Whenever I post on Yelp, it is always because I really enjoy what I'm reviewing, but not so in this case. And acually, I'd been meaning to write Massage America up for the longest time, but just never got around to it... I visited them as a regular-paying (no Groupon) client (and I also lef a nice tip for my therapist, too) upon the advice of my excellent chiropractor who suggested that some massages could also complement the regular care he was giving me. So I chose Massage America since I knew of the owner Gregory and some of his previous staff from when I was a longstanding member of a luxe health club he was affiliated wihand that he must be very reputable with a respected massage venue. Was I ever wrong -- and my suspicions started to be confirmed upon my walk down a long, dingy kind of Inner Sanctum hall leading to the Masssage America facility in a partially-remodeled ancient office building on Uniont Sq. East, trying to figure out where on the floor it was tucked away in. After finally realizing its location, I entered what looked like a former commercial office suite morphed into a massage studio with cute reception area...but things turned progressively worse again (a la the long dingy hallway, onward). I filled out some forms and unlike others, I was seen on time by a female massage therapist who told me ttoo of her non-holistic medical background - very much against my beliefs...but whatever....I then explained why I was there andthat I was recommended to get this massage by a very reputable chiropracter I was seeing, and as she started doing the massage she kept on commenting how my ankles were swollen from edema (hello, that's one of the reasons I needed the massage!) and that I really should go to an MD for this condition and making me feel as though I was some kind of freak (bad enough that I was in pain to begin with and I should mention that this was a scant year after I had a bad trip-and-fall accident, causing me to break my wrist in two places (the first bones I ever broke in my life) and...a couple months after too, my beloved healh club closed its doors, so I didn't even know where to go to exercise or do a badly-needed sauna...or even to get a massage to help my still-aching body and thinking I'd find some salvation at Massage America. Needless to say, I was so uncomfortable wih the opinions this therapist was spewing out ar me and not too thrilled with the massage or the room/ambience (a little bit wanna-be, I'd say), I couldn't wait to leave. And since there was no bathroom in their facility, I had to walk down the long scary hallway again before I got on the elevator (ew!) to use this creepy oldpublic bathroom that didn't have an entrance door (huhhhh?) and as I was then leaving the bathroom, I didn't see the watch-your-step sign on the wall (since remember? I was so anxious to just get out of there...) that instead of a flat flooring on one level, I didn't realize that it was bi-level and when I stepped down, I fell and almost broke another of my limbs - my ankle! - which, along with my leg, was horribly bruised and subsequently turned black and blue and stayed that way for days). I then fled into the horribly hot humid heatwave early evening and was lucky enough to get a taxi home on this busy street, trembling all over with fear, pain and rage that this kind of disaster capped off this whole horrendous experience and I vowed I would never go there again nor recommend them, natch, to anyone. I think I did eventually report this to the owner - can't remember what his reply was, since I was so upset for weeks about all this - and he may have offered me a discounted massage next time or? which WAS nice of him - and when I told a lawyer I used when I broke my wrist to file a lawsuit for me, about this and that I might want to sue Massage America because of this, it seems that she had heard from other people who had this same faulty bathroom flooring-caused accident there and told me that I'd have to sue the building management instead of Massage America and that it would be a long dragged-out scenario, so I decided to forget about it - since I was just tryingt to heal and get on with my life and didn't need any further grief. But I simply cannot understand all the 5-star (and some 4-star) reviews this place has garnered - which were rather recent - I think from 2013 - 2014 - so maybe with their newer facility on a separate floor in the building, things have changed for the best and hopefully there is either no horrific bathroom in the hall on that floor and perhaps one en suite. But whatever - I would still warn anyone who might be thinking of going here, to think twice - especially since there are so many massage therapists and facilities in the downtown area (like at Equinox, etc.) and fairly well-priced, too, that are so much more professional and also in luxe surroundings, as well. Too bad, since I had such high expectations about them. read more

Alex Lippard is amazing. I've seen him several times now and no matter how I feel going in, I always leave feeling wonderful. He's professional, compassionate and was great at understanding the nuance of what was going on with me and offered great suggestions to maintain the work he did. This place used to be good and has gone downhill. Although there are many wonderful massage therapists, their schedules vary so much that it's almost impossible to book with the good ones. They also encourage you to book online and their website NEVER works properly. You call to schedule and they get annoyed. After going here for 7 years , i am moving on. The past 5 massages, have consisted of 2 therapists not showing up, 1 who adjusted me like a chiropractor without telling me (couldn't move my neck after the massage and received no call back from the owner) and a lousy massage from a new therapist. Don't waste your time or your money. What a shame. All good things must come to an end. read more

I've seen a number of different therapists, and I have to say I am always satisfied with their expertise, ability to translate my issues into not only relief as a result of the deep tissue massage (I suffer from chronic knots all around my body), but also practical approaches I can do to help when I'm home. I took a laser treatment here. The service was good. The results were ok, I was expecting more.

