Small everything, more like chisai-jiri! Looking for nigiri, and the yelp community recommended Mujiri. The shop itself is tiny, and on any dinner day expect to wait. They can only probably seat like 20 people inside, or you can order for pick up like many others. They have a sushi bar with a few bar seats, but the tables are scant and there's only indoor seating. Street parking is also lucky, if you happen to get a spot right in front of the storefront...but looks like you have to pay if you're around the corner. If you're in the area and can walk it, it might be easier to do that. I got the nigiri combo for pickup, and it was a cute little wooden box that i could hold firmly in one hand. They package everything so cute (very Japanese style) and compact. The nigiri combo box comes with 6 maki's with the fish of the day, and I lucked out with salmon that day. The 7 pieces of nigiri were ALL different, I wish there was a cute little label so I knew exactly what fish I was eating, but they had the different toro's, salmon, yellowtail, and some other deliciously tender and buttery fishes that I couldn't tell you what was what. I think if you've had nigiri or sashimi combo boxes in SF or in South Bay, Oakland's Mujiri kind of pales in comparison. Portions are much smaller than I was used to compared to what I've had in San Mateo or South Bay, and the cuts of sashimi here are on the thinner side. That's not to say that service was less than A++ and that their online ordering system was super easy to navigate. They ran out some of the more popular dish like toro. The nigiri was very dissappointing. The rice wasn't nicely packed, most of them fell apart when i picked them up. It was my mom's birthday so we tried the yuzu cheesecake which was light and flavorful. I also liked how it was plated. The server was really nice, gave speedy service and made sure we felt cared for. Even though the space is a bit small, the ambience is cozy and intimate even when it's packed. You will, however, definitely overhear conversations haha which could be it's own entertainment sometimes. We ordered 2 Nigiri Combos, 1 Sashimi Combo, the Spicy Tuna Maki and Salmon & Shiso Hosomaki (salmon with mint leaf roll). I really wanted to give Mujiri 5 stars but the experience wasn't perfect, so 4.5 for me! Came on a Monday around 12:45pm. Got on the waitlist about 15 minutes before. It was pretty much a full house (not much seating) and our table was ready according to Yelp but we still had to wait a few minutes to be seated. They seemed understaffed. Ordering is via QR code. We were able to order with our sushi chef and each got the 7 piece nigiri with a maki roll which was $25 a set. Added a spicy salmon roll on top. While we were waiting for our order the waitress came by to take our order and didn't realize we already ordered. We eventually got our order with yellowtail, salmon, ocean trout, arctic char, scallop, black snapper, and toro. Fishes were good sizes and not too much rice which was good. Very fresh! The rice seemed to be marinated with a little bit of soy sauce so you don't need to dip your sushi much. I did find the rice a little too mushy/soft, which it was a bit firmer! Amazing prices for some decent quality sushi. I came here for lunch with my friend last week and ordered the nigiri combo for $25 (what a steal!). It comes with 7 pieces of nigiri (you can pick from a list, do chef's choice, or both) and a roll (6 pieces). I opted for the Hotate (scallop), Ika (squid), and Toro, among others. Of note, if you decide to pick from the list, you cannot repeat choices (i.e., can't get two of anything). My only gripe was that the toro was not what I expected (not nearly as fatty/creamy as what you typically get), but besides that everything was great. Also, hard to complain when the entire combo meal was only $25! We also tried toro (?) rolls (see photo) which were great. My only complaint is that the seaweed was already quite soggy by the time we got the dish. Otherwise, the fish was very creamy and the flavors were great. Service is friendly and efficient. Interior is small but clean. TL;DR: Not the best sushi i've ever had by any means, but you can't find sushi at this price point that is of similar quality in the Bay Area. This is the one sushi place I go out of my way to advertise to the world, always saying omakase level but not omakase price. Came here on a Tuesday evening and had to wait 10-15 minutes to be seated. The restaurant is pretty small and doesn't have a lot of seating but it's a very cozy vibe. Started with one of their specials - negi toro handroll, which was melt in your mouth delicious! Then we eat got a nigiri combo, which comes with 7 pieces of nigiri and a small six piece maki roll. Absolutely delicious. I ordered this every time I come to Mujiri. I first tried this restaurant in Hayward by the East Bay campus but this is hands-down my favorite Japanese restaurant in Oakland. I brought my grandmother this time and she enjoyed the food as well. It was just a really long wait time over an hour and 30 minutes almost 2 hours. It was Valentine's Day weekend though and also All-Star weekend so that could've impacted that. I think it's best if you make reservations ahead of time, but they also have an option where you can put your name on the waitlist if you go in person. I've gone here to this location in Oakland at least three times though and every time the food is