Two years ago, my daughter had major jaw surgery conducted by Dr. Movahed. This surgery was over 6 hours long! Prior to the surgery my daughter had trouble breathing, slept with her mouth open and had an extremely weak chin. The surgery was miraculous! Post surgery, my daughter has no breathing issues, can sleep with her mouth closed and now has a beautiful profile with a chin perfectly proportioned to her face. In fact, her whole face seemed to properly align itself. She's a beautiful young woman. Most amazing was the post op recovery. She experienced very little pain! In fact, we only used about half the prescribed pain pills. Dr. Movahed was a stickler about the dos and don'ts of recovery - something extremely necessary with teenagers. I had to constantly remind my daughter that she just had major surgery and should take it easy with chewing hard foods. That's how remarkable this surgery was. The challenges of the surgery were traveling to St Louis and dealing with the insurance company. Dr. Movahed's staff was very helpful on both accounts. When they say you have to be mentally prepared for jaw surgery, they MEAN IT!   I was terrified to have jaw surgery! So terrified that that I put it off for over 20 years. After needing braces for the third time, I was introduced to Dr. Movahed. I was extremely hesitant to meet with him, and I only agreed to the consultation to appease my orthodontist. To my surprise, I agreed to meet a Dr. who completely change my mind about surgery. From my first visit, until now (9 months post-op), Dr. Movahed and his staff have been EXCEPTIONAL. The entire process was very smooth and I always felt like they truly took the time to get to know me and my needs, which put me at ease during the entire process.   Following my procedure, Dr. Movahed and his nurse practitioner were always a call or text away. I never felt confused about the process nor did I feel neglected in my care or communication regarding the procedure and recovery.   I felt like it was very critical to follow ALL of the "rules" after surgery. I was very intentional about following the instructions, and my recovery went very smoothly. Some days were mentally rough, due to the limited diet you have to follow; however, with Dr. Movahed and my personal support system/family it was doable. Overall, I am beyond grateful that I went through with the procedure. I went into the procedure expecting minor changes to my profile, but the results are far better than anyone anticipated (for the better)! Dr. Movahed is truly more than just a doctor, he is an artist! One that takes pride in his work and is just as invested in each and every patient as they are in themselves.   If you are considering surgery (or highly against it like I was ) I recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Movahed and giving him a chance to walk you through the experience as he did with me. read more

Surgery involving movement of jaws or anything to do with sinus bones is MAJOR surgery with massive chances of negative consequences on one's health. Before anyone touches your turbinate bones in your sinuses, do lots of research on unintended consequences that can occur- especially at the hands of an overzealous surgeon. Make sure you get proper informed consent where the surgeon explains the negative consequences that can occur not just aesthetically and functionally with jaw and teeth but in health. Do not just listen to the pie in the sky promises about oral surgery curing snoring and sleep apnea and improving aesthetic issues or breathing issues. The exact opposite can happen and a far worse result can occur from where you started. Buyer beware of this staff and this surgeon. read more

I have no doubt that Reza Movahed has performed many successful surgeries. Mine, however, was not one. Everyone should understand that even with the most skilled of surgeons , complications do occur. That said, the measure of a great surgeon is how they behave when things go wrong. In this regard, Dr. Movahed is an exceedingly poor surgeon. Dr. Movahed's behavior in dealing with my post-surgical issues has been unprofessional, lacking in transparency, and - frankly - cruel. I can only give Dr. Movahed the worst possible rating for ethics and integrity based on his behavior. A brief account of my case is below. I underwent a double-jaw surgery in June of 2017. While my OSA was resolved, the other functional results were very poor. First, the over-rotation of my mandible has left me with a posterior open bite (all pressure is on my incisors, my molars don't even meet) and inability to engage the muscles necessary to smile. I have a permanent frown and drooping mouth. Second, my mandible is now 7mm in front of my maxilla. I now have a large under-bite and a chin described by another surgeon, Dr. Wolford in Dallas, as "too large for a male". Third, multiple indications of infection appeared a few months after surgery (diffuse eczema, high IGE, spots on x-ray noted by other practitioners) . This took time to diagnose, and within months I was covered with non-stop itch and quarter-sized lesions on my face, back, armpits, groin, shins. Daily prednisone and topical steroids provided only partial relief. After consultation a world-expert on eczema at UCSF (Dr. Howard Maybach) I traveled to St. Louis from the West Coast to have the surgical hardware removed. Although Dr. Movahed assured me after surgery that "all the hardware is gone", a subsequent X-ray showed he had only removed hardware in the maxilla. This, of course, was not the surgical plan agreed upon when I left for St. Louis. My condition continued. When I confronted Dr. Movahed with the x-ray and asked why he had not removed all the hardware, he offered me three nervous, conflicting explanations in one conversation. Though I cannot prove it, I suspect he was hoping to run out the 2-year clock on the statute of limitations. Months later, when I had the mandibular hardware removed, my condition disappeared in a few short weeks. I cannot describe the hell I experienced during the intervening months. While my skin has healed, I am now working with a new team to determine the best course of action to limit the ongoing tooth and attachment damage caused by my current bite. I have had to go to others for diagnosis, as Dr. Movahed has attempted at every turn to disguise or deny the current condition of my bite and jaw alignment. This is a short summary of multiple ethical problems and lack of patient concern once things go wrong.. One final advisement for those who decide to work with Dr. Movahed: Ask for your medical records a month or so after surgery and make sure you are not charged for procedures not performed. I was and it took nearly 3 years for his office to acknowledge the "error" and return my funds. read more

