This is one of those hole-in-the-wall hidden gems in the area. My family and I have been coming here for years, and the food is always so good. It's definitely a great spot for authentic Taiwanese food. It is very small inside and usually just 1 person working and the cook. :) Their menu has stayed pretty similar over the years, and they still have their "Economic Meals," which are basically lunch specials and such a great deal. I think they have some of the best popcorn chicken, which is listed as the spicy diced chicken. The spicy diced chicken, string beans, and mapo tofu are a must!! We arrived on a Saturday evening, and the server and chef were both in the kitchen. The server came over and gave us menus before getting our drink orders. She was prompt in a very caring manner without ever seeming rushed. She had lots of suggestions as we asked questions about the menu. At some point, the chef was sitting with us, and she asked him clarifying questions for us. She even went back into the kitchen to find out which vegetables were the freshest (which I appreciated)! We ordered a cup of ginseng and goji berry chicken soup, chicken cream corn soup (with egg), ong choy with garlic, walnut shrimp, crispy tofu, and green scallion pancake. As each dish came out, it felt like different instruments in an orchestra being highlighted as they wove into the tapestry of the music. The ong choy built onto the soup, the crispy tofu onto the ong choy and soup, and so on! Until there was this grand harmony of pulsating flavors and textures! I thoroughly enjoyed each dish! I only wish I had a bigger appetite so I could eat more and faster! The server helped us to pack the leftovers. We spoke about how traditional Chinese and Taiwanese food get lost in the mix of more modern and fusion recipes and restaurants. I did the economy meal here and was pleasantly surprised by the food here. It's sorta tucked away and a bit unnoticed. Very mum n pop smaller restaurant. Food is good and they give good prices. I like that the deal can be eaten in house or carry out. It's plaza style parking so there should be space. They offer drinks too. They were kind and offered basic tea w/ purchase. Tried several dishes like the salt and pepper pork chops, honey walnut shrimp and won run soup. We also love their general Tso chicken and their chicken chowmein made old school style (they use fermented vegetables in it). Came here to have lunch with some friends and I remembered talking to someone about this place and once I got there, I vaguely remember having eaten here a very long time ago or possibly same location different owners. Anyway we decided to go with a L's carte orders as opposed to their lunch specials. We went with the sautéed vegetables, which I asked if it has bean sprouts because I can't eat bean sprouts and fortunately she said no, that it does not have bean sprouts. Next we ordered salt & pepper pork chops which they came out super salty. I said maybe the salt poured out from the container, then we got the shredded pork with dried bean curds snd that came out perfect. We also ordered the beef with Szechuan sauce and I guess it didn't register to the lady that I couldn't have bean sprouts because I didn't ask, but she did not make me aware that it had tons of bean sprouts in the dish. Last we got an order of green onion pancakes which were nice and crispy. When she finally came back to our table I brought it up to her and she just said oh I forgot. Small businesses like this just have no concern for customer service. Not like what I remembered from before. I feel I have many more Chinese places that offer what we ordered and I always have a back up place to go to. read more

This place is tucked in a plaza and is a small cozy place. The food is authentic and homey but is a bit too oily for my taste. It the taste is also catered a bit more for American tastes buds so if you're looking for a Chinese place thats a bit more authentic than panda express or your usual takeout spot, this will be the perfect place. Inside they have around 8 small tables seating up to 4 and one to 6 people. They have a single table in the back for bigger parties so you might want to reserve in advance if you are coming with a lot of people. It seems to be run by a couple and feels like eating at your aunties house. Personally not my preference if going out to eat at a restaurant but a cozy place for home cooking if you live nearby. read more

