Takes a while to get your food and it seems like the entire Resturant is filled with his family members which leaves little room to sit. I'm all for family restaurants, but kids doing your homework and taking up all the tables does not make it a welcoming place. Mr Wok is a gem! There aren't many Chinese restaurants located in Portland, TN. I believe there are only two here (Mr Wok and China Buffet). We were in the mood for some Americanized Chinese food and so we decided to give this place a try. Upon entering, the first thing we noticed was that the store was extremely clean and didn't smell like grease. Nice. The cashier was very sweet and quick to take our order. As other customers rolled in, she recognized everyone and knew exactly what they wanted. I was able to chit chat with her a bit and found out that Mr Wok opened up about 3 years ago and that they moved here from NY. Seating is available (5 tables and 16 chairs). Silverware, napkins, sauces, straws are within your reach. The food is made fresh to order (took about 15 mins for our food to be ready). We were able to try a few dishes and left more than satisfied each time. This is why I'm a major fan of their food: it's not extremely oily, veggies are crisp/fresh and are not bruised, not salty, generous portions, flavorful, white rice was fresh, they aren't heavy handed with the corn starch, I didn't feel sleepy or find myself in a major food coma after eating here. Their Lunch Specials are awesome. For $5, you get a whole lot of food. The lunch special is available everyday from 10:30 am-3 pm. They also offer Combination Plates all day, which come with an egg roll. If you're in the mood for some Americanized Chinese food, I highly recommend Mr Wok. Note: Mr Wok does NOT deliver. I love to have the chicken noodles, rice and chicken and crab Rangoon. All were delicious and I have taught my husband to eat it now cause he never ate Chinese/Japanese before we met. It's all delicious and fresh and cooked within 15 mins. So, u don't have to wait very long. The staff is nice and the restaurant is clean. This place is my favorite Chinese place in Middle Tennessee!! the first time we went, we ordered from inside because we didn't have a menu. So we sat and watched them cook, and they COOK! Guy was in the back with a wok flipping food up in the air. It is awesome to watch. The family that owns it is extremely nice, but also honest. We just ordered a bunch of food including crab rangoons (you have to get them), and as I picked up the food she said "I over cooked the rangoons, so I gave you a 2nd order for free." I've always loved going to Mr. Wok because I love Chinese cuisine! Their service is always fast and nice. They are reliable and amazingly sweet. The inside doesn't look bad at all but they usually have the seats up since most people buy takeout. I love their crab Rangoon. read more

I went against the majority of reviews and gave the place a shot. I should've listened. Hilariously I walked in and the employees almost looked odd/shocked that I came in. Ordered the dinner portion General Two's chicken and paid nearly $14 dollars without tip. Food was ready and bagged in sub 10min. Brought it home (less than 5min away), opened it up, looked pretty good, and took a bite. It was lukewarm, over cooked, old oil, and just terrible flavor. Rice was also heavily over cooked to the point of mush. The "Mr Wok" in White House is stellar. I cannot recommend this Portland location. read more

Don't confuse this place with the Mr. Wok in White House... This place is nowhere near the quality and the staff is about as rude as they can be when you go in there to order. I could have sworn I'd reviewed Mr. Wok before but I must not have. I grab takeout from here about every other month. It's a standard carry-out Chinese place but the staff is super-friendly, it's very clean, and the food is tasty without being overly greasy. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu and none of it has been bad. Lunch prices are very fair (most under $6-7) and dinner prices aren't far off; if you're like me and have to add on the crab rangoons etc. your bill will add up but it's a lot of food for the price. read more

I ate here the other day and it is average at best. I called in my order and they said it would be 15 minutes. I arrived about fifteen minues later to wait another 15 minutes Not a fan. This is by far the best Chinese food I've had in a long time. Second time here in past six weeks. Not at all what I would have expected from a small town in TN. We like the taste of the food here. It's hot and tasty. Our kids ask for it on a regular basis and they cook it fresh super quick. Stay away from this one!!!! Nasty and loud!!!! I ordered shrimp fried rice, to eat in, and they brought me a carry out container with the cheapest fork on the planet. I asked for a dish and got something that resembled a dish. Restroom is through the kitchen. In the kitchen were five large plastic containers filled with breaded chicken, like sweet and sour, etc, just sitting all over the kitchen, on the floor. Health department would lose their mind in a surprise inspection. Make a long story short? I wound up with some food poisoning. One of the ladies had a baby in her arms, trying to ring up the cash register, and the kid was howling and screaming the entire time I was in there. Bad experience. Food is good, service is polite and quick but it is very expensive for what it is. My party had 2 adults and 2 children; we had 4 combos (they do not have a children's menu and if they did they didn't offer to let us see it) and 4 bottled drinks. The total was $42 and some change.
