Bespoke chocolate shop - I love it!…read more I first heard of Charbonnel et Walker as my parents LOVE their hot chocolate powder! I remember seeing them being given it every Christmas as I grew up. Well, now I'm grown up, I wanted some nice chocolates to go with the champagne glasses I got my friend for her birthday. I was in luck! The shop in Canary Warf is tiny, but well laid out. As well as the window and wall displays there is a central table display which allows you to walk around it and helps guide customers in the small space. The smell of delicious chocolate hits you as walk in and gets your mouth watering! The displays are sort of colour co-ordinated, with each colour corresponding to a flavour or type of chocolate. I homed in on the pink section in the window - the champagne section! I also noticed that they were selling little heart shaped boxes of chocolates on offer - 3 for £6. I picked up 3 of those: dusted strawberry truffles, mint truffles and caramel truffles. The heart shaped boxes are also available empty to fill with truffles of your choice. I got a pink one and bought 3 champagne truffles to go in it for my friend. The young man serving me was lovely - he first asked if I needed help finding anything, and then offered me a chocolate to taste. It was heavenly, but so rich! When I selected the chocolates for my friend he advised me as to which would fit best into the shape of the box. We had a pleasant chat as my card transaction went through and politely wished me a good day as I left. The chocolates taste amazing - very dark and rich, but if you love chocolate, you'll love these. They are a bit on the pricey side (which is why it's only 4 stars - Hotel Chocolat have comparable chocolate in my view just a little less expensive), the single heart shaped box with 3 truffles was around £4, but the other boxes were definitely a bargain! My wife always compares chocolatiers using their Chocolate Orange Peels (Chocolate Orangettes is what they called them at this place) as a benchmark. This place passed with flying colors. They also offered an intriguing Mango-infused Dark Chocolate with a pipet of Mango compote that you could inject before eating. It was also a highlight. The prices are fair for what this place is and the service is friendly, polite and efficient. If you are meandering up and down Brick Lane, this establishment is worth a stop. If you are a Chocolate fan, then this place is a must-stop. I guess there are people out there who are not chocolate lovers (or at least likers), but that is like not being a fan of oxygen from my perspective. Historically, outlets offered excess inventory and slightly damaged goods that retailers were unable to sell at regular retail stores - it seems Hotel Chocolat never got the memo as their "Outlet price" actually seems to be more than what they'd charge in a regular store. Hotel Chocolat stores are normally pretty good for sampling their latest flavours and although they did have stock on the shelf of certain products they weren't doing this sampling of bite-sized chocolates - despite the traditional marketing being present in this store saying it should be happening. Perhaps this was the continued laziness of the staff who didn't seem too helpful anyway (one staff member on the shop floor?) The store inside was pretty nice, new and modern however so it is a real shame how in many ways this is a wasted opportunity to actually be one of their better branches in terms of the overall design and feel of the store - but in many ways this doesn't match expectations one would have from a Hotel Chocolat or Outlet location. 2*

The shop was quiet, but the service was good which the attendant offering samples from Kingdom Bar chocolate which was chocolate and banana which was great and who Montezuma themselves also stock their bars in-store and online. Not a brand new enterprise as there are other Mr Simms' dotted around the country and not the largest (I have popped in to one in Windsor that was larger) but none-the-less a quality addition to the Greenwich scene. Only small really, you'll enter the shop and the centre of the room is a vacant space for perusing and queueing while the two side walls and behind the counter are lined floor to ceiling with chocolate, fudge, boiled sweets, lollies, marshmallows - really every variety of sweet you can think of and too many differing flavours of each to mention here. I picked up 2 Wham bars (they had 4 flavours in all), a bag of Raspberry and Kiwi boiled sweets and other such delights. I decided against a giant bubblegum flavoured cable and rued that decision later. As great a satisfaction as it is to buy bags of sugary wonderment for taste alone there was also a great feeling of nostalgia as I slowly made my way around gazing at all that was on show, being as wide-eyed as I'd ever been and just imagining how they all tasted. The only disappointment coming from the realisation that I can't take it all with me and I must choose a small selection and be content with that. Which I was, dentists aren't cheap y'know. With disappointment seen off, it was time to make some choices. The whole time I was in there, the soundtrack to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was playing. Mr Simms gets my vote over other similar sweet havens, like Cyber Candy, as they provide a superior quality of sweet and are also cheaper. A lot cheaper. I Love Mr Simms.
