Yes the rumours are true. If you were at the opening of The Market Shed last Sunday you too…read moreprobably would have seen me walking around like a pug in a bacon shop. Wide eyed, unable to breath properly from heart palpitations because "can't talk...too excited..." This place has gathered everything I love about Adelaide and plonked it into the trendiest warehouse shed thing at the back of IGA on Gilbert St. It's even run by the same SA family! Every Sunday from 9am-2pm this shed will open its doors to stallholders who want to sell their wares. From bakers to vegan cafes, coffee shops, seedling stalls and more this little collective of organic, vegan, raw and healthy food is all a bit too much for me. Want to try some kombucha? Hells yeah! How about a freshly steamed mussel from the coast of SA? Ok! It's like a farmers market but smaller, less crowded (not for long I'm sure) and is 5 minutes from my home so wins 5 stars in my books. So why only 4 stars then? I do think there needs to be more fresh fruit and veg options and a bit more diversity in stalls for people like me who want to do their week's shop here (ie. 3 bakeries in the one small location is a bit much). I am officially signed up as a Market Member already and for $20 per annum you get invited to private events at The Shed, receive discounts at stalls and a cool chopping board for progressive tasting plate specials from stalls each weekend. So if you have nothing to do next Sunday and want to see a spectacle, come on down to the Market Shed to see your resident pug faced, over excited local shopping, slurping coffee and getting her organic on.

There in only it's third market I found a variety of stalls & very enthusiastic producers - all of whom were willing to spend the time with every customer. A face-painter (only $3!) and musos at each corner of the space added to the enthusiastic vibe - tangible despite a couple of summer showers that may have kept larger hoardes of customers away. Despite it's small(er) size (of comparative markets such as the Adelaide Farmers Showgrounds Market) of 20-30 stalls, the array of stalls and the promises of more to come (think weekend evening members activities) have got my vote. Visit during 2013 to become a member for an amazing introductory price of $20 & support Adelaide's newest market with an organic, artisan & community focus!

The oldest (?) vineyard in Adelaide hills, with an excellent range of single vineyards wines from its Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Coonawarra vineyards. Excellent ratings in the Halliday bible! For those interested, try the Chardonnay that is grown on some of the oldest rocks in the world! They wine is lovely, and you can admire a piece of the rock as you sample it!

I suppose McLaren Vale and the Barossa seem close enoough, but the Adelaide Hills features many cellar doors to rival these other nearby regions. Barratts is family run, so please be aware that they're only open on Saturday and Sunday! They do indeed have two adorable pugs and each time I have been we have enjoyed regional platters while we did our tasting at the two large outdoor tables. There are aisles of wholemeal organic pasta, flours, nuts, and organic coffee and teas etc. On the other side of the shop is a large range of health and beauty products, including organic and free-of-everything hair-care, moisturisers, make-up and more. At the front of the shop is a small cafe connected to the register. What initially caught me was the sign for $6 organic coffee and vegan muffin. I'm not vegan, but I try to eat it when I'm able, so I bee-lined for the counter. I got myself a latte and a berry muffin, and some free reading material. For an organic coffee, I was impressed. Having just read about the sins of sugar, I had my coffee without my usual one teaspoon, which could have been a mistake since I often need to sugar to take the edge of the bitterness. This however was fine without, and not bitter at all, though maintaining its flavour. It wasn't quite like normal coffee, but I couldn't pin-point why that was. Still, I was happy with it. Vegan sweets are mostly really moist, and this was no exception. I couldn't tell it was vegan apart from its density, and I love a dense muffin, so no complaints here.

Organic can be pricey as I'm sure you're well aware (I sure as hell am being a uni student) but they do some ok deals on select items. We always browse their discounted items section and scab a few bargains. We shop around quite a bit for organic items and I must say they do alright on price, range and quality. If more big retailers can push organic hopefully it will become more affordable, without compromising the ethics ("free-range" eggs are an example of how standards can be watered down for corporate greed). In the meantime Romeo's Organic Wholefoods is on my list of places to source stuff from. Highly recommend for those that are like-minded!

Unless you have a good knowledge of local suppliers, seasonal eating and food sovereignty, trying to eat ethically and affordably can be baffling. I'm no expert - which explains why I was buying zuchinnis at seven dollars a kilo instead of waiting a month for them to go down to three dollars a kilo. Most of the veges here are sourced directly from local suppliers and everything is labelled with information about where it comes from, whether it is organic, sprayed with any chemicals, all that stuff. If you ask, you can find out what has just come in, what is in season and really cheap, all that kind of stuff - the staff play a big role in the running of the business so they know all this firsthand. They are very, very friendly and passionate about eating good food. The big focus here is fresh fruit and vege, but they also stock meats, pasta, vegetarian products, canned goods, bread, cereal and even some body products. There is also a little cafe in the centre of the store, and a lovely seating area next to the window, with all the sunlight and breeze coming in. I tend to pick and choose what I like to buy from here - I can't afford to shop only organic, which is why talking to the staff about what is in season helps so much. There are a few special things I can't resist though. The Mylor Bakery bread is the most expensive bread I've ever bought - between eight and eleven dollars a loaf - but it is also the greatest and best bread I've ever eaten. I would recommend the fruit loaf (loaded with heaps of figs, apricots, really moist and spicy) and the olive and pumpkin loaf (so good that eating it with anything else on it is a travesty).

But it has adopted a more organised and structured market layout now which makes it a lot easier to navigate. Fruit, veg and produce still remain quite expensive for their organic label but I'm a sucker for that stuff. This is the perfect place to drop in for a green Shrek smoothie or protein ball, vegan chocolate brownie or spinach pastie when you're trying to be healthy after attending a pilates class down the road. Just don't be in a rush as they do run on peace and love time here. Staff are incredibly friendly and laid back. Variety of food is great for the size of the shop and I kind of hope they stay here over their Gouger St premises! One hot tip: Check out their Facebook page for secret specials every week. ie. I googled this place in anticipation of writing the first review, because I'd never heard of…read moreit last year and it is slightly off the beaten track, but lo and behold, it wasn't even registered as a business on Yelp! So here it is! I also wanted to review this place in anticipation of the upcoming Winter Reds Festival that takes place annually in the winter all around the Adelaide Hills. If you can get along to VPW, I highly recommend it. The cellar door is a family-run operation and everyone who works here is charming and friendly. The place itself is also charming and cosy, and you could be forgiven for wanting to stay overnight after you've enjoyed their wine range! (although being serious, I think you'll have to look down the road for accomodation) They seem to enjoy doing french-themed light meals (last year's Winter Reds they did a coq au vin (that's chicken in wine for all you non-Frenchies!) and they also did a French themed food spread at Crush 2015 this year but I was busy out at Longview so I missed it!) and the wines are interesting and tasty. As they say, their wines are 'premium, elegant, cool climates Adelaide Hills wines'. They are definitely, as they have also self-described, a 'chic boutique'! In that the wines are all small batch production, and the Cellar Door is only open on the 4th weekend of every month (and not open every month either!) but if they are open for the Winter Reds Festival, I highly recommend getting in for some good ol' fashioned home cooked winter treats and cracking vino!
