The beer here is actually good, though $9 for a single beer feels a bit excessive. The place definitely lives up to its name as the owner was extremely odd, quiet, and awkward and spent most of the time staring at my boyfriend and I, which made us pretty uncomfortable. Walking in, there was 2, yes two patrons. Locals and I suppose the bartenders buddies. He ignored us for about five minutes, while texting and chatting about his dog to the 2, yes two patrons. We ordered two IPAs. $19 and some change. We were served some nasty turpentine. Never in my beer IPA journey have I had such a worst, nasty, foul tasting beer. I am not sure what the deal is, but this place sucks, their beer sucks and the service sucks. I posted a pic of the supposed IPA, look at the color.... Does that seem like an IPA? This was the second time I visited. The first doesn't count since I ran out of time and didn't sample any of the beers. For some reason, the owner, Hutch, wasn't in a very grumpy mood. His arm was in a sling from a rotator cuff injury, but he was in extremely high spirits. I felt a bit cheated because I expected sarcasm and vitriol and instead here was this super nice guy. He even served up water to a customer, which he doesn't normally do. The beer I tried, Golden ale, was under carbonated. It barely had a head or any bubbles. If it had been carbonated it would have been a pretty good representation of this style. My brother-in-law, Juan, had the pale ale, which he rated as average. There are an assortment of pour sizes, but Hutch will default to the 16 ounce, if you don't specify a size. For ambiance I give five stars. The quotes on the wall are funny, and he has a huge number of photos of smiling women doing splits on top of his bar. He also has a varied assortment of off color posters and decorations around the place. It is a small bar, but you can sit on the patio and people watch. So I give 1 star for non-grumpy attitude, 3 stars for non-carbonated beer, and 5 stars for ambiance. This averages out to 3 total stars. I want to try this place again, maybe he will have the carbonation dialed in. read more

The address is wrong on the brewery. It's across the street from O'Brians next to Maggie's (it shares the same porch as Maggie's) What an amazing little find! At first the bartender was a little cold with us.... I'm assuming he was living up to the "Mr. Grumpy" name. But once he realized we were staying for more than one beer he started chatting with us. We asked for a flight of all the beers.... ironically he only has enough 5oz pours for one person to have s flight at a time! I let my friend have it.... I told her to make sure she doesn't drop and break a glass! He has 6 beers on tap ranging from a blonde to a stout. I really liked his Amber. They don't have any fancy names, just "Pale Ale" "Dark Stout" and so forth. The bar has tons of small signs around it that are fun to read. It definitely has a divey feel to it, so if you're looking for a hipster brewery, this isn't your place. Really sure inside, there's a wood fire burning place to sit around. We stopped at the mercantile in town and got some chips and dip to snack on while drinking our brews. read more

OK, so, neither of the breweries in Ouray are making beer to my tastes. They aren't bad beer, they are just much sweeter and/or maltier than I'm used to. I like crisp, dry, citrusy hop-bombs. These are more: biscuit, malty, toffee, round and balanced. But, that's fine. I just love that a town this small has not one, but TWO breweries. Of the two, the better beer is a toss-up. What makes Mr Grumpypants/Ourayle House so great is the ambiance. It's warm, it's woody, it's kitschy, and it's great. You'll feel like your group is hanging out in your Uncle's quirky basement on the night before Thanksgiving. Mr Grumpypants used to be located off the beaten path, but he's now right on the main drag. Luckily, nothing has changed. In fact, if someone dropped you inside...you'd have a tough time telling you were now on Main Street. They don't serve food here, but you can get the fantastic burgers of Maggie's (next door) delivered in to you. I highly recommend doing this. read more

Ouray itself is such a great town but grumpy pants brewing is a cool spot to grab some great beers! We were there during the peak of COVID (May/June 2020). After a little convincing, Mr. Grumpy Pants bottled us some 16oz beers to go. he was hesitant because he didn't think they'd stay fresh for very long. Well Mr. Grumpy Pants, we kept them cold and they were great and fresh! I kid you not I'm spurred on to write this review because I found one of them in the back of my refrigerator. I popped it open tonight and it was just as fresh as the day I got it! I wouldn't count on this every time, maybe it was the perfect seal and the fact we went down in elevation but I'd definitely stop in for some tasty beers next time you're in Ouray! read more

Authentic still in such a now busy little town here in Colorado. Don't walk past this place wondering what's going on. Get a stern look on your face and go order a beer from the grumpy man himself. But make sure to check his mood on the sign to the left of the bar. Don't worry if you don't have something interesting to talk about.. there is plenty around the bar to busy yourself with. Tons of quotes and tons of pictures. He even looks happy in some of the photos (but who wouldn't when he has girls doing splits on his bar). I remember when this was the Ourayle House and was on a side street, in the old building where people paid utility bills. The owner would pour beer, then swing back and forth in a hammock behind the bar while talking up a storm. Mr. Hutch has moved to new digs, but he's as abrasive as ever. After an amazing burger at adjacent Maggie's, I walked inside this joint to get a much-needed beer. There was only one patron--a middle aged blonde from Dallas. She had Mr. Grumpy Pants' full attention. After about two minutes, he looked up and asked if I wanted a beer. I asked for the IPA. "20 ounce, right?" Upselling never sits well with me, but I was thirsty. He handed me a stein that featured a long crack from top to about the middle. I shrugged and went to the patio. The beer was ok. The glass didn't leak. I chatted up some folks from Texas on the patio and enjoyed myself and the view. Overall, the beer is hit or miss and if you enjoy a surly barkeep, this is the place for you. Went here this past Friday evening. After reading all the yelp reviews I wanted to check this place out for myself. We walked in and the bartender greeted us. She was very friendly. To learn that she was just a bartender and the owner was actually not working because he was pouring at a beer festival. So we did not get the true experience at the brewery. The bartender again was very friendly and attentive. The decor is great. Funny and amusing quotes. The beers were decent. The smoked brown was really good. Will def be back to see the owner. I can honestly say that this is the most unique beer joint I've ever been in, largely because of the demeanor of the owner (who seems to be the only employee in the place). This guy has the personality of a cat, as he appears to be completely indifferent to humans. Still, that's part of the charm of the place. He has a dry sense of humor and if you can avoid asking him the typical tourist questions you might engage him a bit. I think this is the best micro in town. The owner and property are very colorful. This is a great place where great tales and stories can be told into the night... He's got a nice, modest lineup of beers. My personal favorite is the IPA. He must think so, too, as there is a $.50 upcharge for it, but it's well worth the extra 4 bits. read more
