Cinnamon Roll Large
Joshua D.

Nice and sweet very large extremely filling good taste of cinnamon and icing isn't too crazy. The center part is very sweet which I like. Moist and delicious. They also are very quick with it and very friendly. The place has everything really good cookies also we went with the Mauna Kea cookies chocolate chocolate deliciousness everything is quick and easy and price reasonably the big cinnamon roll was seven dollars a smaller ones 550 and then the cookies I don't know Probably around five bucks but definitely worth it like a little shop you see in Hawaii and everything is perfect! The ambience is a local pop shop that has really good stuff there and support Local come here for sure

Chat siu Manapua

Manapua to die for! Super fresh Hawaiian bread baked with flavorful moist shredded cha siu inside...soooo good. Way better than any baked cha siu bao I've ever had (shredding cha siu is brilliant). 5++++ stars!!! Paniolo cookies were devoured before I could get a pic! Buttery, crispy, chocolatey, oaty deliciousness. 5++ stars!! The jam wall was INSANE!!!! So many unique fruits and combinations. Best part was getting to sample so many of them. Ohelo and jaboticaba? Amazing!!! Took home a jar of passion jaboticaba jam and papaya jam for $12 each. Definitely coming back here every chance we get!

Just north of Hilo and on way to Akaka Falls is Mr Ed's store. Traveled with sister and family with goal of bringing home his famous Lilikoi butter jam. After the store's generous taste testing of dozens of flavors , we brought back each 16 jars. Mr Ed is the nicest guy with a great story to tell you!

Peach pineapple turnover

We stopped here on a whim after Akaka Falls. This place truly has everything--a giant wall of jellies and jams, a pastry counter, shave ice, cold drinks, tchotchkes, you name it. We were also able to say hi to Mr. Ed himself, who was a sweet and welcoming guy. The person manning the register was also nice enough to let me sample as many jams as I wanted. I regret not picking up a jar; There are so many exotic fruit jams that you cannot possibly find on the mainland (jaboticaba, ohelo berries, Suriname cherries, etc.) Regrettably, we left only with a can of diet coke and a pineapple-peach turnover. The turnover was still good a full day after we bought it (it also survived the plane ride to Oahu) and was perfect after being warmed up in the toaster. Whether you're on your way to Akaka or heading back to Hilo, you must stop here.

Shaved ice with 3 flavors

We were craving something cold because it was hot and humid out and came across Mr Ed's bakery. Ed himself was sitting inside with his wife June and we had a wonderful conversation about random topics. We got the shaved ice with three flavors: lilikoi, strawberry, and mango. If you like tart flavors, I recommend the lilikoi because it was more on the tart side but homemade! Come check this place out if you're looking for some jam, shaved ice, or a good chat.

Stopped in for a drink and quick snack after Akaka Falls Park. They also have shave ice and made to order food such as hot dogs and burgers. The bakery was almost out by the time I got there. I grabbed one of the huge cinnamon rolls I heard about. It's a hole in the wall family owned island time small business. Next time I'm grabbing some cookies

Great stop if you're going to Akaka falls. They're known for their guava pastry. There's a bunch of honey and jams for sale in the shop too.

Story about jelly
Craig T.

Mr Ed's Bakery located near Rainbow falls my sister found this place on Yelp . We took a Cruz there and this place also sells cookies . We ordered couple of danish and apple turnover. It was ok the pastry but I really like their jelly. Looks like they have a family recipe for making jelly and it goes way back in generations. When I was looking over the shelves there was a gentleman asking me if I wanted to sample any jelly. I ask him if I can try their Strawberry and Lilikoi. The strawberry was on the tart side but the Lilikoi I really liked so I purchased one. Support local when in the area

The haul...azuki anpan sold out when we went!

Stopped by this place after hiking Akaka falls. The bakery is on the side of the main road in a older building. One side of the bakery holds thier baked goods and the other side has bags of cookies on counters and a huge jam/jelly/butter wall. I briefly glanced at the wall and saw original local fruit flavors like sweet potato, jaboticaba, poha berry and lilikoi. It was late afternoon and most of the turnovers and pan breads were gone but I was able to get mango and blueberry turnovers and coco pan. My daughter picked a cinnamon roll the size of her head. I really enjoyed eating my selections. The turnover crusts was flaky and the fruit filling wasn't overly sweet. The cinnamon roll also wasn't overly sweet, and the bun was soft and light. My dad ate the coco pan and said he really liked it. I really want to come back again and try the other pastries and pick up some jam/jelly/butters.

Nice and friendly staff. Offer me some samples. Great place to stop and get a shaved ice and enjoy eating it outside.

