I've heard the cheesy radio ads and just clumped them in with the likes of the Mad Butcher. I was assigned sausage duty for a social club event at work and on recommendation I decided to inquire with the Mt Roskill location. The manager, (I think his name was Paul), was super helpful and gave us a great discount due to the quantity ordered. They had an extensive range of flavours which were all offered at the the same price and gluten free. We ended up going with 100% beef and the Garlic & Smoked Paprika options. The manager advised that they made sausages every Monday and Thursday and since the event was on Friday, we were getting them fresh as! When I went to pick them up all the staff were so incredibly friendly and the manager was so insistent that I soak the sausages in hot water for 10 minutes before grilling them that he gave me a bucket to do so free of charge. I was really surprised at the wide selection of quality yet reasonably priced meat and specialty cuts. At the social club event, the sausages were such a hit and inspired many people to talk about their deliciousness. The Aussie Butcher isn't super boutique but also isn't a cheap meat lot. You can tell they care about the product and are keen on providing reasonable prices. Totally a fan!

Known to locals as the Wairiki Butchery (it's on the corner of Mt Eden and Wairiki Roads), I feel lucky to have this place close by. While whole carcasses really do freak me out, I'm a typical hypocritical consumer and meat in its prepared and packaged form does excite the cook in me. I go here often for the Chicken Nibbles, Lean Beef Mince, a log of Eye Fillet for a special occasion and also some really interesting sausages - the Wild Thar are always a hit at my BBQs. There is something about shopping at your local butchery that makes me feel like a small girl with my nana and I think it's so important to support specialty businesses like this. The guys are always so lovely; really helpful and I don't feel stupid asking them for advice on temperatures and timing. A lot of the basics I buy are priced comparatively to supermarkets so if you have the time, it's well worth dropping in here to get your meat. They also have some flash stuff in the fridge (marinades and the like) so it's one stop shopping if you have a dinner panic.

This butcher is in a great location if you want to buy your groceries and meat separately. It's right next to the Grey Lynn Countdown and means you can pretty much do both in one hit. The meat is really good too, they've won loads of awards for it. In this case, you can definitely judge a book by its cover as the meat is really good. And they often have a good special going on. Inside there is a massive selection of meats and smallgoods, sauces and other pantry items on offer. The meat is sold by weight from an impressive looking and well stocked cabinet and they also sell a range of pre packaged well known quality meat brands like Harmony. Their sausages are first class and so is their bacon which is available in thick cuts. Be prepared to pay in the high side for some cuts but be assured you'll be buying quality.

I was pretty impressed with their efforts to source meats from farms they had relationships with, little posters around the shop telling you about the people responsible for raising your food :) Equally impressed with their curated selection of hot sauces from around the world - I need to send them a shipment of Dave's Gourmet sauce, that sh*t will destroy even the meanest of lads. All things considered, a lil' on the pricey side, but you definitely get what you pay for here.
