Belvins Patriot Park was donated to the city by Woody and Leah Blevins. Woody was an avid gardener and tended the plot for three decades with care. After Woody turned 101, the upkeep became difficult. The water bill to maintain the landscaping was an expensive $400 a month. After a call to the city to discuss the matter, they offered to take on the maintenance in exchange for being able to create a memorial for the military on the land. Woody Blevins father and brother served in both World Wars so he liked the idea and the city named the park in his honor. Woody passed away at the age of 104 in 2019. He believed it was more important to make the world a better place than turn a profit and this park is a testament to his values. The tranquil Blevins Patriot Park has a small parking area, a veterans memorial with flags and markers, and a few benches. There is still some of Woody's beautiful plants in the park including magnolia and blooming bougainvillea. Thanks to Woody's generous donation, Howey-in-the-Hills is able to hold their Veteran's Day celebrations in the park.

Some great and very well maintained baseball fields, a swimming pool, tennis courts, walking trails picnic tables, bathrooms, drinking fountains and even a dog park. Really something for everyone. One of the very nice things about the park is all the old trees that offer lots of shade from the blistering Floridian sun. A cool park to do a whole lot of cool things.

It looks like it could use a little sprucing up by the city, however. The pool area is run down and often has chairs haphazardly laying around and the bathrooms can be downright gross. There is no shade around the pool except for one flimsy pop-up shelter that was destroyed in a storm and not replaced. The hot tub is nasty looking and has never been open as long as we've been coming. The pool itself often had a lot of debris in it and would use an overhaul as well. With all the growing Mount Dora is doing it would be nice to see them step it up and take care of their parks a little more. This park has a lot of potential but unfortunately it just isn't there yet.

The building its in is in need of a paint job, much of the free weights and machines are outdated, and the cardio room smells a bit moldy. The locker rooms are small and a bit musty. Still, it has a charm and appeal to me that I can't put my finger on. Kind of reminds me of the old-school hardcore gyms I used to train at in my past. I did notice they recently added some new machines to go along with the line of equipment already there. The upstairs room has a load of free weights, benches, racks, and other equipment. Another room on the ground floor features all the leg machines, squat racks, and raquetball courts. Another room has a good amount of cardio machines. Also has a room for classes, and an outdoor play area for the kids and day care. Mixed group of people of all fitness levels seem to work out here, and staff is pleasant. It just all seems to fit like an old glove.

I have been going to the Ranch for many years. It is clean and inviting and all who serve are…read morepolite and professional. Today was different and disappointing. I have had my hair cut there and for pedicures. Today, I went for a fast pedicure and I had Sofia. As she was doing my service, I mentioned to her that my right toe hurt. She told me I had an ingrown toe nail and she had not touch it. Which is strange as she cut the toe nail and took care of the cuticle. I said, "It was not hurting when I arrived." When I was leaving, she my name is Sofia and NEVER book with me. I felt she was rude. As I was checking out, I was asked how my service was and I told them. The manager immediately said let me make this right for you. I told her I would pay for the service but she insisted. I will go back to the Ranch as it clean but I will stay away from Sofia as rudeness in my book is not acceptable.

Its got a Bike track for BMX and a large playground with clean, modern styles. The highlight here for me was the walk down to the sink hole/spring. Its a lovely bit of Florida history. Last year, there was water in the sinkhole. Today it has mostly become a dry pit with a boil at tue back, beneath the rocks. There was a turtle taking advantage of the little pool of water. Truly a nice park to visit

Overall, the park has decent parking and is a nice place to escape the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. If you are in the area, go check out Scott Springs Park. As Ocala continues to grow, it is nice to have places like this to just go chill.
