It took me forever to figure out what MP stood for...Mongolian Plus?...nope. Menlo Park. Duh. My buddy, Nick, took me here as I was visiting him in Menlo Park, and it was on a weekend, so they had a buffet special with lamb options for around $20/person (tax/tip included). You start off grabbing a bowl and topping it with the meats, then the greens/veggies, and you can make your own sauce with vinegar, sugar, garlic, soy sauce, among other things. Hand it over to the grill master, and have him stir fry your masterpiece. There's also hot food options on the side, including egg rolls, fried rice, wontons, regular rice, and soup. Solid Mongolian BBQ place - I appreciated the recommendations for sauce creation, and I appreciate how they were serving water and let us stay for a couple hours just catching up in one of the booths (it was in the afternoon, so not too many people after 2pm...). I wish I was a bit more hungry so I could've eaten more, so come hungry to take advantage of the buffet style! read more

When I lived in NorCal, MP Mongolian BBQ was my most visited restaurant. Any way you cut it, it's a great deal for AYCE. If you don't eat a lot, MBBQ is probably not your thing. Buffet-style, you add meat, vegetables, and sauces to your bowl then pass it off to the grill master. The meats are frozen, but honestly, I'd rather have them be frozen for food safety purposes (never got food poisoning here in 15+ trips). The vegetables are always fresh. It makes for a good combo! There's also some filler food - soft serve, sesame balls, spring rolls, egg drop soup - when you need a break from the MBBQ. I have been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The first time I went it was super empty and not all that busy but when I came in yesterday it was pretty full and busy. They have a hot food aisle where there is sweet and sour chicken or pork (not sure), egg rolls (pretty good), some baked dough with sesame, and fried rice, and fried bread. There is also a yogurt/ice cream machine. For dinner it is $16.99 which isn't that bad of a price for a weekend. The sauces are okay. It's a mix it yourself sauce station so it can be hit or miss depending on what kinda sauce you want. They do have instructions for first timers on how to mix depending on what you want. It's a good deal, and a great addition to Menlo Park! The basic drill is that you fill a small bowl with the meats, tofu, and veggies that you want to put in your stir fry (plus noodles), concoct your own sauce, leave it on the counter, and they'll bring it to you in a few minutes fully cooked! It's really delicious, and if it's not, you only have yourself to blame! (Mostly). I do wish the ingredients were a bit fresher... And we went at 11:30! The shrimp is frozen, so it's kind of chewy when you finally get it. And the sauces can be hard to mix... as well as difficult to estimate the amounts of! Sometimes there is a dinner rush, but even then the time to wait in the Mongolian BBQ line is not that bad. - There is also a side buffet with a small selection. Fun for the family, but not sure if I'll be able to come back as they will no longer be serving shrimp starting November 1st. However, the price will be lowered from 11.99 (adult) to 10.99! Came as a large group with my family this past Sunday in the early evening. The kids loved picking their own ingredients to their dishes. What they loved even more was watching their food be cooked in front of them. Pretty basic selection of food, but their sesame balls were by far a favorite for everyone! Ambiance was a bit too serious and dull for us. However, the waiters were kind enough to come back a number of times to get you full off their free water (drinks are extra). Took my dad to MP Mongolian BBQ for his first make-it-yourself meal and he did pretty well and enjoyed it a lot. The folks at MP Mongolian did great too! They were very friendly and helpful, and our water glasses were filled often, and dishes cleared promptly. The food was fresh and tasty - there were enough choices of protein (beef, chicken, pork, lamb, shrimp, tofu), and plenty of fresh veggies. I loaded up with broccoli, onions, green onion, carrots, and bean sprouts, and they had lots of other items. The sauces were where the line slowed down. There is only one set of sauces, so it takes a while for each person to make their selections, holding up the line. If they added another section of sauces, it would go faster, but there really isn't any space. The food was cooked perfectly - not overcooked and burned like my last Mongolian bbq experience in Oregon last week. I had to add some Sriacha and teriyaki sauce to boost the flavor since whatever I concocted wasn't quite enough flavor. But it's a learning process at these places. This restaurant is clean and well lit, and staff is great. $11.99 for AYCE lunch, and 14.99 for AYCE dinner & all day Saturday. I don't now what the hype is about... Interior is nice and the price is decent. They even include shrimp in their selection! But in my honest opinion, the mongolian BBQ here tastes just as good as the chain stores or the one in malls. Furthermore, the fire alarm went off in the middle of the rush hour for a good 10-15 minutes. The waiters just brushed it off, and didn't try to explain what was happening, if there really was a fire, or when it would turn off. They told us to just stay where we were seated and the alarm was piercing, ear-blasting, headache-inducing and all in all a major appetite killer. There was no "sorry" or "thank you"... they really did not care at all. I would have given this place 4 stars because of the decent price, but knocked off a star for their service and handling of the situation. Being located in the middle of Menlo Park, this restaurant's vibe is a touch above your normal buffet atmosphere. It's dim lighting and dark furnishings everywhere you look, with ample spacing between tables. This place is ideal for groups of varying sizes and doesn't seem to get too busy, but it's still better to make a reservation in advance for parties upwards of 8 people. The lunch service came out to $15.24 after tax and the mandatory gratuity fee on a party over 6, which is decent if you're playing your cards right. the lunch-time set-up is basically the same as dinner with the exception of lamb meat and chicken katsu. Nothing amazing to be found here, but you'll definitely leave satisfied. First time Mongolian BBQ? Head to the end of the curved