The Lobster Pot - Mussels steamed with basil and chilli, delicious, as a main course or starter

If you live in Nottingham or visit it often, when you think of a seafood restaurant you probably…read morethink of Loch Fyne. You probably shouldn't. Take a wander up Mansfield Road, or probably better still, hop on a bus or jump in a cab, as The Lobster Pot is quite a way up. It is worth going out of your way for though. This small restaurant in my opinion is the best fish / seafood place in the city (not that there are many to choose from), and it is a shame that it isn't closer to the city centre. Still, if it were, then the prices would probably be higher to cover higher overheads on property. I am a big fan of mussels, and this place does them wonderfully. Their menu has a good choice of fish and shellfish dishes and a small selection of meat dishes in case anybody in your party isn't keen on seafood. As far as I know though, there aren't any vegetarian options...at least, there weren't the last time I checked their menu online. Some of the dishes have an oriental bent, such as the thai fishcakes, prawn spring rolls and sesame prawn toast starters, but there are plenty of 'regular' seafood dishes. My personal favourites at this place are the smoked haddock chowder as a starter, a hearty, creamy soup which is quite filling in itself, filled with chunks of smoked fish and potato as it is. I then like to have a main course of mussels, usually the ones steamed in chilli and basil, although the more traditional Moules Marinieres are also great. A side dish of french fries goes wonderfully with them. I also sometimes indulge in a couple of fresh oysters, which can be bought individually. Two of these with a splash of tabasco sauce are enough for me as I find them quite rich, I could never eat a full portion as a main course. Various forms of salmon are well represented on the menu, although I have never sampled them myself. There is usually a specials board on display, giving options that don't appear on the regular menu. The restaurant boasts some very reasonably priced wines, with a bottle of house wine costing just under ten pounds, and plenty of others around 11 and 12 pounds. As this is a small place, I would suggest calling to book, especially at weekends and in the Christmas period. Another point in this place's favour is that during the festive period, they keep their regular menu on, instead of forcing a "special" Christmas menu upon you as many restaurants seem to. With the price of different fish and seafood varying so much, it is hard to give an average cost for a meal here, however I do believe with this place that you get what you pay for, and i've never found myself feeling bad about the money i've put down. Seriously, if you are serious about seafood, forget about Loch Fyne. The Lobster Pot wins, claws down!

TL;DR - Nice food, but a slightly sterile venue…read more We came here for a birthday meal on a windswept and rainy night. Finding the venue is pretty challenging in the dark, as you have to drive down very narrow and bumpy unlit lanes. We had an email from the restaurant beforehand advising us that one of the two roads on the approach were flooded, which was useful advice to know in advance! The building itself is a mixture of old and new - built in the 90s, but from local stone it gives the impression of a barn conversion. The interior is warm and welcoming, but clean and modern. We were greeted at the bar and quickly seated at our table in the dining room. I understand that the huge windows at the end of the room offer amazing views, but as it was dark when we were there we were unable to see this. The menu is what you'd probably describe as British classics. I had black pudding and chorizo to start which was nice, but the black pudding wasn't the tastiest I've ever had. Mark had deep friend prawns and calamari which he enjoyed. For our mains, Mark had a steak and onion pie and I went for the steak pudding. Both were nice, but I couldn't help but feel that the presentation of the pudding was underwhelming. It was just slapped on the plate with a sea of mushy peas and chips. And the chips themselves were fine - nice, but nothing to write home about. Dessert was amazing though - I had sticky date pudding which was out of this world, and Mark had the waffles and ice cream which was enormous! This was a really nice way to round out the meal. Overall we enjoyed the meal, but after having heard people rave about this place I came away a little underwhelmed. The dining room is nice but just feels a little soulless - a big empty space with tables and chairs put in it. It didn't help that the bad weather had put a lot of people off attending - as such the enormous dining room felt pretty empty.