Used a groupon for a deep tissue massage and loved it! The decor was average with the relaxing and sometimes inspiring chanting. The treatment rooms are big and allow plenty of room for changing out of clothes. I had Amanda and she was wonderful! She asked me where my problem areas were and got to hem. I was dizzy afterwards! I've tried reflexology and a mini chiropractor session to no avail. The kinks and crunching on my left shoulder is gone! I can't eat to sleep without the pain! Thanks again Amanda! Another plus, she didn't try to sell me anything, a rare find amongst groupon vendors. read more

I ended up making an appointment with Mpower as a referral from the previous business Massage America. Though the massage itself was very good, I couldn't relax for several reasons: 1. The massage therapist chatted with me throughout the entire massage. Though I appreciate the friendliness, I am not there to make friends and to get to know each other. 2. My room was right next to the reception area and the walls are paper thin. Staff and other clients had loud conversations which I heard very clearly. The ambient music washed out some of the noise but it didn't help that the music kept turning off. Oddly, the therapist complained about this as well during the massage but didn't take any steps to address. 3. During my massage, the therapist mentioned the great deals they offer with their membership packages. At this point, I'm thinking that he is sharing insightful and helpful info to help me. But then after the massage as I'm checking out and quite relaxed, he aggressively pushed this membership package again. I thought the poor timing of upselling their services was very tacky. read more

I've had two massages with Alex and they were awesome - he's extremely knowledgeable about the body, has terrific technique and cares about getting you back into a healthy pain-free state... after the extremely helpful massage, he gave me tips on good exercises for what was going on with me, etc. Highly recommend. - And I had two massages with Jali, which were great, he was also very helpful and knowledgeable, and continually checked in to make sure everything was ok, and one with Sharron, and she was also very nice and gave a great massage with her own unique blend of techniques. I'd highly recommend them all and MPower Bodywork as a place where you can find great massage therapists - and the rooms are nice and the tables can heat up! read more

Massage America is the single best massage institution I've ever been to (and I've been to a lot--and had virtually every type of massage possible from Wasu to Jin Shin). All the massage therapists are excellent and I always walk out feeling so relaxed I don't want to do anything for the rest of the day. I understand every massage therapist has to give the owner a massage before they are allowed to work on "customers". That's a great idea and ensures quality massages. Please note that this is not a spa -- but I've never had a great massage at a spa (I've had very expensive ones by allegedly licensed massage therapists but mediocre at best and this includes some of the high end hotels in NYC) so I'd much rather come here. The prices are reasonable considering the excellent value. If you're looking for luxury over quality of services, then I recommend you seek something else. But if you are looking for a great massage you will not be disappointed. read more

I just had a massage I booked through Lifebooker. I was a little worried because it was a deep tissue massage and because the reviews seemed to be mixed. Here's the deal - the space is pretty industrial with little frills, bathrooms not great, music from the 50s and people talking that you can hear. That being said - the room was clean, the woman I had - Lee - was super nice and the massage was very relaxing. Not too hard as I had feared. I had never heard of Massage America before and bought a Lifebooker deal for a one hour massage for $39. At the time of purchase, I thought this was a great deal and was looking forward to using it for my lower back pain. When I called to book an appointment I could not believe the treatment I received. I realize that I wasn't paying full price- BUT the woman I spoke with refused to schedule an appointment for days, claiming the right practitioner wasn't in. Then, when I finally was able to actually book the massage, they made me give them my complete credit card information to "hold the reservation". Not only did giving my credit card information over the phone make me uncomfortable, but also since I booked the appointment through Lifebooker I had already paid! This place is not some fancy dancy spa, however it is decorated nicely, super clean and always smells good. I will admit that I was first drawn in by the "by one massage get one free" deal they were promoting. After my first massage I was hooked. My massage therapist is highly educated and some how knows where you're hurting and how to make it better. I give it two thumbs way up. read more