Sometimes I miss home cooked Chinese meals and I haven't found a lot of options in the area. M's kitchen intrigued me because they have the onion roasted whole fish (idk the official name). I'm glad I finally got to try this place because it was very good & tasted authentic. The price is comparable to most Chinese/taiwanese food places imo especially with inflation and I think it's meant to be eaten family style (get a few entrees and share). Do note that it is a pretty small restaurant so it might be hard to accommodate big parties, but it's very homey. We got the onion sauce whole tilapia fish (good! Very tender and flavorful), salt & pepper fried pork (10/10 - fried very well), eggplant in garlic sauce (lightly spicy) & bean sauce fish filet (lightly spicy as well). Don't let the humble appearance of this place deter you from entering. Once you try the food, you will be back, guaranteed. We shared: 1) Beef with tomato-thought my Hawaiian born MIL would enjoy this. While it is quite different than the Hawaiian Chinese tomato beef, it was really delicious. Tender velveted beef with nice chunks of tomato. 2) Shrimp with scrambled egg-also very good. The sautéed shrimp, bean sprouts, green onion, & an extra minute longer on the eggs created a nice texture contrast. Also added a "cooked" flavor to the scrambled egg. 3) Ong choy with garlic- a restaurant stable done well here. 4) Salt & pepper pork chop- really good. Nice meaty pork chops. Crispy. We didn't end up with mostly bone piece as I've had at another Chinese restaurant up the street( rhymes with Slappy Tee). We actually arrived too late for the lunch special. However, the chef hadn't left for his 1-1/2 hr afternoon break. So we were able to have lunch. The waitress was SOOO nice. Very helpful, friendly & also shared dishes we should try next time. Because we KNOW there will be a next time. On a side note, the old time Chinese chefs who cook truly Chinese dishes are a dying breed. Literally. She shared younger cooks want to come in and change/refresh the menu items. Yes, I get it. However, there are plenty of fusion this, nouveau that. What about really good truly Chinese food places? If you're a fan of Northern Cafe on South Street, M's kitchen is the smaller, cheaper, more authentic, better tasting version. Its a small hole in the wall place with several tables hidden away on a quiet lot. There is something charming sitting in this humble little Mom n' Pop restaurant with a hot pot of tea and a Chinese news station rambling off in the background. The food is PHENOMENAL. So many items on the menu and somehow everything is incredible packed with complex flavor. If you only like hyper americanized Chinese food then this place is not for you. The Orange Peel porkchop is still one of our favorites. You take a bite and get burst of delicious orange flavor then an after punch of chinese spice. Bout as perfect as an Orange Peel dish can get. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) are just like the ones you'd get in Taiwan. Also another favorite dish! The sleeper hit hero that I think everyone misses out on is the HOT SPICY DICED CHICKEN. Its delicious FRIED chicken dusted in hot peppers. Think next level popcorn chicken. Everything is so dang good here I could rave on and on. Their chow mein is one of the best you'll have as well. Authentic Northern style Chinese restaurant in Artesia. It's a small humble hole in the wall. When my wife and I walked in, we saw two ladies packing a large bulk order of boxed meals that occupied a few tables. One of them greeted us immediately with a smile and showed us to our table. They don't periodically check in on you, but it's super easily to flag them down if you need anything and they're very friendly. As for the food, we ordered four dishes: Hot Spicy Diced Chicken: 8/10 My personal favorite of the 4 dishes. It's your typical Northern style popcorn chicken loaded with spices and peppers. It's more of a numbing spice than an intense heat. Good flavor and crispiness. Braised String Beans: 7/10 At first I thought this was too plain. But the saltiness from the chicken really amplified the garlic flavor from the string beans and I was glad this wasn't too salty. My wife said it was perfect for her even without the chicken. Shredded Pork with Bean Curd: N/A We enjoyed the shredded tofu and flavor. Also, we like this dish from a place called Cindy's Kitchen near Hacienda Heights. The shredded pork here was a bit too salty and not tender enough for us. Not sure if they velveted the pork, which is a common Chinese cooking technique to get stir fry meat to be really tender. So we felt mixed about this. Squid with Black Bean Sauce: 3/10 The flavor itself was okay. We normally like black bean sauce dishes like clams or squid. The squid was overcooked and rubbery unfortunately, so we didn't like it. In summary, this is one of the few authentic Chinese places in the area, the servers are friendly, and the food is good if you order the right dishes. I first found M's Kitchen several years ago, pre COVID and I am so glad the restaurant is still around. The food is fantastic and you can tell it was made with love. We came in on a Saturday evening and there were only a few other people there. We were warmly greeted and seated and given some hot tea. We opted for the "economic meal" which let us choose three entrees (family style) and we added on an order of their house special fried rice. For the entrees we had the house special beef and what really set this apart for me from other places was the