This place is amazing and if you live in or near Ben Lomond you should not hesitate to consider…read morethem for your child care needs! As a new mother, deciding on a child care provider for my daughter when it was time to go back to work was one of the most difficult decisions. I could not be happier with our choice of Highland's Park Community Bridges. She receives the highest quality of care and they provide a very nurturing environment filled with unique and age-appropriate educational experiences that I could not provide at home. Most importantly, she is so happy to be there! All of the staff are friendly and professional and I am grateful for all of the support and communication they provide to us as parents. The Site Supervisor, Roxy is so compassionate, professional, and understanding. She really listens to families and children equally well. She is always thinking of new ways to engage the children and help them to thrive. I feel like we are part of a community, and I look forward to watching her grow and develop at this center for years to come, while our family is building connections with other children and local families.

Leaving your kid behind while you are at work can be hard, but knowing that they are safe, learning, and most of all having fun makes it less stressful.

We have no money, no income, and no insurance, so we knew finding dental care for her would be difficult. We had heard about MCR from her mother who had gone once many years prior, and we figured it was worth a try. (This was the third clinic/reference center we had visited.) We had no trouble finding the place, and I tend to miss things the first time! It has a big pretty green heart on the outside! We met the receptionist who was polite and helpful, and had us fill out the very short and easy to understand paperwork, where she put us in the queue and offered us the hospitality of the center, food, drink, and couches. :) This place operates by assigning you to an advocate, who informs you of the best options you have in the area for your income, and refers you to places that could help you further. We waited no more than 10 minutes after that when we were seen by an advocate. She was immediately helpful, and didn't beat around the bush presenting things we were not qualified for. She took us seriously, and presented us with the very few options for getting the work done for free. She explained everything plainly and made sure we understood how to proceed. It was a very pleasant experience. We proceeded to follow the steps that were presented and were lucky enough to be approved for getting at least one of the teeth done for free. Since there are only two teeth in need, and one is much worse, this alone will change her daily life. Thank you MCR.

Now I'm going to start this off with a moment of obvious... when reviewing organizations, how you…read moreare involved is the corner stone of your opinion. Let's keep that in mind, shall we? From a participants perspective, Shared Adventures is pretty spectacular (see Lauren B's fabulous review above). This is one of the few organizations in the area whose primary mandate is to provide "adventure" activities for adults with disabilities. The reality is that while there are probably not enough, there are infinitely more charitable organizations out there who provide services for children with disabilities rather than adults. Let's face it, kids are like human puppies, and who doesn't want to shower a puppy with tons of cool stuff? Shared Adventures is unique in that it fills a huge void for those "kids" when they mature into slightly less cute but still adorable adults. This is not to say that children are not welcome at Shared Adventure events... simply that you will find many adults mixed into the crowd as well. Shared Adventures puts on an assortment of events including kayaking, sail boating, horseback riding, rock climbing, gardening, art classes and frequent "dance parties" for folks to come out and socialize. This is especially important for adults who otherwise might be limited in the scope and scale of personable interaction. From a volunteer perspective, Shared Adventures lacks some of the refinement and organizational management of the other organizations I volunteer with here in Santa Cruz. Patience is pretty much key to success as a volunteer. The level of volunteer expertise is often not the highest, but all the volunteers I've ever worked with have huge hearts of gold and will work their tails off to reach the goal. My last criticism stems from what is often lacking in volunteer appreciation. Shared Adventure has a pretty high turn around when it comes to volunteers, and I suspect a lot of this has to do with the lack of support and appreciation shown to the incredible group of people who volunteer their time to make these events possible. With 5 stars for the participants experience, and 3 stars from the volunteer experience, Shared Adventures cranks out a solid 4 stars.

I went on my first "adventure" today and it was nothing less than incredible. Well organized, super cool people, volunteers to help out and awesome events that aren't lame...we went KAYAKING! I roll around life in a wheelchair, never woulda thought I could kayak (but then why not??!!), but Shared Adventures has no limit if you don't limit yourself... they host a variety of events, some free ones, all reasonably priced, they do fill up fast but don't complain as it fills based on volunteers they NEED to support the events (come help volunteer, and you can join the fun!) I'm going indoor rock climbing with them soon, they have had sailing, beach days... year-round sports and gatherings My first event, totally coming back for more! Kayaking is also my new fav love :)