counter closest to the entrance and take two bowls - you'll need it once you realize how much space raw vegetables, meats, and noodles take up. Proteins available: chicken, beef, pork, and tofu. Lots of vegetables (not all fresh though). Experiment with sauces and release your inner chef (there are suggested broth recipes taped on the glass). Wait for an available chef to cook your custom meal on a huge circular sizzling slab. If you're vegetarian, you can let the chef know and they'll scrape off all the meat and other random shavings left from cooking previous meals. Your food should be ready within minutes, and then you've got even more decisions to make: sauces on the side? Rice? Spring rolls? Soup? Vanilla soft serve?? Most of the cooked items on the side table are kinda stale and end up just taking up more space that you could invest in more Mongolian BBQ, but a spring roll with plum sauce is worth it. Their soft serve tends to come out thin and watery; their dessert bowls only aggravate this since they usually come out warm, so take one and let it cool to room temp before filling it. In general their staff is very good about keeping the premises clean. When we ate there our finished bowls were cleared almost immediately and our water mugs kept inundated. Two bathrooms are located directly across from the entrance in the back, one for male, one for female. I also didn't like how they charge you extra for shrimp and its counted out-- not all you can eat for the shrimp. So its charged per order for a set number of pieces of shrimp. This is our teams restaurant of choice! All you can eat buffet with build it yourself bowls, and hotline with soup, rice, and ice cream as well. I prefer to just have the bowls. Meat selection includes chicken, pork, beef, lamb, tofu, and shrimp (+$2 for shrimp). I recommend the lamb! Use as much liquid sauces as you can so that you get a nice rich flavor... otherwise they might pour water on your food on the stone and that can dampen the flavor. 3. Should get 0 stars. The food is OK, but the place is run by a weasel, or has a weasel managing it on Saturdays. My wife and I stopped in as we were doing some shopping in the strip mall it's in, and I was hungry. She is dealing with some gastric issues right now, and isn't able to eat much there, and wasn't very hungry anyhow. She did have a small bit of rice (I don't usually eat rice, so she had my portion), and a small ice cream. It's all a buffet, and I didn't have any ice cream or rice. The weasel "managing" the place charged us for two full lunches, $40, for one meal. He didn't give us the option to have a small plate sharing charge as some places do. I'd have understood if he charged us $5 for a plate share; all my wife had was small portion of rice, and a smaller portion of their vending machine ice cream. The weasel there charged us $20 for her small portion of rice and ice cream, which was no more of a portion of food than if I'd eaten rice and a bit of ice cream as is included in the lunch buffet. I didn't have ANY rice or ice cream myself. But instead of charging a $5 plate share charge, or even a $10 plate share, the weasel at the front stood firm with his $20 charge for my wife having MY portion of rice and ice cream. He even said he'd call the cops if I raised my voice. Sure, I did query at louder than library volume the necessity of charging for a full plate, but I did not swear at this weasel, nor did I yell. I spoke firmly, and the weasel wanted to call the cops. Needless to say, my wife and I will never go there again. When we lived in Menlo Park a couple of years ago we'd pop in there a few times. You choose your protein, your veggies, which are always fresh, noodles or rice and your seasonings. This is the best Mongolian BBQ. I've been looking for one in the area as good as the one I found LA. After year of searching, I finally have found it in this establishment. They have a solid bar which includes all the standard meats -- chicken, lamb, beef -- and shrimp too on the weekends if you like. They have jalapenos (yay!) and lots of fresh veggies. The food bar is kept meticulously clean.. The range of sauces includes a varied selection of hot and sweet sauces. It has been 6-7 years since I've hit up a Mongolian BBQ restaurant and my fondest memories were of Su's Mongolian in Santa Clara. Wide-eyed and hopeful, I went to MP Mongolian praying it would be like Su's. MP is very close to my office and on days when I feel like stuffing my face, I thought MP would be the place I could indulge myself. Negative, Ghost Rider. This place was a big disappointment. The setup was very reminiscent of Su's with a similar assortment of meats, standard egg noodles, vegetables, and sauces to liven things up. You pack on the noodles, toppings, and sauces in bowls, then leave it at the end of the line for the person to cook it on the circular cast iron wok/grill. The fact that you can tailor your own dish is appealing, yet complicates things as well. You never know what you're gonna get and it may be difficult to duplicate if you do miraculously assemble a winning dish. At MP, the sauces is where you will catch yourself sporting your "WTF" face. You'll see that all the sauces were super watered down. You would think that maybe the oyster sauce or ginger sauce would have somewhat of a thicker viscosity to it, but no, everything was like water! I was conservative at first since I wasn't sure what to expect from the sauces. I followed the suggested recipe taped to the glass for a "First Timer". I measured sparingly - 1/2 scoop of vinegar, 1 scoop of cooking wine, 1 1/2 scoops of soy sauce, etc... End result? My noodles were almost completely devoid of flavor. Thinking I need to kick my sauce game up a notch, I ended up going back to get an additional bowl of sauces thinking if I douse my noodles with it, it could help. Negatory. I ended up with noodles swimming around in a flavorless, watery sauce. I had another idea of getting a bowl of JUST MEAT and drowning it with almost 2 cups of the watered down sauces, having them cook that, and adding it to my noodles. That helped, but my impression of this place overall was already dashed. You shouldn't have to put over 2 cups of sauces in a noodle dish to make it taste mediocre. There's also a "hot food" section where they had fried wontons, fried rice, sesame balls, egg rolls, and egg drop soup. Everything there was BLAND and the sesame balls were hard like rocks. Blech!