Thai basil in it that just upped the flavor. For the second entree we opted for the general Tso's chicken which was loaded with flavor and perfectly crispy. My favorite entree? The orange peel pork chops which were perfectly cooked, nice and crispy while the meat was super tender and the orange peel sauce was absolutely delicious and it was hard not to eat the whole plate myself! The house special fried rice was absolutely delicious and complimented everything else nicely and was probably some of the best fried rice I have had. For me this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area and even better is that it is not overpriced. It is a small place and the ambience is very relaxed there are a few tables for smaller groups and one big one for a larger group. Out to get gas and decided to grab a quick bite before the tropical storm hit. I had M's Kitchen bookmarked for a while and decided to finally check it out. The interior is definitely not that big but it is clean enough and service was good. I conversed in Mandarin with the waitress but heard her speaking English to non-Chinese patrons. The menu is huge with even more dishes available on the wall. I really liked how many unique dishes there were that I haven't seen elsewhere. Prices were high normal, and portions fair. We ended up ordering a lamb dish (沙茶羊肉), loofah squash (竹笙絲瓜), and basil eggplant pork intestines (九層塔茄子肥腸). All dishes were tasty, though some pieces of the loofah were undercooked and therefore a bit bitter. Steamed white rice (available for an additional charge) was soft and fluffy. I also added the special ginseng chicken soup for $4.50 per bowl, which was so tasty and my favorite part of the meal. We were also given two iced green teas for free, which was a nice gesture. I came here on July 4th for dinner. Seeing that it was Taiwanese I knew most times it is good. The lady was so nice. I called her over the phone to see her hours and she said, "Come, I will prepare the table for you." I was like wow...haven't heard someone so welcoming over the phone EVER.... I ordered General Tso's chicken, chicken with green beans, green onion pancake, shrimp friend rice. I had enough food for another meal and a little left over. The food had really good portion and it was delicious. There is also a lot of traditional dishes that she has listed on the wall in chinese as well. It's the kind of shrimp you'd want every time you order shrimp. The beef has a lovely velveting with that delicious smoky wok taste. Not a single rubbery or tough meat anywhere. The cook is a chill old man that sits outside at the tables when not in the kitchen. You can really tell he brings decades of expertise to every dish. It comes out so fast, yet perfect every time. This guy knows how to cook. This is a hidden gem. Authentic Chinese food with great flavor at reasonable prices. This place beats Sam Woo. This is my third time here and it warranted a review because I've tried multiple dishes. Fried pork chop with black bean is crispy and tons of flavor and large portions. Fried salt and pepper shrimp was perfect. The orange chicken is the best orange chicken I've ever had. Rice is a bit overcooked- I like basmati or jasmine rice where you can perfectly see the rice grain still in tact. Mopu tofu was a bit salty. Overall good food. Service is relaxed however they get you everything you need. They are nice. Not much of an ambiance. They don't take American Express credit cards FYI. The first two times I came here we didn't do the economic meal and portions were big. Today we did the three dish economic meal and portions were good enough for two people. Rice is an extra $2 charge. Using beef or seafood as a protein for your dish in the Economic menu will cost an extra $1 or $2. read more

Authentic Chinese food with great and friendly waitresses. I was able to see the chef and he is basically a Chinese uncle, so you know it's good! It felt like I was eating at home. I got the salt and pepper pork chop; it was fried well with both meaty and fatty pieces. Flavor was not too salty. This was the best dish. I also got ants on a tree (noodle dish), which is what you would except it will taste like with loads of garlic. Hot and sour soup was on the bland side but the portion was huge. I had the Chinese broccoli and bean curd sheets, which was pretty good also as you would expect from a vegetable dish -- nothing amazing. My kumquat green tea was very good with the right amount of sour; it was a bit too sweet for me but I don't mind because I like adding water to my drinks. We came to this place cause it one of our favorite places to go when you want to have great Taiwanese food. We came on Wednesday before the second wave of lockdowns started to celebrate Thanksgiving and a birthday. We ate outside on the tent. We ordered many dishes like usual cause they are priced very reasonable average price $10/ order. They do have a lot of take out orders so food took a little longer than usual but I'm OK with that