good! Such an amazing sushi spot just wish they also carried miso soup. You can't find fresher fish in the East Bay. Prices are inexpensive for such quality fish, but I must say, not the largest quantities. While the nigiri plate is $25, if you're hungry you'll need more. The sashimi plate is $35, and same sentiments. But, let's go back to the fish, just unbelievable. They have a nice selection of the usual favorites, but also some seasonal options. To note: they only offer fish here, no other menu items. Scratch that... they do offer cheesecake and the yuzu cheesecake was a small slice of heaven. The place itself is a hole-in-the-wall. A sushi bar with about 3 tables. Not fancy at all. The have a nice array of sake and asahi on draft. Service was fine. Sashimi plate, nigiri plate and a few extras we agreed that the toro maki was our favorite. If available, order that. The charred seasonal fish was unbelievable. One was included in the nigiri plate, but we added the other one to the order. While I'd say I wish they did give slightly more fish, the quality is exceptional and the price point makes it approachable for most to enjoy such quality fare. During the pandemic, we ordered religiously from Mujiri. It was our favorite go to for sushi. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience last weekend when we dined in for the first time. We made a reservation for our celebration date and was barely greeted by the staff. They sat us at the counter and the table was incredibly sticky. A fly was on my plate and when I showed it to one of the waitresses, she said "oh no!" and didn't even take my plate away. Now for the sushi itself, we opted for our usual Nigiri combo and two mini hand rolls. Sad to say that half (if not more) of the fish in our nigiri combos tasted old. The salmon maki was super dry and didn't taste right. These were NOT the fresh fish we had whenever we ordered take out. I've been meaning to try out Mujiri for years now and finally had a chance to stop by this evening. Making a reservation at Mujiri is not particularly difficult: my wife and I were able to find one for 6:00 p.m. just the day before. Though our reservation was at 6:00 p.m., it was closer to 6:30 p.m. before we actually got seated. If you're hoping to do a walk-in, you will very likely have to wait a few hours: Mujuri gets super busy during the dinner rush hours. Between the two of us, we ordered two nigiri combos, one sashimi combo, an add-on two-piece of the negi toro handroll, and the matcha cheesecake. This ended up being the perfect amount of food. Instead of having the chef choose our fish for the nigiri combos, we opted to make our own set. The highlight of my meal was definitely the tamagoyaki, the toro, and the Hokkaido scallop. These three bites were as good as bites I've had at Michelin starred omakase locations in San Francisco. For $25 for the chef's nigiri selection, this is a hard price-point to beat in the Bay Area, especially for the quality. The only item where I could see an improvement is the negi toro handroll: like many other Yelpers who have ordered this dish, the seaweed to mine was also quite soggy by the time it got to my table. I saw the dish getting made at the sushi bar, and it was honestly no more than 2-minutes before it got brought to my table. I suppose that's the unforgiving timeframe you have to work with when dealing with hand-rolls. The dish was still tasty, but don't expect to get crispy nori. The drinks menu is a bit lacking, especially when it comes to cocktails: there were only two available on the menu and the one that we ordered -- the Yuzu refresher, was too watered down tasting for my liking. We were debating on whether or not to order the matcha cheesecake at the end of our meal, afraid we might have been too full to enjoy it, but it was just the right amount to tie up our meal: the piece is about 1/3 the size of an iPhone 13 so you can easily finish a slice yourself. The cheesecake is not over-the-top sweet, but you can definitely taste the richness. I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Mujiri. You can tell the staff works extremely hard to make sure they get out all the orders as fast as possible. I would not hesitate to stop by again. If you've tried Sugarfish before down in LA, Mujiri is at least 10x better. Casual vibes, but the product is vastly superior. read more

We loved Mujiri so much that we dined here twice in one week! While it's not the cheapest meal, it's absolutely worth every penny. The service is friendly and the fish is tasty! Though they don't offer chirashi on the menu (my usual go-to), the sashimi combo with a side of perfectly seasoned rice is a fantastic alternative. I'm moving soon but I'm so sad I'm not going to have Mujiri near me anymore. I love coming here and sitting in front of the sushi chefs. The fish quality is excellent and the service is excellent. I have enjoyed everything I've ordered here. Appetizers I typically get the toro handroll and sometimes I get the salad. Entree I always get the nigiri combo (chef's choice), and I always get a side of the ikura nigiri. Sometimes I get the uni nigiri as well. I have also gotten the small rolls like the sake and shiso roll. Dessert I've tried the cheesecake and it's very light, not too sweet. The seasonal dessert is quite good- I recently had the Sakura mochi and it so tasty with a shiso leaf. The interior is very small but it's cozy.
