    The Indian curries section
    Mick M.

I have been so far mainly in Chinese (three) and Indian food (1) buffets, but never in a world cuisine one and I was intrigued! A friend of mine, big fun of meat dishes like myself, had already been there and he insisted on giving it a try at some point. So there I was with some friends for the dinner buffet on a Thursday night (last week). We were taken to a table for two, drinks order was taken soon after we looked at the menu, and after a rather short introduction, off we went!!! The cuisines include: Italian (i.e. pizzas), Indian (i.e. curries, naan bread etc.), Japanese (i.e. small selection of rolls/sushi), British (i.e. roast beef, and beef fillet steak cooked on the spot for you - MUST try , deliciously marinated, lamb chops were mentioned in the display but not available at the point), fresh sea food area cooked by a Chinese chef on the spot including baby octopus, mussels, prawns, salmon and cod I think. Additionally a variety of sides including salads, Parmesan cheese with pesto, egg fried rice and others. And of course the desserts buffet: selection of cakes, panacota, brownie, a delicious crème brûlée with coffee flavour (I had three of these!!! Small size, sorry, they were delicious), and also around six ice cream flavours including mint chocolate (recommended), and, the surprise of the night: Bubblegum flavour!!!! Wow, it brought back memories me being in primary school and having one bubblegum after the other to keep my taste buds happy!!! Next time I think I'll try their lunch!! Well done guys!!

I came on a Saturday afternoon with two friends for £10.99 per person. For this price, we were able to eat to our hearts' content from all the noodles, meats, veggies. The food ranges from Chinese dishes to Western fried goods to Japanese sushi. There is even a crepe station where they make chinese savory crepes or chocolate banana crepes right in front of you! It is safe to say that I was very pleased with the selection. The only thing is that there was not much seafood items and the sushi rolls were pretty cheaply made with minimal fillings. Nonetheless, it was still satisfactory due to all the other options available. I was pleasantly surprised by the peking duck wraps as well, which is quite the treat in Chinese culture. There are a few cakes, fruits, and ice cream for dessert although I do think this could be improved. I even saw a waffle bubble wrap station, but no one was there to make them unfortunately. Overall, this is the place for your Asian cravings or when you're feeling really hungry. As someone who grew up eating Asian food all of my life, China Red does a good job with the Chinese food and more. Come here for lunch to really make it worthwhile.

So many buffets are greasy, salty, cheapest meat, bland options. This can turn off even me. Indian restaurant Red Fort isn't like this. The food at Red Fort isn't maybe connoisseur curry but it's still pretty good and not the cheap quality I was expecting. Needless to say this makes their lunch time buffet an even more attractive option. For students this will only cost you £6, otherwise £6.85 or £3.50 for children under ten. One of the strengths of Indian restaurants for me is there usually better than average vegetarian selection. Indeed Red Fort's buffet offers a very good vegetarian selection. The only draw back I can see from Red Fort might be that it can get a bit busy, at least during term time or festival weekends. For some reason it attracts quite large groups. So you might want to avoid these busiest times.

When we got there though, the place was full of Uni sports teams filling themselves up on as much curry and beer as was humanly possibly, and they were making sure that the whole restaurant knew it! The food wasn't bad, although with it being a Saturday night they were quite busy, and so service wasn't the best or the fastest. When the food came, it had obviously been waiting under a heat lamp because my curry had formed a skin on the top of it. That said, I've done my fair share of part-time waitressing jobs so I know how horrible it can be when you have so many big groups in, and when i'd scraped that off the underneath part was gorgeous. The spice level was just right, and unlike lamb dishes in a lot of cheaper curry places the meat wasn't at all chewy or fatty. Everyone tells me I just had a rare one-off bad experience. I'm going to go back and try their lunch buffet and see if that's true. Watch this space...

I decided to have bits of lots - Prawn Crackers, Spring Rolls, Prawn Toast, Pakora, Popadoms, Garlic Bread with a little spoonful of Macaroni Cheese and then Chicken Korma with Nan Bread (of course). Amazing what you can eat when you have lots of little bits of things. Friend had more of a meal with a mixture of indian food and Italian. I left room for pudd because I love the Chocolate Fountain although there are numerous choices of cakes and goodies. Thoroughly enjoyed it as did my friend. Worth a visit and a reasonable price.

The hot holding temp on many dishes was not being maintained and after our last visit, our entire party had bad diarrhea which is a sign of a failing food hygiene system at this location. The food is poor because it all tastes the same - Asian. You want Chinese? You get basmati rice and spices like tumeric which just don't belong in Chinese food. The Chinese curry tastes the same as the Indian section curry. Everything is under seasoned and there was a poor choice out for a Friday evening. The Italian section was equally awful with overcooked pizzas which lacked meat toppings and undercooked crunchy mac n cheese. Indian section had the best choice and most flavour. This was fine but we paid for a world buffet not an Indian one and the dishes we had in common were from the Indian section so I presume this is where we picked up the bacteria which caused our bum gravy. Dessert section has improved. Was happy to see carrot cake back. Overall, the world buffet was mediocre and over priced for the quality of food we had on this visit. I'll stick to the Glasgow locations in future. Shame as the warm, friendly staff in Motherwell outshine the service in every Glasgow location.

It was £11.99 for the buffet as we went mid week. Unfortunately it was the middle of the road for me on their food. Aye they had, Chinese, Indian, supposedly Thai, Italian and surprisingly a taco, so Mexican as well then. So yes it was quiet, which we wanted but this disappointingly meant two bad things. 1. It meant some of the food was dried out, so had been lying for quite a while. My man's taco was brick hard. 2. The staff were constantly coming to our table asking how everything was. I don't mind the once but every 5 minutes by every single member of staff in there. GO AWAY!!! WE'RE FINE! The girl who we were greeted by and explained how it worked was absolutely lovely and very helpful and friendly. She served us our drinks and was the first to check we were ok and then left us to it. There was plenty to choose from but I felt it was more Indian dish focused. This maybe due to the restaurant being run by Indians/Pakistanis?! The girl apologised to us for the other staff harassing us when we went to pay her the bill, she said they can be overwhelming. We also said about our food being quite dried out and she apologised again and said we should have said something because they would have cooked up something else. It was kind of her but we didn't realise we could and when going to a buffet I don't always know what I want and will like. I also wanted my food instantly, hence going to a buffet, so no wait. It was an alright experience, only lifted by the friendly girl staff member (who I would gladly rate 5 stars) but I don't think we'll be hurrying back soon.

The one positive was that my boyfriend fancied satay chicken and we asked for this. The chefs made it up fresh for him and delivered it to our table. It was alright. The second positive was the chocolate fountain. They had marshamallows and other fruit which was nice. Will not be rushing back.