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Movahed!! I cannot recommend him and his team highly enough. He performed my TMJ total joint replacement, upper jaw surgery, and genioplasty with amazing results. I came to him because I'd been suffering from years of horrible TMJ pain, neck pain, chronic headaches and migraines, and a severely restricted airway. After I'd looked everywhere else for answers with no luck, he knew exactly what was going on with me and immediately validated my experience. He answered all of my many questions and put my fears to rest. The surgery went flawlessly and his post-op care has been exceptional. I'm three months post-op now and I can already say it's been nothing short of life-changing. My pain is drastically reduced, my energy is higher, my sleep is more refreshing, and I can actually breathe now! He takes both functionality and aesthetics into account, so while my jaw is functioning better than ever, I am also the most confident and comfortable in my skin I've ever felt. Dr. Movahed is exceptionally kind, considerate, understanding, and professional, as is all of his staff. Dr Reza movahed saved me from a world of neck, back, arm and jaw pain. He replaced my jaw joints and brought both jaws significantly forward (17mm). I woke up 8 hours later and all of the surging pain that ran down my body every day was gone. I had very little pain from the surgery itself. Minimal numbness mostly on the chin. And I had much less swelling than expected which I couldn't believe! Aesthetically my jaw line looks 100x better and even my nose improved since he moved the top jaw forward. True excellence. I cannot say enough about the work Dr. Movahed has done for me. He is truly an extraordinary surgeon. I was looking for a second opinion after my jaw was broken during a wisdom tooth extraction with another oral surgeon. I came across Dr. Movahed. He agreed to see me right away. His office staff and team of assistants were friendly, professional and efficient. By the end of my visit and consultation, I felt good about letting he and his team perform the surgery to repair my jaw. Throughout the entire process, I felt confident that Dr. Movahed and his team were being thorough and thoughtful. They took extraordinary precautions to insure that there were no infections and assured that any chronic illnesses were attended to appropriately. As a result, the surgery was completely successful and there were no complications. I am extremely happy. I think I may even look a little better as well. Due to his attention to detail he may have straightened out some deficiencies that I had from a previous jaw surgery done years ago. I was so excited to have the opportunity to sing Dr. Movahed's praises and I could go on for pages, but I will stop. I will simply say in conclusion, as someone who has had multiple jaw surgeries, I wish I'd have found Dr. Movahed sooner. I was going to wait to write a review until after my full recovery, but when you find a gem, you want to share the experience with the whole world! Why wait ?! My story is long, but to summarize...another specialist in my state recommended me to go to Dr. Movahed for DJS. I did NOT want this surgery, but was told if my jaws don't get moved significantly forward soon, I would continue to have problems with breathing, sleep apnea, grogginess, fatigue, air cut off during sleep, swallowing, amongst a plethora of other problems. I was even told I could have a heart attack at an early age (currently I'm 39). I flew out of state with a mad attitude (doctors are a joke, they are only money hungry, surgery is going to be a nightmare, I'm not going to wake up from anesthesia, etc etc ...). The minute I stepped in the office, observed, got the process rolling with staff, assistants, surgeon...I thought "this is like watching a great sitcom where the doctor office is like a "too good to be true" scenario!! Upon meeting Dr Movahed ....yeah....he's not likeable...he's flat out lovable ! He's got a special anointing on him from God Himself! His character, charisma, kindness & intelligence is ufff...more than I've ever experienced from any doctor. My DJS surgery...huge ordeal & I write this on day 11post-op...but none of my fears ever came to pass...I had ZERO bruising, minimal swelling, & get this...minimal pain. How is that possible with all that was done ? I'm mind-blown. I switched to OTC meds after a few days & I usually can't handle pain well....especially anything face-related. I was unexpectedly emotional with tears of gratitude on today's consult. He just took a tissue himself & dried my cheeks & gave me words of encouragement. That moment will be a forever snap-shot in my memory. The quality of my life has already improved & we are on day 11 , people ! He will hold a special place in my heart forever (literally ) because he just added more years to my life. My heart was going to give out, I believe. He just breathed more life back into mine by making a way for me to breathe normally. Please please do yourself the best thing on this side of the earth & see this doctor. Don't mess around with doc hopping. Your heart, your family, your friends, & you yourself will be forever grateful. Go on & "move ahead " with the "move a head" surgery (play on his name Movahed! Only oral surgeon Id go to! Flew out from SFBay for double jaw surgery, had trouble sleeping before the surgery, now I can sleep no prob and have full enjoyment of life again! From the first interaction with Dr. Movahed and his staff I knew I was dealing with the best. I chose Dr. Movahed for my corrective jaw surgery and he did a phenomenal job! I traveled to Missouri from Las Vegas, NV and it was 100% worth it! I would recommend him, and only him, to my friends and family. His assistant Iryna, and his office staff went above and beyond with everything and were so supportive throughout the entire process.