Used the deep tissue Groupon and the value for the price is 100% worth it! I'll admit I was a bit sketched out by the location - it's in an office building but feels like you're in someone's apartment. The employees are also all very casually dressed (sweatpants or shorts and a tshirt) so it was a little weird at first. I arrived on Sunday for my appointment but it was cancelled last minute after I had showed up. My therapist didn't show up, but it was due to a family emergency so I wasn't upset and we easily rescheduled for the following day. My new therapist was Anthony and he was great. Lots of strong pressure - it did hurt a bit too much in some areas but he always asked if I was comfortable. I was relaxed and the pressure felt really good and like he worked out all the stress and tight spots! He did use too much oil/grease though - my hair was a mess when I left and it's still really greasy even after showering! I also wish he had taken the time at the end to discuss my problem areas and how to manage them/stretch them out or stuff like that, which other therapists I've been to usually do. Overall, really good, deep massage and I feel 100% better after it - I was super energized the rest of the day! read more

And, when I write the word, "client," what makes Gregory and the therapists at Massage America so special is that they make you feel like family. I have had the best massages of my life at Massage America. This isn't a glitzy high end Midtown or downtown spa with some massage tables. This place low on frills and all about body work and healing. When you walk in the door, there are candles and Buddhas and meditative music. I always leave my sessions feeling grateful. read more

After my massage with Oriel, I slept better than I had in years. The massage melted away 2 years of stress that had built up. I had the 60 minute deep heat massage. The heat was comforting and relaxing. It seemed to loosen my tight muscles which allowed Oriel to really work out the stiffness. Oriel's approach was intuitive and knowledgeable. Only professionals here. Massage America is about true healing. I first started seeing Andrew D for chronic back pain about a year ago and my pain has gone from chronic to almost none. As a matter of fact, I can't remember the last time I had serious back pain. Through deep tissue massage therapy he eased all tension and got rid of muscular knots. I continue to see him monthly for maintenance and stress-relief. Massage America is not a spa, it's massage therapy in a welcoming, clean, and professional environment. I don't normally write reviews, actually I've never written a review before. about anything. but my massage with Aimee Jolson was that amazing! I'm used to getting massages regularly and usually schedule one after any long distance running. My regular masseuse wasn't available after my first half-marathon this past weekend so I decided to roll the dice and give Massage America a try. I'm thankful I did, Aimee was knowledgeable and hit all the sore spots with the right amount of tension and pressure. This is a real massage - I saw Adia for a 75 minute massage before a bike race. She fixed me by working out all the sore muscles and tension and had a ton of great advice for my bike race pre and post ride. I will definitely be going back. MPower is amazing! I had been going there for about a year and they solved my lower back pain. Then I got pregnant and started going to Sarah--she is specifically experienced in prenatal massage and is the sweetest person. She knows how to position me safely and comfortably. I always feel so relaxed and pampered afterward, and I think it is very healthy for the baby. I plan to continue to see her as often as once a week for the rest of my pregnancy! read more

Two locations. The one @ Union Sq. is like an oasis of calm; the other is a pair of treatment rooms @ The Printing House. I agree w/ the other reviewer about their website, but I have never had a problem otherwise. On two occaisions Gregory has treated me for sports related injuries w/ a technique based on deep, sustained pressure. I generally schedule w/ Brandt who does amazing things w/ his elbows, but I have also worked several times w/ Deb who may or may not still be there. Gregory at Massage America is by far the most talented masseuse I have ever had. I have been to a million spas and Massage America is my favorite place in all of Manhattan. They truly care about their clients, know and specialize in every type of massage, the spa is clean and relaxing (they even has ionized water for clients) and price is reasonable. I have had back pain for years and Gregory is so smart, friendly and willing to mix all types of massage to cater to his clients wants/needs. He is so generous, goes above and beyond and I would recommend him to anyone (I am sure others there are great as well I have just always gone to him). Massage Therapist: Oriel Straker. This review is long overdue... I've had 3 massages from Oriel and I must say she is the bomb. I had a car accident a while back and I need to make this a more regular visit but with my crazy schedule it can be very difficult. This last massage I waited abit longer than I should have and I was extremely tight in my shoulder area. I was glad that I booked an hour, for she was able to take her time and work my entire body out, which was alot more off it's mark than just the shoulders. It is something that I now know I have to do more often to avoid the tightness that often occurs. So I will be making this a routine. I highly recommend her to anyone, She is calm and listens when I say stop, which when you are knotted is extremely important. Sleeping that night was better and i felt well rested the next. Ok so, now I have figure how to get back every two weeks instead of every month or so.... CJ. read more
