My 11 (daughter) and 8 (son) year olds have been going to Ms. Huang's tutoring for about 3 months now. They had previously been in a Chinese preschool and after-school program since they were about 3. We switched because my kids were miserable there. The teachers were really strict and my very sensitive daughter would often be crying or on the verge of tears when I picked them up. Ms. Huang is an awesome teacher. She is very caring and patient, and definitely meets the child where they are at. My daughter started to cry when she messed up on writing (she's a perfectionist) and Ms. Huang backed off and let my daughter approach writing when she gained some confidence and was ready for it. My son has never been a great student, and I'll admit, doesn't like taking Chinese (More school?!? Other kids don't have to go to another school!). One session, my son was being uncooperative and wouldn't participate (he has this problem with regular school, too). Ms. Huang was very patient and spent a long time discussing some alternatives with me and then with my son. She was willing to make his request for earning prizes more quickly, which hopefully will help. I don't think it will change my son's mind about learning Chinese, but I do think it made my son feel valued and respected. We do one on one tutoring and I think this has worked well for my kids so far. My daughter is easily lost in a group setting (even as small as 5), and I can hear her when she does homework and feel like she has progressed well. I felt like my son left the after-school program with barely any language knowledge (because no one held him accountable), but I can tell that he has made a lot of progress since we started tutoring. We don't speak at home, so all the exposure my kids get is through tutoring. read more

Not only is Ms. Huang the best Mandarin teacher my child has ever had, but she is an amazing teacher, period. She always exhibits more dedication, patience, and care towards her students than I can ever expect. My child is not great at focusing on academics; Ms. Huang designs fun activities and always has tricks up her sleeves to motivate him to learn. I am constantly surprised by how much my child acquires in a single lesson, and how much he retains when I randomly check his knowledge during the week. My child has tried a few places before to learn Chinese formally. Ms. Huang's class is the only place I would consider a success in that he picks up Mandarin Chinese in all four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and more important, he has a positive experience. Furthermore, Ms. Huang's passion shows when she constantly keeps herself up with new textbooks, teaching materials, extra-curricular books, as well as academic research on language learning. After finding that so many children hate their Chinese after-school programs, I wanted to find a program where my son would enjoy learning Chinese. I'm happy that we were fortunate to find Ms. Huang's program. After more than a year, my son is still excited about learning new Chinese characters and reading Chinese! He has learned to read and write Chinese characters (we chose traditional) as well as pinyin, and we have started to add basic graded readers. The teacher put together a curriculum based on our goals, and she is wonderful about taking feedback and adapting the class as we go along. After trying so many different Mandarin programs and teaching formats, I am very fortunate to find Ms. Huang, a teacher whom my son enjoys learning from. When I first approached Ms. Huang to inquire her tutoring program, she patiently talked to me to get a thorough understanding of my son's learning style, background and challenges. She tailors her program to best suit each learner's need. My son used to dislike mandarin so much, and never uttered one word of mandarin after all the times he spent at After School Mandarin Program. But Ms. Huang managed to break the ice and has made learning mandarin a success for him. Not only does my son view learning mandarin as fun, enjoyable and positive experience, but he is also able to read characters (in such a short span of two months), and converse back in mandarin when I randomly checked on him what he learnt in class. To my surprise, he does not even mind taking optional homework of writing Chinese characters at home. I believe all the progress that my son has so far is attributed to Ms. Huang's holistic teaching approach. Ms. Huang is an excellent Chinese teacher. She has been helping my CLIP 3rd grader this past year. She is extremely patient with my kiddo 1 on 1. She challenges but isn't the typical harsh one way teacher - "do it my way". This isn't just sit there and repeat repeat repeat and memorize to death. There isn't one way to learn and everyone learns differently. What makes her a _great_ teacher is that she adapts to each student and finds the method that works the best for that student. Our experience was 100% remote but this was still effective. Ms. Huang utilizes all available tools, screen sharing, drawing/pictures, writing tools to be able to convey the subject to the student. Lastly Ms Huang is caring. I can tell that she does truly care about each kid and wants the best for them, not just shove them "through the system" to get a passing grade. My second grader has been in immersion the last two years before we pulled him. However, we really wanted to keep his mandarin going and thank goodness we found Huang lao-shi. Huang lao-shi is a gifted educator who excels at teaching to each child's individual needs and levels. My son, like many kids, absolutely dislikes learning Mandarin given that it is his weaker language. However, under Huang lao-Shi's tutelage, he has continued to grow and expand his ability. She structures her classes with him to inspire and foster his interests, making learning fun. They have written stories together using his vocabulary words, competed together to see who would recognize characters first, and have conversations that pique the interests of seven year old boys. Ms. Huang is simply the best Chinese tutor. Before we even started the class, she spent an hour listening to my expectations, working on a tailored lesson plan for my girls. She then spent another hour to meet with my girls to learn about their temperaments and learning style. My girls are 6 and 10, and had very limited exposure to Chinese and never taken Chinese prior to Ms. Huang's.