Despite the name, it isn't a seafood restaurant but a restaurant showing off British quality cuisine, nestled in the rolling hills of Ramsbottom, where you keep thinking you're getting lost until you see the occasional sign popping out of the bushes telling you that you're nearly there. As you park up, you see the wonderful surroundings of the place and hear the rush of a nearby strong stream. Very pleasant. You walk into the front doors and the first thing you see is a nice bit of provenance, showing the construction of the restaurant in 1992. I love things like this, it's nice to see people being proud of something they've put their passion into. You then pass by a large whisky bottle shop. Surprising, but a nice touch of class! Greeted at the bar, we give our names as we made a reservation and we are taken through to the next room, which is a real dramatic first impression. You walk though a small arch and into an extremely large room with a gigantic window at the far end, looking out onto the rolling moors. It's definitely a "wow" moment. The room is quite modern and a touch on the stark side, but the view makes up for it. The furniture is large chunky modern wood, and generously seated so everyone has room. We're seated and given our menu along with the day's specials. We order a couple of Diet Pepsi's, and have a nosy at the menu. The drinks take a while to appear, but I'm happy to say that two different members of staff came to update us about the situation (a problem with the pump), and gave us some water in the meantime. Service like this is what makes a potentially poor situation well handled and happily received. We start by ordering the garlic bread, described as oven baked focaccia brushed with garlic butter and served with aged balsamic and duo of pesto. I'll get this part out of the way because this was the only underwhelming part of the experience. When it came out we were quite surprised at how small the garlic bread was considering it was listed as "to share" and was £8.00, and despite being a nice piece of bread, we couldn't actually taste much garlic or seasoning at all, which was a shame. However the pesto and balsamic worked perfectly with it and saved it a little. For our mains, I ordered the beef wellington. I've never had beef wellington in a restaurant before and it seemed the perfect "special" choice. My partner ordered the steak and mushroom pie. Both arrived very pleasantly presented. The quality here was superb. The pie was bursting with flavour, and the pastry was perfect. The chips were also just as crunchy and satisfying as you'd hope! The beef wellington was stunning. I was asked if I wanted it pink or cooked through... it's nice to be asked but if you're ordering beef wellington cooked through you might as well order a burger. The beef was pink and juicy, the mushrooms superbly flavourful, and although the pastry was a touch soft, it was still delicious. The part I actually enjoyed most however was the dauphinois potatoes, which was a brick of beautifully flavoured and seasoned layers. I enjoyed every last mouthful of it, and the dish as a whole was really excellent! We were really impressed by the food, and so just had to order dessert! My partner opted for the sticky date pudding, and I opoted for the Baileys and white chocolate cheesecake, which they kindly allowed me to substitute chocolate ice cream for their cookies and cream ice cream as I'm not a big fan of chocolate ice cream. Both came nicely presented but the cheesecake really did look special! The date pudding was rich and comforting, and the perfect way to round off the meal. The cheesecake was deceptively sized! It looked little but was a big portion, and was superbly creamy and tasty indeed, but the cookies and cream ice cream was actually superb, I really enjoyed it and could easily just have got three scoops of that! The one detail I found odd with the venue was that the ladies toilets were a door just off the main room, but the gents are actually out of the room, through the bar, down a corridor, and by the front door... very odd! More than once we saw blokes going to what they assumed was the gents toilet in the next door along, only to wander into a cloakroom and be quickly chased by a member of staff directing them the right way. The service is friendly and professional, but we did on occasion find it hard to get the attention of some of the staff, despite there being quite a few around, but when we did, they were happy to help and very professional. Will definitely return!

Billed as 'Southport's premier seafood and steak restaurant', it would be easy to miss Forge…read moreBrasserie as it is rather hidden down a tiny side street off Eastbank Street. However, those brave enough to go down the pokey back road its on will find themselves rewarded with a lovely dining experience, complimented by helpful and friendly waiting staff as well as delicious cooking using locally grown ingredients. As I said, Forge advertise themselves primarily as a fish restaurant, so it's no surprise to find their menu dominated by fish and other seafood dishes. I'm not a big fan of seafood generally but I love fish and have found some of the dishes at Forge are both interesting and tasty, such as the halibut steak and the grilled Dover sole, which although expensive is worth the price. Aside from seafood and fish dishes, their meat menu is similarly impressive as it boasts a good variety of options including roast duck as well as a good range of different steaks. The restaurant may not be in the best location in Southport but it's worth putting that to one side and giving Forge a go, particularly if you're a seafood and fish fan.

You'll get lovely traditional Brit food in here as well as a fantastic variety of very fresh seafood. In fact the catches of the day are available to view in an open fridge, and that ambience of openness continues right through to the open kitchen where you can see the dishes being created. The prices are really reasonable, especially if you take advantage of some of the special offers, and the service is lovely. But even though it's something of a concealed weapon be sure to book in advance. The place is nicely bustling even during the day and it's more than popular, so be careful!