as soon as the food came. We ordered about 15 different dishes (couldn't take all the pictures) mostly everything I've tried is homemade delicious!! Food kept on coming one after the other. We also brought out our own Birthday cake and they had no problems with that. The staffs are really nice and always make you feel like an auntie is serving you at her house. Looking for some Chinese food in the Cerritos area, I've always tried places that were closer to the main streets as they were more lively. But by spending so much time in the busy plazas, I completely forgot that there was potential for places in the surrounding areas as well. With this in mind, I came to Yelp to search for some of these restaurants and came across M's Kitchen. Being somewhat tucked away in Artesia, I thought I would give them a try. I came in on a Saturday night around 7:30 PM with my party of five to which we were seated immediately in the back. Looking around, the dining room was pretty small. With olive green walls and pictures, it seemed like a "hole in the wall" atmosphere. The seating was somewhat cramped, but it was fine overall. We began to read the menus and decide on what we would order for the night when the waitress told us that she had a party of eight and wanted us to move tables. We complied, but it was a little sudden since we were already settled in. After moving to the new table, we proceeded to look at the menus again when out of nowhere the waitress took two of the five menus we had left on the table and gave them to the table we just moved from without asking prior. Service was somewhat shifty in the first 10 minutes and my party debated if we should have gotten up and walked out. We decided to stay, but these two experiences were not ideal. If you seat a customer at a table, then you've seated them. Having them move to another place because the restaurant does not have enough adequate tables shouldn't be the burden of the customer. Furthermore, taking menus before patrons have finished ordering shouldn't occur as it is possible that they might want to review the menu again. These incidents being over, I decided to order a Twice Cooked Pork which cost around 12.50 as part of the economic meal special ($12 per dish and $0.50 extra because the dish contains pork). The waitress took our menus and came back with food 10 minutes later. When the Twice Cooked Pork came to the table at first, I was mildly confused as the dish seemed to be dominantly cabbage. But after fishing around the dish, I found the pork to be buried inside. In the dish were the pork, cabbage, wooden ear mushrooms, carrots, and bean curd. Ratio-wise, it was pretty heavily vegetable with pork seeming to be the side item in the dish, which left me wanting more. The size of the plate was also somewhat small, which made me feel like I had to eat slower and consume more rice to fill myself up. The dish with rice lasted 1.5 meals, but that's more than likely because I consumed a good portion rice with it. With these being said, the price to portion ratio was leaning towards the "not worth it" side. Though the portion size was more on the lacking side, the food quality was great! The cabbage was moist enough that the liquid it gave off was lightly savory in a fresh way, which balanced the flavor of the intense pork. The wooden ear mushrooms were also cooked perfectly as they were just chewy enough. The texture was somewhat slimy, which helped differentiate the different items in the items on the side. The carrots weren't much to talk about, just your regular old stir-fried carrots; they were chewy and sweet. The one or two pieces of bean curd that were in the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce to give it flavor, but not so much to the point where it felt like it was drowning in sauce. Since bean curd like this is usually braised in soy sauce for a long time, it's commendable how great it tasted. Last and certainly not the least for the dish, the pork was very tasty. The meat itself was cut into thin slices which made the dish very palatable. Each piece had defined spice that combined with a savory flavor that really filled your mouth with a good taste. The top which had some pieces of the pork belly skin tasted very flavorful and had the most seasoning, while the bottom had little strips of fat that created neutral balance. In all, the food quality was very good. For this particular experience at M's Kitchen, I would give them a 4 out of 5. The service at the beginning was mildly irritating, but the service got better as the experience went on. I understand that the waitress was simply trying to do what was best for the restaurant, so I don't hold that against the server. The quantity was somewhat small, but they made up for in in flavor. If not for the mix up in the beginning, I would have gave 5. If I were on the less hungry side but still looking for a good quality meal, I'd recommend M's Kitchen to Artesia and the surrounding areas. Nice work guys. read more
