he's happy to keep quiet too. Plenty of regulars here of all ages is testament to the quality of the cut and the professionalism shown. There are no appointments taken so it's done by walk-ins. It's also only a ten-minute walk from Melbourne uni and if you are a student then you can get a cut for $18.

It is located right next to the main Knoxfield shopping strip and the shops around it are nowhere near it in terms of professionalism or presentation. The salon itself has a beautiful fragrant aroma that is pleasant from the moment you step in to the moment you leave. The staff are really attentive and will greet you promptly after entering. They run on appointment only but always seem to have a space free. They are easy to talk to as well. The last time I went I got a general trim. I have medium length hair and a full fringe and so it was a decent amount of cutting. My hair was washed, cut and blow dried to my specifications exactly and I even got a little head massage during the hair washing stage. It felt so good I would have paid extra for them to keep going! That cost me $55, which is a lot more than I usually pay but the quality was really good and I left feeling quite pampered. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a new hairdresser. The whole salon is clean and fresh and the atmosphere is really relaxed. They don't overbook and the place is never noisy. Give them a go.

To put it plainly, Shibui is very, very "cool". And I do mean that like your mum would use it. The stylists are totally competent as are the colourists, but in the six months I was having my hair done here not once did I have anyone ask me where I got it done. Moreover, unless you're famous or under 22 the staff probably won't warm to you, remember you or give you any sort of service that makes you feel like anything other than a way to fill in their day between cigarettes. They're certainly not rude... but they're also not memorable. But that's okay, because neither are you ;)
