Do NOT judge a book by the cover. This restaurant is in a part of town most known for it's horrific semi truck traffic (nearby HEB, Pepsi, and several bread company distribution centers) and when you walk in, everything is clean and neat but pretty austere. However, everyone here will treat you like family. But the best part? It's out of the way enough that the SYSCO truck doesn't stop here. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is homemade, and delicious, and it comes out hot and fresh enough (and in generous enough portions) to make your grandma jealous. Amazing food and friendly service! The restaurant has a homey, mom-and-pop feel. From my experience, these kinds of places have great food, and this place did not disappoint. I had the oxtail with collard greens, mac & cheese and corn bread. Hubby opted for the Asian style ribs with cabbage & mac & cheese. Picked the kids chicken strip meal with fries and Texas toast for baby girl. All of us enjoyed everything on our plates. We'd have eaten it all but the servings were generous so we took the remainder of our meals to go. The oxtail was tender and flavorful, and the collard greens were perfectly seasoned and made just right--not at all bitter and simply delicious. The mac & cheese was nice and creamy, and the corn bread was a perfect blend of sweet and buttery. The sweet tea was sweet and brisk like good sweet tea should be. In my opinion this Currently the Best Soul food in San Antonio! I love all the well know southern food establishments, but everything we had here was season, cooked and served perfectly! As soon as we walked in we were greeted with such Down home kindness and the restaurant was nice, cool and very clean. We had the souther egg rolls to start our meal and they might be on my top ten list of favorite foods. I had the fried fish and it was cooked perfectly, hot fresh and perfectly golden brown. My girl friends chicken fried steak was the prefect steak to breading ratio and only needed a fork to cut threw, just perfect. We grabbed some take out from here. It was surprisingly good. The place is a hole in the wall right off Rittiman. But, the people working were extremely nice and next time we hope to dine in. I got the chicken breast smothered with green beans, Mac and cheese and cornbread. The chicken was really flavorful and not dry at all. I enjoyed the green beans and the Mac wasn't bad either. Cornbread was a good balance of sweetness. My husband had the smothered pork chop and cabbage. Both were very good. The cabbage was surprisingly good! My daughter got the chicken and waffles. She liked it, her only complaint was she should have gotten boneless chicken. But that's a personal preference. Overall we are glad we discovered this place and can't wait to go back. Better than A-OK! This place has some amazing down home Southern comfort food. Their menu isn't very long- fish, chicken, sides. But their cuisine is tops! I got the fried chicken- it comes in different varieties, including jalapeno. I don't think I'd ever had jalapeno fried chicken before, outside of a Popeye's. The fried chicken was amazing! The breading seemed to have some sort of green jalapeno paste in it, giving it a delightfully crispy, spicy flavor. The side I got was fried okra. It's hard to do okra right, without turning it into flavorless mush. The crispy light brown breading was perfect, with a sharp okra flavor. We also got the collard greens, which were slightly vinegar tasting, and flavorful. The meals came with a side of cornbread that was crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. They offer a wide selection of hot sauces, with a few that I'd never even heard of before! Hot sauce options are always a plus. The restaurant was clean, and thoughtfully decorated with Bible verses, and a portrait of Mr. A OK looking thoughtfully down on the cash register. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the owner and cook himself came out to check on us and inquire about our meal. It was a great experience! I know I'll be back. This is some serious soul food! We stopped here for some takeout on the way back to Austin from Corpus Christi and my whole family *loved* their food. The folks were very friendly and accommodating, too. The food took a little while to cook (not unexpectedly) and came out piping hot and clearly freshly made. We ate in the car in the parking lot...it was a bit of a mess...a delicious, delicious mess. As others have stated, the exterior of the restaurant isn't very appealing, but the service & food makes up for it. In the past, this location has housed a Cajun restaurant, a Puerto Rican diner, & a Vietnamese restaurant. Not a large space, but a workable size for a family operation. Southern comfort food says it all. I had the meatloaf entree, which came with 2 sides & cornbread. Tasty, large portions. While I was eating, the owner offered a sample of their fried chicken.