The best. Best. Best. Hole in the wall. Mr. Ed let us try samples of all his jams! The passion he has for the island and serving is outstanding. The breakfast sandwich we had wasn't greasy or fatty at all. It was the best protein a girl could have to explore the island all day. Absolutely recommend. Not to mention the best stories that Mr. Ed had to share. Love you, Mr. Ed!

The outside of Mr. Ed's Bakery

Mr. Ed's is such a neat place! It's in an old building from 1910 that used to house Ishigo's grocery. There was an old bread loaf wrapper on the wall from when they made and sold bread to customers! There was an entire wall of yummy jams, jellies and spreads. The young man that helped us let us sample anything we wanted, they had a really cool, old looking two or three drawer refrigerator where all the samples were kept. The young man said that Mr. Ed makes 182 different jams, jellies and spreads! They also sell cookies, brownies and pies. I got the walnut shortbread, can't to try them!

We came at 10:30am which was the pickup time we asked for and waited about 20 minutes in the phone order line before being called into the store and waited a few more minutes and left with our order around 11. They did give samples in line though, so that was nice. I did wish I knew about the additional daily fresh fruit flavors beforehand though so that I could order those when I called! I didn't see it until I came to pick up. The place is small and only enough room for a few people at a time. The strawberry mochi is amazing! Other flavors are good too, so soft and fresh. I think it's worth going if you like mochi and have the time!

Cardamom coffee cake was moist and full of sweet spicy goodness with chocolate chips sprinkled in. The cinnamon raisin walnut swirl was large, dense and heavy. I opted for the one without sugar icing on top. The sweet cinnamon goo rolled in the middle was so good and made me feel less guilty than when eating a Cinnabon. The guy at the counter told me he wanted to work at the bakery after eating the ginger molasses cookies, so of course I had to try them! They were big, soft but with density and tasted like fall. Not life changing for us, but good for those who appreciate that size. Because they close on Sundays and I was only there for the weekend, I went a little nuts. Also had to try the Lilikoi pie. It was different from those I've had on Kauai. This one had more of the consistency of a keylime pie which they also offer. It was tart abd good. Portions and sizes here are generous. Their style is more rustic and homey. So glad Hilo has another good bakery for me to visit ! Next time I'll go earlier when they're not sold out of their best sellers! (Oops! Forgot to let my camera eat first so photos show half eaten bags.)

Hilo's best kept secret tho I can't keep it a secret any longer!…read more FIrst stumbled upon Baumkuchen Farms 16 months ago when I visited the Big Island from Oahu... scouting where I would like to bring my college reunion group. They were gathering from places like Taiwan , Canada, the continental USA so betcha I wanted to show them only the best! Finding anything outside of downtown Hilo can be a challenge as WIFI gets a little sketch. Baumkuchen Farms is easy to find as they are marked on most Hilo (paper) maps. From the phone calls I made to the first welcome from Danielle who was on site to greet us on our scouting trip we felt welcomed. Danielle met us in the parking lot and guided us to the meeting place of the tour. She gave us a brief overview and showed us the bakery, the bathroom, the gift shop, before escorting us to "the hale" the meeting place under shade. Marcus, proprietor of the Farm with wife Maria, further told us about the rich history of the Baumkuchen estate as well as the products they baked and sold. Loved the tour of the farm where we saw vanilla beans growing in greenhouse, jurassic looking fruit trees and beautiful royal palms. A year later returned with my college friends who were absolutely impressed with the operation. We purchased baumkuchen cake, flavored cooking rock salts, other treats and of course ICE COLD drinks (in fact grabbed a few of these before the tour and after). And we enjoyed the tasty samples. In fact, have since seen these delectable morsels of Baumkuchen at Neiman Marcus in Honolulu at much higher price..! Still, nice to know where I can get more when I run out. Or, will have to take another trip to Hilo and Baumkuchen Farms! Thank you Maria, Marcus, Danielle for your hospitality. Visiting Baumkuchen at the Farm or Hilo Farmers Market is always a highlight on my Hilo trips!

In fact, except Madam Pele does NOT necessarily keep to the same schedule as the bakery, would try to time my Volcano drives to coincide with Friday, Saturday, or Sunday! Hahah. Holy Moly Batman... that one item was worth the drive alone! Since there really wasn't any real estate in our tummies, we split everything 3 ways... over the course of the next few hours. Two weeks later, still thinking about that ube cruffin! Would definitely do a repeat on that as well as the Medeterranean scones while trying other items. And as the nice couple infront of us in line mentioned, will have to return for the sister deli across the parking lot. Heard it was featured in Guy Hagi's food vlog.
